I know with the on going issues with the quakes the ChCh City Council / City Care are extremely busy but in recent weeks I have noticed that parks are in the need of a good mow and even a roll. Too late now that the southerly has finally but hard to play decent footy on a cow paddock.

But every other first division game went ahead.
The referee pulled the pin on the match before kick-off at Jubilee Park due to thunder and lightning.
The Blenheim-based Mariners had already arrived in Richmond, meaning they had to turn around and head back home without kicking a ball.
It means Richmond, last season's champions, now have three catch-up matches to play.
In the fixtures that did go ahead, the Nelson Suburbs First XI had to come back from a goal down to get past FC Nelson Metro 3-1 at Saxton Field.
Lee Stirling opened the scoring for Metro soon after the halftime break.
Ross McPhie equalised 10 minutes later, and Nathaniel Payn gave his side the lead on the 70-minute mark.
Player-coach Mark Sheehan made the result secure with a 87th minute header.
At Guppy Park, FC Nelson United beat FC Nelson College 3-0. United's Sean Parkes missed a penalty after 25 minutes, but his side got on the score sheet twice before the break.
Hram had a simple tap in after 35 minutes, after good work by Derryn French down the flank, while another cross allowed Jonny Gough to score.
Parkes, the team's top scorer, rounded out the scoring action in the second half with a brilliant solo effort, beating three defenders before knocking the ball in at the far post.
Points: Marlborough Mariners 29, Richmond Athletic 28, FC Nelson United 16, FC Nelson College 13, Nelson Suburbs 13, FC Nelson Metro 0.

FMD Richmond still have 10 league games to go and FC2011 finish their Div 1 competition in 3 more games. Even if Mainland throw in a league cup competition it leaves them several weeks short of competitive games going into the play offs. 10 weeks from now takes us into October for the start of the play offs. That's crazy. Will they play Saturday/Sunday like we have down here to get the league finished sooner? They shouldn't have cancelled Saturday, there was no danger to players and all other games went ahead, what the hell is going on?

I was in Nelson at the Coastal/Suburbs game, the thunder and lightening was intermittent and in the hills and no danger to anyone. Was quite exciting flying out through it. All other games proceeded. The only possible explanation was that the ground was either dangerous or unplayable. Given the state it was in after the Chatham Cup game that is quite possible but it would have been no worse than Saxton Fields. Ronaldoknow2011-07-12 21:39:16

Maybe Mainland believed the hype and thought Richmond should have already won their league by now?

There's plenty of spare fields around too. Game should have gone ahead.
clubs will not 'catch up' while the players they developed are then poached into an Elitist Academy. Football is a team sport not this insane concept of getting my kid signed to a pro team.
It's also arguable those sides are any better than the club teams individuals have left.Certainly the club my whanau belongs to has had teams of a higher standard than what the Academy could present. It's also clear that financial ability is as important as football ability. This perpetuates into the Rep program and directly forces good players out off the game.
Ronaldoknow - I agree in principle with devt in local catchment area as it is all about developing the game in your own backyard. BUT clubs need the qualified peronnel and resources to be able to offer it. From my perspective a club has to be broad-church - ie cater for players of all abilities; but for the top 1-2% I agree they should have higher aspirations than playing in the flippin Mainland league.
And Foal, what on earth is wrong with kids having those aspirations? Bill Tuiloma is trialling for LA Galaxy and he was only as good as a current certain Coastal player of similar age when they played each other a couple of years back. Money should NEVER be a reason not to make a rep team. Mainland have a player hardship fund, don't they?
Yep it's all sour grapes. It's all about me and I have no desire to support my club or the betterment of junior football. In fact all I care about is my eldest son who is in the top 1 or 2%.
My priority is not on Mainland (or whoever) focusing on the top 1 or 2%. However when it is time to develop and organize what we may call 'high achievers' the process needs to be transparent and still considering the needs and standards of the entire Association/Federation.
I do not wish any of this to read as "my favorite player didn't get picked".

Absodoodle. And this is the area Mainland should be operating in. Identify key clubs in key areas and stick the FDO's in there, get them on the grass and get them working. make the WOF programme accountable to the clubs and get the double whammy from that scenario, meanwhile backing it up with topline administrative support. This is now starting to happen with Colin Grant getting out and about with his new role of game development manager.
2-0. Those identified clubs then must market the game to everybody in their area, liaise with schools etc. Start shifting the soil to uncover those nuggets that would benefit from a properly structured development programme while the social stream are still catered to.
And Foal, what on earth is wrong with kids having those aspirations?
3-0. Going strong. All kids are essentially dreamers, some of us never recover.

4-0. Game over. My own club is guilty of excluding kids from the beautiful game on financial grounds, with Junior subs at $100 no wonder Rugby League has such a foothold in our area (Celebration Lions, Linwood Keas, Aranui Sea Eagles) where the junior subs range from free to $35. Even rugby with a $50 sub can't compete. In the past we have supported rep players with a $50 donation but even that has become financially out of our reach with 20 odd players making the grade last year. Maybe that's where Mainland should stick their hardship money? I know when Mike Coggan came out to the club recently to get some guidance from us on how they could distribute the $115,000 they had put aside for a relief fund he wanted to know if we could identify who was no longer in the game for financial reasons. We answered honestly and said we did not have that data nor could we provide it. At Coastal we know of only 6 kids no longer with the club for earthquake related reasons, however the club is looking at a massive hole in its budget due to loss of income from Bexley so how about making a grant to the clubs like us affected through loss of facilities? It will be interesting to see the outcome of any decision. Key criteria should be the non-payment of senior players to qualify. Now wouldn't that be a doozy of a decision!

The Nelson game will be interesting as Nayland College are playing in Australia at the moment.
Which means no Gagame Feni, no Jerry Donga, no Isaiah Dayman. Three pretty handy starting players.

Any slim chance tech had of reclaiming the title is gone now. Bays gamble has payed off
Wind was massive, favouring Utd in the first half. Hard for anyone to get a hold on the ball. Coastal did well to score from a cross, first goal by Turnbull, and Moir smashed in a nice goal. 2-0 at half and at full time. 2nd half Coastal dominated with the wind and Utd struggled to get out of their own half, when they did on occasion they could have scored. 2-0 at the end.
United Coastal game was a fairly free flowing game in spite of the strong southerly blowing down the pitch with Coastal easily the better side and could easily been up 3 or 4 nil by half time. Ando off at half time for United saw Coastal take a strong grip on the game for the next 25 minutes but couldn't add to the 2-0 half time scoreline. United then gained some parity in the last 20 but couldn't buy a goal (Matty Thomas making one spectacular save form a 30 yard effort that would have gone in)with some fairly insipid attacking play. Goal of the game a cracking right foot first time volley from Dan Moir half way through the first half.

So Nomads need to win 3 out of 5 & Utd lose all 5 remaining games to be safe. Nomads remaining opponents in order are Halswell (a), Tech (h), Coastal (a), United (h) & Western (a). Which 3 can you see them beating? Maybe Halswell & United but that's about it. Gone burger.
