I believe that there used to be a thread for/about ref's, but looking at the last couple of pages in the TW thread I saw these comments...

Minuses- the ref was an absolute cock. Got some things right but the major things he screwed up.The  4th official spoke to Stu several times about what he was saying .But this was an important game , and I think the players deserved someone in charge who wasn't an absolute muppett.I've noticed this all year- a very average standard generally.Last week I also had a go at the reffing- today was much worse.

This is fact.  Referee woeful.

[QUOTE=Felini]

Why is it that every week we get a different Ref and a different set of interpretations. The Ref today was crap, for both teams. Auckland did better today because they milked him alll game, TW has too many stupid players who didn't get the messag.
Auckland could do no wrong today almost like the ref and lino's has a bet on.

that is 4 comments c**ting off a ref in the the last 11 posts, and the majority of the other posts were about how Gilly makes some kid carry all his heavy equipment.

I have also noticed that when I play recently there seems to be more players abusing the ref's decisions - things like centre backs on the half way line complaining about offside decisions that happen at the other end of the pitch, when I am standing next to them and have no idea if it was offside or not.  I am not sure if there is more of it, or if I am getting less tolerant of mindless criticism as I get older.

It is like people generally believe that some bloke who has given up his Saturday to allow 22 unfit, uncoordinated halfwits in 2 degree weather to have an actual game really wants one team to win more than the other.  It is ludicrous.

We need referees - that is a fact.  I am not sure about NZ but there is a real problem with recruiting refs here in the UK as they are sick of being physically and verbally abused for just just doing their bit to get games going.  We need to appreciate them more, so I am suggesting that this is where we are nice to refs and make them feel wanted.

Refs - I love you.

Note - I am on my period at the moment so this is why I seem more emotional than usual.

Did the basic refs course for Junior football tonight.  Well over 40 people there.

I suppose I will have to get fit now to keep up with the 11 yos this season.  Unfortunately I won't be able to yellow or red card them, but I will get a loud whistle.

Looking forward to unleashing my inner muppetry and being a c*ck for 50 minutes each saturday.

This part there is what irritates me - We play football people, not Egg Ball or 5 days of boredom(cricket). Footballs rules are loose and fast, is the player offside when the ball is PLAYED. How hard it is to see that for one ref, let alone refs with linos. Ball to hand, or hand to ball. ALL refs interpret the rules with their own personal opinion. You just have to get on play it. How would a striker feel after missing a sitter from 2 yards feel if the ref told him he was an incompetent muppet  who couldn't score in a whore house.

I'm with you Frankie - We love you refs we do, we love you refs we do, we love you refs we do. Ohhhhh refs we love you!

At a preseason match in CHCH last week there was that awkward pause when both the referee and lino didn't know who kicked the ball out. After a few seconds the ref chose the defending team to have the ball and clearly explained "new rule guys: if we are unsure then it goes to the defending team"

Strangely, I don't remember feeling all this love when I was refereeing down there in Wellington. Funny that.

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Watching a preseason game on Sunday.
Some 4th division prat goes off his nut because he looses the ball. Starts yelling that one of his team mates wasnt making a run. It was only about 20 minutes into the game.
Trouble is Football is full of pratts like this.

So what, a few people make a few comments about refs - big deal. Its not like we're seeing 3000 comments a week from a number of people across every single game on any given week in wellington.

Some refs DO make absolute sh*t decisions - fact. Dont get me wrong, I appreciate refs as well and will approach the ref after every game, shake his/her hand and thank them, maybe have a wee chat etc... Id never play in a grade without a proper ref.

But its only the minority of refs who f**k up resulting in a minority of forum comments. Live with it.

So, so wrong.

Have you ever tried to ref?  I once did the line for a half of a Miramar vs Olympic pre-season game at DF Park (standard pre-season affair - Barry Lewis had to get subbed on the request of the ref to stop him being sent off).  It was f**king horrible.  There was a 50/50 by the touchline right in front of me and the ball went out.  I genuinely had no idea who touched it last so gave it to Miramar and had to spend the next 5 minutes getting abuse and fish and chips thrown down on me by all the old bubbles behind me.

It made me think of how tough it would be to deal with that sh*t for 90 minutes, with the abuse quite often coming from pub players without an ounce of coordination.

This website is all about supporting the Phoenix and football in NZ so c**ting off refs should not be allowed.  In no way does it support NZ football.  If in that TW thread that the comments were taken from in the original post had been about a TW player, the majority on here would not accept it.  Lets look at a different scenario.....

Team Wellington number 12 has a pretty good game, but at one stage should have passed the ball to put a team mate through but didn't do it.  Apart from that he played pretty well.  If someone came on here afterwards and posted about how he is a sh*t player who fcuks everything up and ruined the game (not for the first time), the general response would be that he is a better player than the poster, and deserves more credit than that.  Yet if a ref makes one key mistake but is generally good they are an easy target.  They are far better refs than all the people c**ting them off, but that means nothing.

It is the start of the season in NZ and so it is time to start my referee love.  Everytime you play a game, at the end of it think about how many mistakes you made compared to the ref.  And then give the ref a hug.  Everyone on here like AJ13 who thinks they are a bit of a player and the refs are lucky to get the opportunity to see them play should try to ref a games themselves to help them get a bit of perspective.  And then hug themselves.  At the end of every game that people play, don't just go and shake the refs hand (despite this being a completely empty gesture, it is somehow accepted as a suitable way of thanking them) actually go and speak to the ref.  Take the time to tell them how you appreciate them giving up their time so you could play.  And then hug them.

The crusade to get referees some recognition and appreciation starts here.

what the f**k are you on about?

1. you said you once did the line, which would indicate youre not a ref, have no experience, and probably arent very good.

2. it was mar vs. oly,  usually going to be a bit of tension whenever these two play, so probably not the best example to use

3. when did i ever spout off about how awesome i am? i said i appreciate refs. if you cant show me a comment where i slagged off a ref i suggest that you c**t off.

4. that hat makes you look like a pedo

hmmmmm

1. I said I once did the line, and it was very difficult.  I never claimed to be a ref, just stating what a thankless and difficult task it was and how it gave me an appreciation of what they do.    I am not a ref as the job is too hard, which is why I created a thread suggesting that we appreciate them more.  If I was a ref it would be like a Turkey creating a thread suggesting we do away with Thanksgiving.

2.  Doesn't mean that reffing or running the line in any other game is any easier.

3. but I can show you a comment where you slagged off a ref [QUOTE=AJ13]So what, a few people make a few comments about refs - big deal.  Some refs DO make absolute sh*t decisions - fact
  Hardly a massive compliment.

So what are you saying, theres never been a ref whos made a stupid mistake? I wasnt complimenting or taking anything away from any ref with that comment, i was simply stating a fact. People make mistakes. And people get upset about mistakes. Some people yell at refs like bosses yell at staff or whatever. I suggest you get over it. Do i swear and carry on as a player or a spectator? No.

As amusing as this argument is surely Frankie you have to acknowledge that these Forum isnt about rules or censorship. People can say what they like about refs so long as its not deemed offensive or over the top. Im not a fan of ref bashing but I am a fan of our right to complain about refs in the forum. Something along the lines of freedom of speech.
So yup hug away by all means, just don't scare the refs away . As for not allowing certain forum topics... Jog on.

I don't think I said that people can't c**t off refs - I think I was just suggesting that they shouldn't.  I don't think we need to start debating the merits of freedom of speech in fear that it will progress onto the right to bear arms (which would not be good for refs).

exactly.  I am getting sick of premier league managers, players and supporters blaming results on referees due to one decision, instead of the teams performance.  Surely the wingers inability to get one cross in out of the 20 odd times he got the ball in good positions had as much (if not more) influence on the game than 1 decision from the referee.

Take today, for instance.  I am sure that Steve Bruce had plenty to say about the decision to award a penalty to Liverpool, which was a contentious decision, but nothing about the mistake by Mensah which created the situation.  I understand a manager trying to deflect blame away from the team, but it just cannot always be onto the refs (and lines-people).
