i'm sure you have all heard 'play the whistle'...?
the reason the penalty taker attacked the ball (after it hit the back crossbar and bounced out of the goal) was that the ref hadn't called it yet, and i sure wasn't prepared to trust that the ref would make the right call... eventually.
Problem is, if it hadn't gone in and if the penalty taker had touched it a second time ie direct from the rebound of the post/crossbar, it would be an indirect free kick to the defending team.
Law 14 - The Penalty Kick
Procedure
� the player taking the penalty kicks the ball forward
� he does not play the ball a second time until it has touched
another player
� the ball is in play when it is kicked and moves forward
Infringements/Sanctions
The kicker touches the ball a second time (except with his hands)
before it has touched another player:
� an indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team, the kick
to be taken from the place where the infringement occurred
