Future of the Central League

What does everyone think about the future of the Central League?

With Taranaki gone and Petone in (good on ya boys)

There is also talk about Gisborne pulling out due to money concerns and Palmerston North Marist also having the same concerns.
Word on the street is that Wests have concerns about the length of the NZFC and their ability to put a good team on the park.

The league could potentially be a Wgtn 7 team competition with NCR.

Any ideas?

get the Miramar second team in there. They would be competitive with Thomo at the helm

I heard Miramar have the same thoughts as Wests regarding availability of NZFL players.
Will Napier be happy to travel to Wgtn every second week? I like to see 8 team comp playing 3 Rds ( a Couple double Headers)that would be a very close comp and that would still leave Cap Premier a very competive league as well!

Over the years we have see sawed between having the wider regional competition and having a more local one. The current attempt seems about to fail (surprise surprise). The travel and high costs of the Central league make no sense - all the teams have to be propped up by sponsorship or fees on Juniors/Social players (or in the case of Gissie just straightforward show off entreprenuers pretending to be Abramovich). Noone supporting Petone, Sop Out or Wests really care about an exciting trip to NP, PN or Napier, they much prefer the local derbys!

Finance should support the NZ League level (Team Wellington) with local competitions as feeders. Playoffs for a Cup between local comp winners would be a good finish to the season with the final played as a curtain raiser to a Phoenix game perhaps.

Unfortunately players and coaches want CL and admin bow to them because they don't want their best players toddling off somewhere else for their beer money. I agree, CL makes no economic and football sense when TW should be the flagship but I suspect CL will carry on regardless until it dies a natural death.

It is sad but its also true that the Central League is a huge financial drain on already stretched clubs. Some clubs are lucky enough to have a lot of financial backing (Wests with Wilson, Greeks with Fish and Chips, Lower Hutt with pubs and drugs, Stop Out with a huge inheritance) but not everyone is that fortunate. As much as I love Petone and I am stoked about their promotion, I think the best thing for Wellington football is a well structured local league and a genuine reserve league like we had pre Central League. It was a great competition and very close as well. Not only that but it was also a lot cheaper to run. The furthest you ever had to go was to Kapiti from Island Bay. OK, so Wairarapa would need to be in the league but its always nice to have a road trip.

Its no longer a problem.

Maybe clubs should not pay the players as much as they do then some of the players might return to their original clubs and the local competition would be more even. The thing going for the Central league players get to play away and we who watch football get to see a couple of different teams. Who remember who one the Central league from year? alot of money spent on what?

Wairarapa and Tawa look strong enough to play CL, just need one more and there's a very strong local league. Need a reserve league which feeds the top team like we had a few years ago where the youth can also be developed.

Would be quite nice not flying back from Gisborne in the middle of winter in a tin can of a plane

I played Capital Premier in 2006 and CL 2007. There is a big difference in standard and adding IsLand Bay, Karori, Tawa etc would just make the league more competitive for Stop Out, Well Utd and Petone. I still think Wests, Miramar, Greeks and LH would make their own little league at the top. The financial strain of the travel is a problem though but you can't beat a trip back on the road after winning at Park Island.

Keep the Central League otherwise the central region teams will be even worse than they are now! Also, if they scrap it we might have to go back to Wakefield, Karori, or Redwood parks again. Lets leave those grounds for the lower grade teams and let the big boys play on the real grounds in the region.

Obviously you are unaware of all of the developments happening at Hutt Park.

It will be one of the best parks in the region!!

Maybe read a few posts before bagging others mate.  Toffeeman is Mr Petone and knows his stuff.  Do your research

Actually the main main field is being bulldozed in the next week or two. How did you know

crikey, the wharfies boys are a defensive bunch aren't they?!

the raceway used to be one of the best fields around, but years of neglect have taken their toll.  good to see it a tad better this season, but it's still well off the mark.  hopefully the latest attempts to fix it will work.

Went down to Hutt Raceway to have a look. Huge earthworks with the bulldozer having done its job! Hope the pitch laying is done to quality standards (unlike the Hutt2 pitches) so stones dont come through for years ahead. The end result will produce a bowl like structure with grassed banks overlooking the new pitch. When the new buildings (including changing rooms) are built it should be a good facility for football.

What ever happens, Gisbourne have definately pulled out and it looks like Taranaki will get a 2nd life.

I guess this is good as it will save clubs some money in travel and still keeps it a cental league so to speak.

I seriously recon they should scrap Taranaki and have a one off play off between Warfies and Tawa at a neutral venue for the other spot. We all saw how much better Petone were than Taranaki and Warfies beat Petone once druing the season. Taranaki should have a team but only if they're good enough. They clearly aren't. Its a club league, not a representitive league. You have to be good enough to play not just be from the right area.

You can't change the rules now Toffeeman, It happened a couple of years ago when Stop Out beat Red Sox in the play off games only for Havelock to pull out giving Red Sox the second life.

Any way there is no better feeling than actually earning the right to play in the top leauge and it is something that is earnt not given of right.

Petone have had to do it the hardway (and you should know that better than anyone) by winning their leauge and playing there way through the play offs. So Waterside / Tawa / any team should have to do the same!
