Some big games coming up in Div 1 according to the snapshot.  Chch Utd could take it out of reach even with a reinstatement of 3 points for Uni with a win over Waimak.  Then on Tuesday night, Uni play Waimak in a rematch of the infamous "referee-gate" incident of 2013. I might even brave the cold for a look at that one.

Canterbury United Dragons

Canterbury United has appointed Alan Walker as the 2013 Canterbury United Youth Head Coach.

Walker has coached the team successfully in the past, winning the title 2 of the 3 seasons he held the reins.

Walker is excited about further developing the youth players that are coming through the talent programmes from around the region. “I’ve enjoyed the role immensely in the past, and look forward to working with Keith and the Club in continuing to see Canterbury United succeed on the national stage.”

One of Walker’s first tasks will be to identify the up and coming players to challenge the established players to field the best team possible. An assistant coach will be appointed in due course.

Walkers appointment also goes some way to addressing perceptions (accurate or otherwise) of closed shop regime of Halligan.

Bit of a knee in the nuts to Danny Halligan though, did not making the final in a high stakes gimme final game against Otago cost him the job?

FMD reads like an obituary for Canterbury football.
Still, would be good to see a Mainland team make the semi finals at least. Then the PTB Waimak lot could dream of "what if we'd beaten Cashmere ...................................."

Makes me laugh that, Halligan's appointment after Walker had won the league last year was to promote engagement with the local clubs. ROFLMAO. When you look at the last NYL squad and the current Cashedup Tech MPL team other clubs may as well flag Canterbury United and let them play under the CTFC banner.
And what changes will we see at Bays next season. Hardly anyone turns up to Tuesday night training's  Highfield and Kamo didn't play in the Chatham Cup because they don't get paid for it, struggling to stay with the top 2 in the MPL, will it all turn ugly in 2014 or can they turn it around now?

Having been a part of the Chatham Cup game (tech vs bays) Kamo did play and Highfield was suspended for 2 games so nothing to do with the rubbish about not being paid for it.

I hope not R'know, I'd much prefer other clubs raise their own aspirations. Of course this topic quickly leads to "fair playing field" and/or "player payments"; but to me, truly successful clubs are ones that develop talent, not buy trophies. How many local kids who've been through the Cashmere or Technical junior ranks are in that MPL team? Do Cashmere Tech care? If they were to win the Chatham Cup, do the means justify the end?

How many clubs in the league can say they have an Mpl team with lots of players coming through their "junior ranks". This is an amateur league where player movement occurs very often and also many of the better young players play school football till 17/18 then join a club. Most of the Canterbury youth team players you can't link to a certain team they played for in their younger days.

Didn't half of the 'Danny Halligan Squad' originally move from Nomads to Tech?

Yes. But in football, coaches who move always want to take their players with them. It then comes down to whether the players want to follow. In this case they did and having trained under Danny you can see why they wanted to carry on with him. Unfortunately only a couple of these remain at tech.

Strike one. Actually given Waimak's recent episode should probably consider this strike 2.
Would hate to be the club who next steps out of line.

I'm a firm believer of never letting the boring truth get in the way of a salacious rumor.

Back up the bus Norf, ambitious coaches don't want to take all the players, just the better ones. They'd just as soon drop the earnest tryer for a super star as the parents would drop him once the vision of the coach delivering the holy grail for their son/daughter starts to fade.

So Norfolk, I take it by your response that the answer is very few. I'd be interested in numbers from around the MPL clubs. My guess is Bays and Cashmere would be amongst the lowest in this amateur league. Interesting.

Also, am I correct in assuming that you don't care/it's not important? Fair enough but shouldn't a club the massive size of Cashmere have greater aspirations to develop players rather than 'persuade' them in?

By the way, those school football players don't play for schools until 14, so they've started their football at a club beforehand.

Ground change: Men's PFL game between Halswell and Cashmere Technical now moved to ASB Football Park - appears The Nest is more than a little soggy.

Woohoo!  Search for @coastalspiritnz and you will get all the score updates I'm at. If you search for #chchmpl then you will see any tweets that have been made that the person has used that hashtag.  So when you tweet, you add #chchmpl and then I or others can search that and see live scores. What's your username?

Amazing!

Interesting round this on Saturday maybe a couple of 'banana skin' games for Technical and Bays after good results from Halswell and Nomads, if Bays drop mores points then there title race could be over.

Another tought one for FC Twenty11, cannot see Suburbs being rolled and the Coastal and Western should be a goodie. Love the end of season run.

Also do not forgot the top of the table clash in the Women's PFL and after Coastal's big win over Western last week and should start favourites.

Think the problem may be the fact the Council opened the pitches at Tullet when they shouldn't have..... Teams turned up today from what I heard only for it to be postponed.... Why would either team want to postpone it whilst they were there?

Oh and don't forget that little thing called rain that happened over night and this morning.... but don't let that get in the way of sticking a boot in ;)
