The second goal at Newtown today was a classy finish in an otherwise fairly tedious game.  Jamie O'Conner selling the Naki's keeper a massive side foot dummy before rounding him and slotting.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Crucial Win for Rangers
FRED WOODCOCK - The Dominion Post | Monday, 23 June 2008

Miramar Rangers took a significant step toward claiming their second Central League football title in three years with a comprehensive away win against fellow contenders Napier City Rovers on Saturday.

Dominic Rowe, Tommy Smith, Peter Halstead and Jeremy Brockie shared the spoils in a 4-0 win for Graham Little's side, which retains a one-point lead with a game in hand over second-placed Petone, who also notched a 4-0 win, against Stop Out.

Defending champions Western Suburbs sneaked into third spot with a 5-1 win against Wellington United, with Rupert Ryan scoring a double, while a brace of goals for Sam Blackburn wasn't enough to stop Lower Hutt City getting tipped over by visiting Palmerston North Marist, who scored an upset 3-2 win.

In yesterday's match, fourth-placed Olympic stayed in the title race with a 2-0 win against Team Taranaki.

In the women's league, Miramar beat Lower Hutt 1-0, Marist thrashed Massey University 8-0, and Seatoun and Upper Hutt drew 2-2.

Weakened Taranaki team loses
By TONY BIRD tony.bird@tnl.co.nz - Taranaki Daily News | Monday, 23 June 2008
Team Taranaki's topsy turvy season in the Central League football competition continued with a 2-0 loss to Wellington side Olympic in the capital yesterday.

A below strength Taranaki held Olympic 0-0 at halftime. But it was a lethargic Taranaki that ran back on the field to start the second half, and Olympic scored the opening goal 18 minutes into the second spell.

The home side then frequently opened up the Taranaki defence, with some silky passing creating numerous opportunities, but it failed to capitalise.

"Olympic created no fewer than six more chances, plus three one-on-ones, which they didn't take," Taranaki head coach James Graham said.

"So we were still in the game and we had one or two good opportunities ourselves to equalise, but didn't take them."

Taranaki's chances suffered a blow when, with 14 minutes left on the clock, Karl Dolan picked up his second yellow card, leaving Taranaki down to 10 men for the remainder of the match.

Olympic sealed the win with a second goal 10 minutes from fulltime.

Not making the trip south because of work commitments were striker Matt Kelbrick and midfielder John Sigurdsson. Graham wasn't using that as an excuse, saying the team he sent was still good enough to do the job. "It's disappointing. We just never really fired in the second half."

Taranaki has won two games and drawn one but, despite the promising early season run, could now be lacking match fitness.

Graham said the stop-start nature of the competition was disruptive.

"You do lose that little bit of sharpness by not playing week in, week out."

Its Central League campaign is set for a further reshuffle, with its scheduled game against leader Miramar Rangers in Wellington this weekend put back a week because Rangers have a Chatham Cup elimination match.

Goals Galore and an Upset
Posted on Monday 23rd June 2008

Park Life is the Fever's nervous, groping, teenage son: not quite sure what we're doing but having a huge amount of fun fooling around anyway. Today we review a weekend that would have had even the most retarded youngster clapping his hands.

Pope's Own Make Yellow and Greens Pay As Patterson Nestles In Net

Park Life's dutiful, and on the money, correspondent originally picked this as a 3-1 win to Marist. Park Life's more conservative editor-in-chief changed that pick to 2-1. In the end though it didn't matter, neither of us were right. The Pope's Own got off the bus into making short work of Lower Hutt on a clear day on a fair deck at Bell.

5 minutes in captain fantastic Patterson got in a nasty tangle with the net and had to come to the sideline for treatment to his hand where he had ripped the webbing between his index and middle fingers. This was only the beginning of his pain though as the Pope's Own knocked in two in 5 minutes with el capitan off the field.

While they took full advantage of Patterson's absence Marist were good for their lead as they dominated the first half. Adam Cowan the stand out, popping up all over the field both on attack and defence.

Marist's fantastic 3rd came just before half time when Gustavo Saralegui skipped along the defence on the edge of the box then blasting the ball off Cowan's head in a lovely one-two before rifling home the volley.

Lower Hutt were perhaps suffering from the mistake of changing a winning team but an injection of ginger from the bench brought them back to life. Sam Blackburn was an instant hit with boots and hair alike. He gathered the ball on half way and set his sight on goal, beating four players with pace and skill he then slotted it under a helpless Andrew Bailey.

The tide had changed and it was that ginger again causing trouble when he slipped, speedy-gonzales styles, in behind Marist's back four. Marist defender Dave McCorkindale clipped him from behind and from the resulting free kick Ginger Ronaldo, the red boy wonder, mish*t a shot from 25 that trickled past a confused Bailey.

Bailey made up for that shocker though with a fantastic reflex save in the last two minutes tipping a goal-bound Antonio Banderas header over the bar.

Despite a red-led comeback from Hutt in the second half the Pope's Own men thoroughly deserved this result. Cowan clearly a cut above the rest. Lower Hutt's Sam Blackburn was their stand out of the day, changing the game around in his 37 minute appearance.

Park Life happy to have sort of picked the result and happy to have enjoyed a fantastic mince and cheese pie for his travels.

The Bubbles Glide Past The Naki

With an earlier than normal kick off time this man in the stand was caught off guard and missed the first eight minutes. Sounds like he didn't miss much though

Team Taranaki's strategy seemed to be to niggle the Bubbles to death and a referee in love with his own whistle made that a reasonable strategy. As a result this was a very stop-start affair.

This hurt the Greeks the most, breaking up the flow of the game and helping the Naki to retain more possession than they otherwise might have. The Naki looked good with the ball but never really fashioned any clear cut chances.
What ever was said at the break worked as a much improved Olympic came out in the second spell. Moving the ball wide instead of running it down the middle and having a go at the Naki defence through Beatlejuice's Own PJ Lupi and Establishment's Own Jimmy the Mouth. Lupi in particular was regularly causing problems for the Taranaki defence, getting around players with his deceptive pace and sharp footwork. 65 minutes in and it was that man Beatlejuice who picked out Adam Church, the new centre forward showing good composure to have a touch and roof it home from 15 yards.

The Bubbles then had 3 good chances with Thomas Kelly, Churchy and Jimmy the Mouth all getting into 1 on 1 situations but going for glory instead of touching it past the fully committed Naki keeper. No glory for any of them but, just a bollocking from Peter Halikias in the stand.

Jamie O'Connor put the result beyond doubt with 5 minutes to go, winning the ball in midfield before beating the Naki centre back and setting up a 1on 1 with the keeper (Thomas Kelly, Churchy and Jimmy take note). O'Connor calmly slotted after selling the diving keeper a superb dummy and tapping in from five yards in for well taken second.

The Mar Too Good For Napier Despite Horse

Miramar Rangers cemented their league lead at Park Island on Saturday, downing a lacklustre Rovers side 4-0.

The first half was reasonably even with a real lack of quality on a massive but disappointingly poor Park Island that needed mowing.

Chances fell to both teams with Pete Halstead and Gerard Brown missing clear cut opportunities. Jacob Spoonley also had work to do and kept Miramar in it at nil all with a couple of fine saves and great work in the air.

The Horse Messam was Napier's clear target man with them looking to play through him at every opportunity but it was Graham Fyfe who provided their main threat, getting in amongst all of their successful attacking moves.

Finally Halstead stopped playing like a muppet for two seconds and latched onto a Gerard Brown wide free kick at the near post to bang in a header. 1-nil to Rangers just before the break.

Second half started with a few chances to Napier especially from corners but some top quality defending from Rangers' back four including a shot cleared off the line by Michael Woodside and keeper kept them at bay.

Miramar from then on started pushing again with Jeremy Brockie finally kicking into gear and running at Napier's back four. He created a few chances before finally scoring one. It was half saved but just rolled over the line before being hoofed out by a defender. Nobody knew what had happened until the linesman put up his flag to signal a goal. Rangers ran around like mentals. Rovers ran around spewing.

Rangers still had to deal with direct football from Napier but nothing much happened. That was until someone shinned the ball into the corner for Messam who was mysteriously onside.

He took the ball in his stride to put himself into a one on one with Yellow Fever's Own Jacob Spoonley but someone in the bushes snipered him in the ankle and he went flying, leaving the ball behind..

Rangers scored a third when super-sub Tommy Smith followed up a parry from the keeper and slotted in from a tight angle. Napier just about chucked it in at that late stage of the game and Miramar started keeping the ball for longer periods. They scored a fourth and final when Gerard Brown was having a laugh from thirty yards and smashed one that was going wide until, somehow, Dom Rowe leapt up out of the grass from nowhere and flicked the shot on target with his head to tuck it into the corner of the net.

So that was how it finished, no great quality unfortunately but a good business-like performance from Rangers in the second half was enough to embarrass the home team in the end.

French Flair Too Little Too Late For Frustrated United Fans

Mystery Frenchie Le Hugo again provided the spark in a lacklustre Oranje team at Endeavour Park but this time his clever French-ness wasn't enough to overcome a Western Suburbs side who have finally found their stride.

For the eight hundredth weekend in a row Wests rolled out a surprise player and this time it was Kieran Purcell back on holiday from his American university who made a substitute's appearance at left back.

For those who haven't been counting Kieran is the ninety third player to make an appearance for Wests' first team this season.

But it was a couple of their tried and true who delivered the killer blows to United. Old Warhorse Rupert Ryan scored a double, Mike Wilson popped up to score a cracker late on, and in between more recent additions Roddy Brown and Shaun Van Rooyen put their names on the scoresheet to make sure that Hugo Perignotto's late, and tricky, goal was meaningless in a 5-1 defeat.

Wests climb up to third in Big Travel League, one point ahead of Olympic who still have a game in hand.

United meanwhile hold on to a deceptive 6th spot ahead of Lower Hutt by a point and Marist and the Naki by two points but those teams have two games (Hutt) or a game (the other two) in hand over United who are more realistically second bottom but still 9 points clear of league anchor's Stop Out.

Petone Stay Second as Watson Sees Red

Stop Out is a club rich in tradition. The most recent of those traditions is the rule that you must get sent off in the first half of your first game for the club when you sign mid season on a cash deal.

$tevie G did it when he got sent off after 25 minutes for a second yellow against Wests. Trent Watson took that one step further again Petone when he saw a straight red inside his first half hour with the club.

His sending off effectively put an end to what had, up until then, been quite an even contest. What Watson will be left to ponder is that a draw against Petone might well have set Stop Out on their way to catching Wellington United.

His inevitable suspension will mean that he has to wait a week for his chance to make it up to the club. That week off won't help his team mates however who have to tackle fourth placed Olympic this weekend. It's a game in which someone like Watson would have been invaluable.

Petone on the other hand will be pleased to have dispatched Stop Out so comfortably in the end. These 'automatic 3 point' games often turn into banana skins for sides near the top of the table and others in the top four have found Stop Out a much harder proposition.

Whitmarsh, Winkworth (2) and McLay were the Petone scorers.

And in other events of the weekend

Waterside Karori's Capital Premier game against Lower Hutt had to be abandoned after referees declared Karori Park's multi-million dollar beach unplayable. Despite the efforts of Karori coach Shaun Gill who, with help from players, tried to roll the pitch with the cricket scoreboard, referees deemed the massive sand dunes that the council had put in place far too much of a hazard to play football on.

Word from inside Capital Football Towers is that Wharfies remaining Capital Premier games will be played at Wilton.

What a joke.

And that's it from this week's surprisingly on time Park Life.

Keep an eye out later this week when Park Life will preview another exciting round of Big Travel League provided Real Job and Upcoming Holiday don't get in the way!

Until then.

Marist missing a back-up goalkeeper

By TONY COFFIN - Manawatu Standard | Monday, 23 June 2008

Marist coach Steve Green is in search of a goalkeeper for next Saturday's important home game against Petone.

Marist moved seven points ahead of bottom-placed Stop Out when it secured a good win over one of the competition's top sides, Lower Hutt City, 3-2, at Bell Park in Lower Hutt on Saturday.

If there is one player Green can't do without at the moment its goal-keeper Andrew Bailey, while Adam Cowan will also be missing.

"I'll be ringing around this week to see if anyone in any club is available. Our second-team keeper is injured and our reserve keeper has been out injured since the second round - it's a bit of a worry for us."

Finally Marist won a game it dominated with three first-half goals. It almost allowed Lower Hutt back into the game, conceding two goals in the second spell to Sam Blackburn, while Bailey pulled off a stunning save in the final minute.

"We played really well in the first half to put ourselves in position for the three points, but as I said afterwards it was only one win and we still need to get a couple more," Green said. "It's crucial for soccer in the Manawatu that we have a competitive side in the Central League and I'll be looking to strengthen the team next season."

Marist made its best start of the season with two stunning goals inside the first 10 minutes with Uruguayan Gustavo Sarelegui setting up the first for Scott Robson, then scoring himself shortly after.

Unfortunately for Lower Hutt, both Marist goals came with a Lower Hutt player off the field receiving treatment, something Green wasn't aware of until told after the game.

In a rare start midfielder Daniel Aliaga was outstanding alongside Cowan in the centre of the park, with Aliaga thumping home a third goal before the break.

Green was forced to make the changes when captain Josh smith was forced out during the week with an ongoing shoulder problem.

Green also made other changes, including playing usual fullback Robson on the wing and moving midfielder Dave McCorkindale into the defence to mark livewire Wellington striker Luis Corales. Although lacking the pace of Corales, McCorkindale got in his face all day and allowed Corales no room to weave his magic.

Thought of asking Barry Pickering to come out of retirement?

I'm sure he would relish the opportunity to play against the young fella.

A lot of byes this week, with the Cup on and with Mar continuing the run in the cup, this could delay the crowing of this years champ until the end of the season.  It enables a few teams to move up the ladder...

So, how do games in hand really equate to points on the table??  I think it is not an equal situation, but how imbalanced is it?

Look what happened to Rangers Celtic this year.  Beginning of April Rangers were three points ahead of Celtic with 3 games in hand. Celtic won thier remaining 6 games and Rangers who had 9 games remaining only got 9 points out of 27. Celtic ends up winning the league by 3 points..

The season looked over for Celtic but a strong run and putting the points on the board and Rangers started to choke..

Here Comes the Weekend

Park Life is the Fever's finger on the powerful pulse of domestic footy. Today, despite the tyranny of distance caused by Park Life going on Overseas Holiday to escape Real Job, we bring you a preview of Big Travel League and, more excitingly, Big Cup!

Brockie-less Mar Host Lower Hutt Centennial Park. Saturday. 2pm.

Lower Hutt's Big Travel League form as been inconsistent at best of late, having been pooned at home 3-2 by Marist last weekend. Their cup form has been good though and this weekend they are going to upset Miramar's massive apple cart in a big way.

Lower hutt have been bringing some of the younger players through in the last few weeks and have had to push Phil Patterson into the defensive midfield role due to injuries to Wayne Rooker and Antonio Banderas.

Despite the beginnings of an exodus at Bell Park Lower Hutt's squad is reportedly felling good for this one offering, as it does, the chance to prove they are good enough to compete with League high flyers Mar.

The Mar have been scoring goals for fun this season and punishing sides both home and away. Things look great to those who are looking but this weekend they'll have to do without their Under 23 players who have been bansticked from playing by Super Stu ahead of next week's games against Chile.

With the loss of their big money signings this week and the news that 2nd choice keeper Dylan Hall has had to have another scan on his wrist things could be a little unsettled for the Mar on Saturday.

A Hutt side looking to take out their poor League form frustrations on them could present a major challenge.

Make your way down to a freezing cold and windswept Centennial Park to watch Miramar lose 2-0 to McIntyre's men in a major upset.

Wilson Suburbs Travel Away in Unexpected Cup Draw to Olympic Newtown Park. Sunday. 2pm.

Wilson Suburbs will be scratching their heads as to how unlucky they were to be drawn away from home this round.

Coach Calcott was seen scouting at Newtown Park last Sunday and he'll will have his work cut out for him to get Suburbs' second team ready before Sunday. With the loss of several players involved with the Oly Whites he will need to reshuffle some key positions.

The good news for Calcott is that Mike Wilson is still available. So it Rupert Ryan. So is Roddy Brown. So is Phil Imraaaaaay. Sam Peters will return to right back and that will ensure some massive bobsleds on a greasy wet Newtown Park surface.

Olympic are chomping at the bit for this game. They trained early on Thursday morning at the hockey stadium in fear that they might have their ground closed that night. They welcome back midfield pairing Simon George and Raf. They are also known to be the biggest haters of Wests in the universe. Expect return bobsleds from Olympic hardman Barry "The Lunatic" Lewis.

This promises to be a huge game with the real possibility of lots of goals and even more cards. Look out for the midfield battle between Ginger Roddy Brown and Best and Fairest Raf.

We fancy upsets this weekend so have a look for Olympic to overturn an Olympian-less Wilson United 3 -2!

And then there's the Big Travel League

If you're an out of towner you could go and see the two Big Travel League fixtures that are to be played this weekend.

Stop Out will get an absolute hammering away at Napier and Petone will take points on the road against Marist. If Adam Cowan isn't bored Petone will only bring home a point but if Cowan fancy's a quiet day then Mike Pickering will score a brace and Petone will return top of the league! For a bit anyway.

And in other news...

Park Life is on Overseas Holiday from Real Job so this is officially Shortest Park Life Ever.

Olympic players become unavailable on July 10th. That could change things!

Speaking of the Olympics. The U23s will play Chile next week. Maybe twice. Details to come!

And that's all for now!

Wairarapa United are still hopeful of drawing a good-sized crowd to their vital Capital Soccer premier division match with Miramar Rangers at the Pugh Sports Bowl tomorrow.

The rule of thumb for Wairarapa United's home games this season has been to play them on Sundays so as to enable the wider soccer community to watch the action but tomorrow's game is a very different kettle of fish with normal club matches being played around the same time.

Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley is optimistic, however, that with his team sitting second on the premier division points table, just one point behind Island Bay United and with a game in hand, the local sporting fraternity not just soccer will choose them as the best viewing option.

"We'd like to think we have done enough to keep people interested," he said. "We certainly don't under-estimate the importance of having a vocal crowd behind us, it can make all the difference in a close game."

The last time Wairarapa United and Miramar Rangers met the locals won comfortably enough but Keinzley says Miramar Rangers have improved "a ton" since then and consequently a much closer contest was being anticipated on this occasion.

"They have had a good run of form and are the sort of team who tends to rise to the big occasion," Keinzley said of Miramar Rangers. "They would love to knock us off, no question of that."

To prevent that happening Keinzley believes Wairarapa United will have to show the same resolve as they did in their 1-0 victory over Tawa last weekend. That game was played under ground conditions more akin to a ploughed paddock than a soccer pitch and they turned the match into a battle of attrition, a situation with which Wairarapa United coped better than their opposition.

The expectation that Miramar Rangers will place the emphasise on an attacking style of play has prompted Keinzley to bring the hard-nosed Guiseppe Cagliari off the reserve bench and into the midfield.

He is one of the team's most assertive defenders and will be given the job of marking of marking Miramar Rangers's danger man Tim Butterfield, something Cagliari has handled with distinction in the past.

Worth noting here is that if Wairarapa United win the premier division title it does guarantee them entry into next season's central league competition.

For that to happen they would then have to beat the top central region premier division side (Gisborne, Hawke's Bay, Manawatu and Taranaki) to earn the right to play the bottom central league team in a promotion-relegation fixture.
