Chatham Cup

Dunedin Technical needed just 9min to breach Miramar Rangers' supposedly impregnable defence and pave the way for an upset in the quarterfinal of the Chatham Cup at the Caledonian Ground yesterday afternoon.

The Wellington-based side had not conceded a goal in eight matches but was left stunned after a brilliant effort by midfielder Andy Coburn.

The home side went on to win the match 2-1 but has to wait until the draw is made tomorrow morning to find out who it will play in the semifinals and where the match will be held. The semifinals are scheduled for the third weekend in August.

Technical coach Mike Fridge is hoping his side's luck holds and it secures a home venue when the draw is made. He was pleased with the way his side had recovered from a 5-2 drubbing at the hands of Caversham in the Soccersouth premier league last weekend.

"I'm absolutely delighted, especially after last week against Caversham," Fridge said.

"What a difference seven days can make in football. The world was on top of us last week but we bounced back and I thought the boys were magnificent.

"Miramar are a good side. They're at the top of their league and they don't concede many goals, and they've got quality players, so it is a fantastic result for the club."

Miramar had been in irrepressible form. Unbeaten in the Central League and with a formidable back four, the North Island side was expected to be too strong for Dunedin Technical.

But the home side played some masterful football in the opening stanza. It pushed forward at every opportunity and caught Miramar napping.

The visiting side travelled to Dunedin on the morning of the match and had three hours of waiting around, and it showed.

The game's first goal came from a crisply struck penalty kick by Ross McKenzie. Miramar keeper Dylan Hall made the first of many superb saves but the deflection broke for Mike Flaws, who delivered a pin-point cross into Coburn. He won the battle in the air, heading the ball into the right corner.

Technical kept up the pressure with a series of assaults on the Miramar goal.

Coburn intercepted a pass and made a run up the left flank, feeding a nice ball forward for McKenzie, who drew another dazzling save.

The keeper thrust out a left leg and arm and steered the ball wide of the goal.

Disappointment for Tech soon turned to delight when striker Richard Smith nodded in another fine cross.

The first 30min had been all the home team.

"We knew they had a flight and were coming straight to the ground, so our plan was to take the game to them early doors. We knew the first 15-20min would be crucial. We got two goals and I think that probably gave them a wee bit of a shake," Fridge said.

Miramar coach Graham Little said his side was flat.

"We lost the game in the first 20min," he said. "I take my hat off to Dunedin, they put us under a lot of pressure and we didn't respond to that, and started the game very poorly."

Little blamed his side's mindset for the sluggish beginning and said the early goal rocked his team.

"We did look a bit stunned for the first 20min but we got ourselves back in the game."

With Technical seemingly in control Miramar increased the tempo and started to dominate both possession and territory.

Technical bunched in defence and looked as though it was playing to protect its lead and get to the break without conceding a goal.

Nik Tromp found room down the right wing and fired a shot wide. The visiting side kept the pressure on Tech and a goal seemed inevitable. Fittingly, it was Tromp who scored.

The speedy forward freed himself of his marker and speared in a header which deflected off a defender and into the goal.

Spurred by the late first-half goal, Miramar had the better of the early exchanges in the second spell, but the longer the game went on the more it appeared that Technical was heading for the semifinals.

Fridge made some substitutions early in the second half, with Mike Cunningham replacing Flaws and experienced striker Aaron Burgess spelling Richard Smith. Both substituted men left the field with their heads held high after making crucial contributions.

Cunningham almost scored with his first touch. He sliced a shot wide towards the goal but a retreating defender got his body in the way and the deflection bounced off the post and was scooped up by a relieved keeper.

Miramar had opportunities to score an equaliser. Striker Dominic Rowe made some classy touches and Craig Alderdice headed the ball over the crossbar.

David Batty put some testing long balls forward and a desperate scramble in Technical's goalmouth in the final minutes almost sent the game into extra time.

Ahem, we're not Auckland. We're North Shore.

Has anyone noticed the resemblance between Glenfield Rovers kit and Newcastle's?  Black stripes yes, and yellow too.  Either way they had Alan Shearer give a talk last year at Glenfield Rovers and a coaching session to the juniors.

It's a great set-up they have on the Shore as well, although from memory drainage isn't superb on that top pitch.

So now not only are we responsible for supporting and following the two wellington sides, we're now expected to attend every single wellington team's game everywhere around the country, even when they are direct rivals of our own clubs and playing in Dunedin and Nelson at the same time as our own games (and I know Feversih had two games this weekend).

Probably one of your most pathetic bits of sh*t stirring ever HT.

Mr Ted rather than annoy everyone on this forum perhaps you could be helpful and give me some info onJason Hicks, the goal scorer for glenfield in the last minute yesterday. I assume the Ak football community is the same as the Wgtn football community in that everyone knows everyone, therefore you should be able to tell me if Hicks is exWellington or if I'm completely on the wrong track. Thanks.

I dont actually know that much about Hicks he went to the u17 world cup i think with colin tua last year i havent seen any US1 games this season
he might of played in wellington he was at Albany early last season before moving to Glenfield

Hicks has been on the Shore for years he was at Albany when he was about 11 or 12 then went to Bays for a few seaons then back to Albany then onto the 1st team at Glenfield. Last year he was only a fringe player but he seems to be standing out more this season. Quite a useful player, very cocky though.

Three for me, and two for them.

I've deleted all the rubbish.

James Dean has covered most of the response points nicely.  No one wins by lowering stupidity levels to Phil's.

Where is the final?  And is it possible for it to be in Dunedin/Nelson?  While you might have a smaller ground it could be a good event for one of those places and might draw a bit more interest...

Tune in to Radio Sport on Tuesday morning for the live draw of the 81st Chatham Cup semi-finals.

North Shore clubs East Coast Bays and Glenfield Rovers join Nelson Suburbs as semi-final debutants while Dunedin Tech the last South Island club to win the 85 year old trophy will look to emulate their cup winning run of 1999.

For the first time since 1995, two South Island clubs have made it to the final four. Will the draw throw them together for the August 16/17 semis and ensure a North v South final or will it keep them apart and make an all South Island (or all or North Island) final a possibility?

Find out when Brendan t***er (again) pulls the names out of the trophy (in front of a representative from each of the four clubs) live on air at around 11.15am.

Thanks for that.
My next comment probably belongs on another thread, but that result is great for US1. Perhaps the doomsayers who said the departure from Northern League by US1 sides would result in a lowering of standards have got it wrong. Two US1 sides in the semis. No Northen League sides in the semis. No Central League sides in the semis either including Miramar who are the best side in CL by a country mile. Maybe the regional leagues don't actually result in higher standards?

The same thought had crossed my mind rightstr.  While everyone looked for political reasons, maybe they just had it right ?

The move was always all about saving clubs from themselves, forcing them to stop paying stupid money to players and redirect it into coaching and facilities. Quite farsighted when you think of it like that and brave given the flak the guy got both on this forum and on the radio. But a good test of standards will be the game between the CL winner and the US1 league winner at the end of this season. Although i haven't heard whether that is still going ahead.

Is that happening though ?  I'm looking at some of the names there and I suspect the player payment budgets for ECB and Glenfield have not changed much at all.

the path to hell is paved with good intentions....even most of the Glenfield fans agreed that carving up the regions teams wasnt for the best of the games future....

at least one Glenfield fan will be dropping huge wheelies somewhere...we was out coached on the day well done Craig Alexander....poss Ak City coach (hell will be too cold for most matches)

If Tech get it the Caledonian isn't a bad ground, got a good grandstand there, could possibly even be held at the brook, not sure how possible that is but i know they have had football games there before.

Cheers HN. Interesting draw there, still with the possiblilty of an all Shore final, although that may be rather bittersweet as i wouldn't have a clue who i would support.

Not sure of the strength of the Southern Leagues but here are my semi-ignorant predictions:

Dunedin 2 Glenfield 1

Bays 3 Nelson 1

Think this will be the end of the road for Gfield but they will give Tech a run. Pretty sure Bays will make their first final here but like i said not sure how strong Nelson really are just plumping for Bays based on their phenomenal record this season and home advantage.

Three for me, and two for them.

Glenfield 10-3 thrashing of North Shore and
Lynn-Avon's 7-1 win over Mt Albert-Ponsonby on saturday
would suggest otherwise?
yes there are good sides on the Shore,  Like Glenfield & ECB
but there isnt 10 of them just like the northern league
which has rubbish like Three Kings in it
surely there is more benefit ti Glenfield and ECB playing decent teams every week?

Yeah the US1 move from Northern League was more about spending $50k on player development than on travel & US1 doesn't pay refs (apparently).
Is it true that the US1 league leader gets a tournament against the top 3 VPL (Victorian League)?

Either way if Glenfield had hosted Tech, you've needed gumboots at McFetridge Park not footie boots.

The top four at the end of the US1 Premiership go into a US1 Presidents Cup, where the winner will get to play against a side in Queensland sometime in September. US1 will also send an Under 18 side to Queensland at the same time.

Fantastic Draw for the mighty Technical
Miramar did not play bad football and tech still beat them so i reckon tech might make the final.
And so there might be a chance of a Dunedin final C'mon NELSON

Actually Is there going to be any radio/tv coverage of the final?

Bays should win it pretty easily, no one has come anywhere near them this season. Waitakere did manage to get over halfway on a few occasions but bays would have had about 80% of the possesion

Only difference being Nelso have still drawn a few games. Bays have won every single one.
