Kicks off in Napier next week, who's everyones tipping? Nayland College have arguably the best attack in the competition, but their defense and depth could be found wanting.Luis Garcia2010-08-26 11:16:41

Nayland generally have a decent squad and get themselves into the top 8 frequently. But due to the money and coaching involved, schools like Auckland Grammar and MAGS will always have to be considered favourites.

Napier Boy's who have recently been strong are weak this year. With alot of Young players but guess that's good for next year or so.

Either MAGS or AGS will win it.

Three for me, and two for them.

I heard MAGS have lost heaps of their players from last year? - I guess they always have a strong side so might not make much difference.

The thing is, they constantly have players coming through Fallons coaching program. They train every morning and have consistent games in a quality league. For them not to do well would be ridiculous.

St Patricks Silverstream, Havent lost all year... they must be coming to the tournment with a chance. They have a pretty strong squad plus the top 3 scorers in the Wellington comp.

For some reason the guy at napier boys thinks that central football charge to much, when i know for a fact that Hockey, Basketball and Netball all charge more in hawkes bay.

I think that he is just trying to say that the Price used to be nothing and now its slowly risen to quite a steap amount and there not to happy about it. Running it by themselves surely is fine?

Yes Silversteam have gone the whole year in the Wellington competition without dropping a point and are a class above the other Wellington teams. When has a Wellington team ever done that? I still can't see them making the final or even semis. It will still be very tough when competing with MAGS, Auckland Grammar, Sacred Heart, PNBHS and Nayland. I can't see either Wellington College or Tawa College making it into the top 6 though as they are not strong enough. I would love to be proved wrong with Silverstream and see a Wellington team take it out and bring the cup to Wellington. When was the last time a Wellington team has won it... and the Wellington teams just haven't had a good showing since 2006 when Tawa and Wellington both lost in their semis vs MAGS and PNBHS respecively. Auckland have had more domination and I can't see it changing this year either.

Yeah fair call footballmad, The auckland school teams are strong. i suppose anything can happen at tourny.. MAGS were in the 5th and 6th playoff in my year at nationals. Tauranga boys and AGS played the final..
i assume Nayland College have half the under 17 Solomon Island team..

Schools are only interested in the players while they are at school, schools take all the glory while their teams are doing well, so they can use it to make out how great they are, when the players involved leave school they have been used and are quickly forgotten. Unfortunatly because these kids have had little or no contact with clubs for a couple of years or so, yes sure some of them do have contact, but most of them get lost because they have no structure to look after them or there is no age group leagues, so their only options are senior football and that is not always an option for various reasons.

Clubs need to get into schools, but schools are not always that helpful, because schools want to be in control and see clubs as intruders. As I said before schools are only interested in themselves, not in the long term interest of pupils.

Thats my tuppence worth fire me down if you will.

They have two strikers who will be in the U-20 Solomon Island team for World Cup qualifying. (Both will be at Nayland next year too). Gagame Feni will be the one to watch, last year's Golden Boot winner and 99% chance he'll be in the Canterbury NZFC squad. Left midfielder Adam Smith has played for New Zealand U-17's and another attacking midfielder, Alex Ridsdale, has represented New Zealand for the U-15's and Secondary Schools team. So Nayland's attack will be good, but question marks over their defense.

Wow Really. Of course they do they use other facilities the schools in napier all have their own grounds etc so why would they want to pay 450 dollars a team to CF and then have to pay for the Refs. They should only have to pay for the refs for 1st XI games and like a 50dollar fee for the draw/results.

Don't hate on Mr Mcglashan he was my favorite PE teacher at school.

Yeah Nayland sounds strong.. could be a one man band with the solomon islander... Nelson college were like that in my day.

to be honest from the past experiences at U19's and School tournys, the team with the stronger defence generally go further.. Stream don't have to many stand out, but most of them have played together since they were juniors.. 11/12 years old.. there defence has been strong all year.. plus there goal keeper is class.

the current fees are still to high if you ask me, where does the $ that they pay now go??? someones pocket. I'm just trying to say why is he singling out football when other sports are just as bad.
Once again HB Today bring the game into a bad light by publishing crap like this.

Picking Christchurch Boys High to be in the final.
The pool C game with St Pats should be a good one to watch, both schools unbeaten at this part of the season.
CBHS have won every game played this season, GD of 67.

Schools are a blight on players and club football. This is the age that players drop out from playing.
They do nothing for the average youth player to continue in the game after leaving school.
The top players at 6th or 7th form are playing for a club, that is if they want to make the step and go overseas to play.
School football should and would be stronger if they played games on a Wednesday with all players available.
Players would then be able to continue there progress within the club structure into under 23 and senior football.
Mainland Football used to have duel registration allowing players to play for both school and club in the same season but in separate competitions.
Thanks to CBHS that doesn't happen anymore.
This is not just Boys only problem as Girls football has a bigger % drop out after school football.

Just do what cricket does and have a Rep compeition "super league" with kids at like U10's  all the way up to U18 on sundays or like a football tourney camp. In which club teams select the best  players from their club area to to play against the other clubs.

So you're offering to do the draws, transfers and cancellations, and results and tables, and the website maintenance regarding these for Central Football for $25 per week per division along with other stuff they do which I may have omitted.  Give them a ring and I think you'll be employed like a shot.
Re the accountability the schools wanted (an earlier post), how about the schools show the way with accounting for their "activity fees".
I agree that schools are a curse upon the football development of both their pupils and local clubs - and thus football in general.

Nayland College 4 - Tauranga Boys 2

Nayland captain Adam Smith has scored five goals so far, not bad for a midfielder.
