suspension was overruled by tournament commitee not sure if he swore at ref , player who had just scored or just pissed off with himself for not saving penalty but he said it loud enough to be heard from the sideline

EAST also won girls final. Not a good night for the Hutt.

Roll on a couple of years to 2015:  HIBS defeated Wellington High 17 - 0 in the Premier/Div 1 Grading Round. Not a good year for Wellington High's First XI Football Team.

(HIBS also went on to beat Wellington College 3 - 1 in the 2015 Premier Boys Final and St Marys defeated Hutt High on penalties in 2015 Girls Final.)

Three years between posts in this thread shows that the only folks who give a shark are the kids. It's a fun comp, not a meaninful one.

I watched these Finals on Wednesday night at Petone, 2 really good games to watch Hutt High up 2 nil ended 2-2 and then they lost on pens, in the Boys game ended 3-1 to Hibs, this game was as good as any Cap Premier game I have seen this season and a great atmosphere with all the supporters, then 2 finish it off 2 great Haka's from the supporters to there teams, Magic

Entertaining for sure. But it's a very low quality competition. Belongs on Wednesday nights.

Not according to some Principals who are win at all costs.

It is however a great improvement on a few decades ago where Rugby was the only sport allowed to be played at some schools. We also do not have schools forcing kids to play for them as more parents are prepared to stand up to schools and hire a lawyer.

Its funny reading these because sometimes its harder to ascertain who is being the mature one, the teen that plays or the parent of said child.

Not just football. All sports at schools in Auckland are a big deal. Reminds me of the states a bit. Incredible the resources they put into it here. It's clearly important to all involved from board/old boys to the teachers and students their families.

JFC. So they don't realise that it literally means nothing other than "school pride", and that people with that kind of pride and considered incredibly wanky by literally everyone else?

Isn't that just a matter of who has the best set up? Sounds like some of those Schools in Auckland are quite well resourced.

Partly.

The biggest issue with school football is that, because there is not freedom of movement between schools like there is clubs, it creates uneven competitions.

Generally, the largest boys' school will dominate because of playing resources. That can be distorted by demographics, scholarships etc.

But if you're at a school that is shark at football but you are quite good, your option to move is quite tough.

If you're at a school that is good at football, but you don't quite make the top squad, again you're a bit f*cked.

The result is that the best players don't play against the best players as often as they do in club comps (where players can move more or less freely).

And that is why school football is mostly recreational. At least to most folks.

Agreed, I know several of them and they are a good bunch. Also nice to see a team not from Auckland going this far, and knocking some big schools out on the way! Nelson set up is now familiar to that of the big AKL schools, so it's no wonder they're up there.

it's not quite that simple in Auckland - if like you say your at a crap school then move and play for a good club - vice versa if your at a good school and not getting a look in then play club football instead.

The problems arise when schools (or clubs) try and demand to a player that their patch is greener than everyone else's.

Club and school are almost entirely exclusive here - there would be very few (if any) kids who are playing First Team football and First XI (in the top league) at the same time.

There was another thread that asked what we needed to do to develop better international players, one step would be to make schools play midweek and let them train the boys 3 or 4 times a week on skills and then let them play on the weekends and train a couple of times a week with their club for exposure to high level competition - schools provide the contact time and clubs provide the competition.

Probably will never happen in Auckland but it would make a massive difference.

Excellent to see the large crouds that  turned out in Nelson, a city with a fine football tradition over many decades.
