Shirley Boys High should be the best of the Christchurch schools with St Andrews not far behind.
Stac maybe a one player team though [Tane Gent] which could get found out at Nats.
Whats with the format these days of having 5 Chch schools and 6 if you include Timaru Boys who used to be in the Chch qualifying group,
is this a feel good football tournament? Maybe helps to make the weaker schools feel good about playing sport when Nayland or Mags put double figures past them.

How did Middleton Grange qualify?

From Wellington you've also got one team from Div 2 (Hutt International) and two teams from Div 1 (Wellington College and Silverstream) rather than three teams from Div 1.  This has something to do with wildcards but nobody has actually been able to explain to me how it has happened.

I believe the College final is on today at Wakefield Park at 5.45pm - between Wellington College and St Pat's Silverstream.

Today's match at Wakefield at 5.45 is actually a 1 v 4 semi (W College v Stream).
( Stream back to full strength with Basalaj and Higgins)

Other semi is tomorrow at 3.30 at TE WHAEA
(2 v 3) St Pats Town v Para

Also at 5.45 today at Wakefield 2 is the Girls Final. East v HVHS

Boys Final is after Tournament week.
Scheduled for WEDNESDAY 31 August at WAKEFIELD at 7.15 pm

Spurs are you getting to an age where you can't tell the difference between a semi and the full noise?

I'm pretty sure the girls game has been transferred to Te Whaea on the 31st August at 4pm... Can someone confirm this?JanelleRT2011-08-17 11:18:29

First semi. Wellington College win on penalties.

Keenly fought game between these two old rivals in conditions which did not make for a great spectacle.

Chch/canty has had 4 qualifying slots for the last few years, Timaru opted to join the southern qualy system (can ya blame them?).

Grange got a wild card.

Wild cards are apparantly based on the inter school friendlies/traditionals played through out the year eg: OBHS vs CBHS, St Bedes vs Silverstream etc, it is my understanding from there the next best team in qualifying for the 'stronger' regions gain wildcard spots. Eg: Grange qualifyed 5th in chch but the chch region was deemed stronger than Waikato [or whoever]

MAGS also beat Nayland College (replay of last year's semi-final) not sure of the score though. Nayland had previously beaten Shirley Boy's High 2-1 with Gagame Feni and Cory Brown scoring. I guess St Peter's vs Nayland could potentially be a winner take all game, assuming they beat Shirley this afternoon.Luis Garcia2011-08-22 19:16:13

Bit hard to read I know, but this gives you the two teams, then the venue, then the winner and the score.

Today's results aren't on the web yet (surprise), but Spurs sent me a text saying:

3-2 win (which I think means Wellington College won 3-2), Stream in quarters.

I think those two things are unrelated.  So I think Wellington College beat St. Kentigern College 3-2, and I think Stream must have beaten St. Andrews and so both are now in the quarter finals.

In fact it is possible that they will play each other?  I'm not sure how the draw goes.

Nelson and Nayland College both in to the quarter finals of secondary school football nationals. Two teams from Nelson in the top eight in New Zealand is huge for the region. Nelson are a much more balanced side without many stars, Nayland on the other hand rely soley on Gagame Feni and Jerry Donga while Isaiah Dayman and Cory Brown are also handy and have Mainland Premier League experience.

I haven't checked, but I think the Nelson region has the same number of teams in the quarter final stage as the Wellington region does.
