Will this NRFL ever end!!! The league is becoming a joke 13 teams because AFF don't want to upset anyone now it's dragging on possibly in to October. Integrity totally gone. Feel sorry for teams in relegation fight could possibly get shafted by manufactured results which could also decide champion. Why not have a firm end date and all games must be played by that date

Unfortunately this wasnt helped by the Mangere appeal about the inelegible player! I think Birko lost two games because of the uncertainty. Even their cup match against Springs was delayed for a week

Manurewa host Waitakere tonight in a catch-up match - if 'Rewa win, they are up to the top flight. If they don't, then Mt Albert-Ponsonby get promoted (Waitakere are already up).

Come on 'Rewa!

Something completely out of left-field.....

Why do sports clubs from the same town often wear different colours?

For instance, my hometown of Papakura - soccer and cricket are relatively aligned with blue and white....but rugby is red and black. And the league is white and maroon. Nearby Manurewa.....soccer is blue and yellow, cricket is a grey colour, rugby is green and white.

I thought maybe this was just a hopeless South Auckland thing, but I took a cursory look at Waitakere - soccer is black and white, cricket is red and blue. North Shore - maroon/gold soccer, yet navy/yellow cricket and rugby green/white.

How hard can it be for clubs from the same town to wear the same colours?

You're talking suburbs not towns. Auckland Blues + ACFC = blue & white. Wellington eggball + Nix = yellow & black. Canty eggball + Canty Utd = red & black, etc.

Probably just that in many cases, the Papakura (or whatever) league club covers different territory than the football club. i.e. Waitakere cricket covers a region that contains about 6 football clubs.

I can see that as a reasonable explanation for Waitak (but then, Waitak rugby is maroon and white......) - there's more football clubs than cricket clubs, for instance. But in the case of North Shore, or Papakura, or Fencibles/Howick-Pak etc that doesn't stand. Or when comparing soccer v rugby clubs, which would (by and large) share the same general boundaries, yet have different club colours

Not complaining about it, or even mildly concerned, just that it seems odd that clubs representing the same area often don't share the same or similar identity. (Papatoetoe does, as does Takapuna.....but I'd bet the suburbs with differences outnumber the suburbs with similarities)

Not having ever set up a club, I don't know how a clubs founding members would decide on club colours - though I would have thought tying it in with existing colours would have been a good first step

Big game tonight at North Harbour (Turf). Birkenhead v Western Springs. Last game of the season and if Springs win they stay up and Hamilton are relegated. If its a draw or Birkenhead win then Springs are relegated and Hamilton stay up !!!

What are you talking about? These extra games are down to the 'cock up' regarding the mangere ineligibity decision (or lack of one). They missed two weekend matches because of this. Having said that they did play Springs in a mid week away fixture as well as Central and are not allowed to play home fixtures mid week due to council restrictions. The club have actually lost a lot of money due to the fact they had to play the Glenfield home match at North Harbour as well as the Springs game tonight.

Couldnt play the Melville game due to a small matter of Chatham Cup Final

I suspect it's usually based on other supported clubs of the founders of the new club. Just as Juventus wears black and white because it was set up by Notts County fans, I wouldn't mind betting that Papakura City FC's founding fathers were QPR fans or similar. Papakura Sea Eagles wear maroon and white because they are a sister club of Manly Sea Eagles. Not sure about the rugby team.

Didnt stop them playing a league game v Central at the end of last season though did it.

And what has the Mangere thing got to do with it? Yes it caused a few games to be postponed but what did they do about the back log? Nothing until Chatham Cup was over. They did the same thing last season.

AFF didnt help but lets not blame them totally.....

My first club, Otahuhu United, copied Norwich's kit for that very reason. Western Springs were formed as a fusion of Pt Chevalier and Grey Lynn Celtic, and their kit is green and white hoops, which may not be a coincidence.

Obviously a Glenfield supporter! That game against Central got the club into trouble and they were warned not to play any serious games under floodlight again. The lights at Shepherds park are only to be used for training and training games!! Even though the lights are just as good as those at North Harbour!!

How can you say the club did nothing? We werent going to play mid week games with Chatham Cup semi and Finals coming up the two or three days later! I dont really know why your are complaining it made for great drama last night and drew quite a sizable crowd!

Interesting subject. My beloved Pukekohe's original colours were black and yellow then they changed to maroon. Local rugby team colours are green and yellow, though. Odd.

Franklin Utd wear red, white and black because Counties, but you knew that :-)

Match report on Birko 3 - 2 Springs.

Good summary. Just wanted to add:

One of their penalties seemed stone-cold and the lino even flagged it. Ref ignored him and his (the ref's) head completely dropped afterwards.

Springs probably would've won if their players didn't try to score with Cristiano Ronaldo curving dipping power shots and instead just placed a ball. Same with their crosses.

Also if that was Birko's "squad" players then that have a phenominal squad.

As someone said standing near me, that call to ignore the lino and the obvious penalty call was consistent with the refs poor calling all night. Some of the sliding tackles from behind which he ignored were terrible too. As for the scoring technique, I could not agree more with you and a little composure from international age group players up front would have seen them home and dry.
