What are the chances of that . Second year in a row we have played North Shore away and prior to that we play Birkenhead away two years in a row but it's a random draw .... yeah right

Did I hear right that a goal keeper was send off over a backpass?

Anyone got a wrap up of Wellington United vs. Wests? Sounds like a great game with the result only secured late.

Did Wests put out quite a few of their own kids? I see Owen Parker-Price scored - he must be only 16 and generally plays Reserves no?

It was quite an even game in the first half but Wests were up 2-0 at half time. Didn't see the second half but Wellington United must have played well. Wests definitely seemed to not have their top team out on the field.

Sounds like if he was denying a clear goal scoring opportunity its a fair enough red I think.

Went to 2 Chatham Cup games over the weekend - both would be minor upsets but both well deserved wins for "underdogs".

Saturday Central 3 Glenfield 0 - pretty ordinary conditions at Kiwitea. Central took chances well , Glenfield didn't. Central team of no names apart from Berlanga and Spoonley. Perhaps Glenfield should have spent some of their budget on defenders .

Sunday North Shore 1 Wanderers 0. North Shore well worth the win. Wanderers pretty toothless , although Jones looked injured. No Cossey on touchline (suspended ?) Bizarre send off of Wanderers goal keeper with about 10 mins to go . Wanderers CB lingered on the ball and played a passback to GK from about 2 yards away that GK had no choice but to catch. Indirect FK given plus red card which had croud shaking their heads in bewilderment and Wanderers bench in apoplexy.

Good to see a traditional club like NSU into next round.

I don't think picking up a back pass can be considered denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Back pass is an indirect free kick

My sauce saw the game differently. Wests totally owned the first half. Second half became scrappy but pace up front for Wellington Academy Football United School of Excellence was telling. Owen PP was one of a number of Ole youngsters to get game time.

The WAFUSE CBs Rickied long all day long. #aligned

What if under hit back pass and keeper blatantly picks up to avoid opposing player to nick it and score?
Denying clear goal scoring opportunity?

I thought the person had to be fouled for that to be red. In that case, he has not been fouled, its just a back pass.

Do all backpasses (as the keeper is normally the last line of defence) now become red card offences? I don't think so.

From where I was sitting it wasn't an under hit back pass - it went directly to the GK and what he should have done was hacked it away under pressure . I didn't see it as a goalscoring opportunity at that time - it may have been one on the next play depending on where the GK's fly hack went.

If anyone got sent off it should have been the CB for stupidity !

Officiating in the tie was average throughout - saw the Wanderers coaching team make a bee line for the officials after the match and wonder whether there might be some repercussions.

Yeah.  WeeNix missing 5 or more in Hong Kong and Blake and co with the U20s so Wests seemed to give a couple of youngsters a run as well.  Pretty even game that had periods of dominance from both teams.  Weenix butchered some first half chances but result probably fair in the end.

Final goal came after Stroud was cleaned up (clearly fouled) and left prone so the WeeNix were short on defence.

I didnt see it just commenting on what could result in a red card to the keeper.

Most back passes the keeper picks up as its contentious as to whether it was a back pass or not either that or he accidentally handles.
However if the keeper blatantly picks up from an under hit pass to prevent the opponent from getting to it first. I think that is the same as purposely bringing down the attacker when on goal...Red

Law 12 of the Laws of the Game lists the categories of misconduct for which a player may be sent off....The goalkeeper may not and cannot be sent off for denying a goal or a goal scoring opportunity by handling the ball in his penalty area;       That is as it is stated specifically in Law 12

Something Different - I was just told that Ferrymead Bays had a young lady sitting on the bench as the reserve Keeper.  While I'm all for having more women playing - can you do that?

It's all legit. Vic Esson (ex Coastal) has dispensation to play Men's as she is linked with NZ duty and is able to get more practice in by playing in that division.

was he already under cation of a yellow?

2 yellows = red

otherwise there is something else as a back pass is as already mentioned a yellow at most like obstruction.

i do hope this is not going to be a cover up.

if wrong was done then it needs to be admitted even if the result stands.

it was a straight red for the Wanderers goalkeeper. He was sent off for deliberately stopping a goal scoring opportunity according to the ref

My understanding is that a goalkeeper cannot be sent off for handling the ball in his own penalty area, law 12 .

Let's make it clear that the sending off didn't cost Wanderers the game but they want the player cleared to play the  next game

I can't see why picking the ball up when you shouldn't can't be a red card for DOGSO.

If, by picking the ball up, he denied what would otherwise have been a clear goal scoring opportunity then I think it is entirely open to the ref to send him off.

Or it should be?

not if there is a rule specifically saying it's not - it's actually smart keeping really, take the indirect free kick instead of possibly conceding.

I would hope the player is available for this weekend, sense should prevail.

so a defender back passes a ball towards his own goal and the keeper picks it up.

if the keeper didn't touch it it was going to go in the goal so a red?

now if we are looking at the "professional foul" rule then maybe but a keepers job is to stop goal scoring attempts/opertunities

From a referee PoV, the coaching we get is that this line as part of Law 12 is to mean that a keeper can't be sent for DOGSO from a passback.

Interesting topic around the red card to the keeper. Page 120 of LotG cover offences committed by goalkeepers and restarts. Handling a back pass is an iDFK restart only.

Is that even a yellow card offence? Poor refereeing decision right there. As Choppah said - smart keeping. Pulled this one out a few times then punt the ball away as quick as possible before the ref blows and the other team take a quick one.
