User Cost of Artificials

Alright, it looks like the Morrison proposal will involve a mixture of private/trust funding, Council funding and user charges. The break down is not yet clear. We will post when available, but it looks like the Council will contribute 1/3 of the funding and a mix of private/user charges will cover 2/3 (based on the Dom Post story this morning - http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/local/4144150/1m-sportsfield-package-funds)

It would be useful to know what kind of contribution users make towards the costs of other public facilities (swimming pools, libraries etc) and whether they contribute to capital costs. But for now, probably just helpful to get a sense from people whether the proposal that teams contribute $50 per game is reasonable. We will probably get a chance to provide some feedback on the proposal.

$50 per team is reasonable. Team of 16 works out to be around $3 each. There will no doubt be substitutes who have a wah about paying without playing, but overall it is an acceptable cost, especially considering that some players get paid $50 or more a week to play for their club anyway.DKP222010-09-20 09:32:11

it will be interesting how clubs deal with it and whether built into overall club subs -based on some estimate of the no of games the club will play on turf each year. I cant imagine it will work trying to collect $3 of everybody before kick off.

You are right, will just be included as a subs increase. So Island Bay United will play all of their home games on the artificial if the proposed goes ahead?

Another option would be to involve Capital Football. they could collect additional $ from clubs on some averaged or weighted basis (with Wellington clubs and clubs most likely to use most often paying most)

Actually, that will be Olympic as it is our designated home ground....
Look I am sure that IBU and BNU will have games on that...lets hope that the council do get their act together and "get sign off" ....
Was wondering if they end up puting lights as well ....for late games etc....

I think impt the comment Ken put in other thread ...

"the survey done by CF 3 years ago had a question in it along the lines of 'would you pay more to play on an artificial if it guaranteed you a game', to which the answer was a resounding yes."

From a club administrators point of view I can see this turning out badly. Maybe morrison can explain how the cost of capital football games will be met.

Which pitch is number two by the way?

The pitch next to the number 1 on the clubroom level.

You could have 4 senior games on a Saturday right through to 9pm - 3 maybe 4 different clubs hosting them. The real financial winners would be IB through the extra bar revenue. Now there's a complicated issue.

How much is Capital Football charged now for the use of grass pitches?

A dog with a bone :)

Permalink Permalink

any additional cost should be spread across all players as the artificial pitches help protect the grass fields meaning anyone who gets to play on any given weekend, be it on grass or turf, gets the benefit.

so this take out some crickets wickets then? How will it go on Saturdays in summer with cricket balls being smashed at it?

Levying every club in Wellington region to pay for the capital cost and then a further levy to pay for the operating cost! Sounds like another no-brainer approach. Will voters be that naive to vote Morrison in on this proposal alone to combat winter cancellations for soccer?

To curb demand, price can be increased and this will also bing in heaps of bucks to WCC.

Sports people demand turfs, turfs are expensive to build and a return will be be needed. Football mums and dads realise how important for their kids to follow their draema, so they WILL just dig even deeper and pay $100 per hour, then rachet up to $120 per hou as askedr!!!

This way, WCC can even make profit out of heaps of cancellations due to weather.

Good business model and soon sports players will be happy and WCC will be even happier! If it works like this, it shows how naive and gullible sports players really are.

Slightly off topic: How much does it cost to build an artificial turf?

About half the insurance pay-out on a quake damaged gym .

Approx $1.2 Million.

and lasts for 10-12 years.

If the figures of 20-25 hours per week of use are feasible at $60 per hour that will come to $1500 per week revenue so the council are not going to get rich there.

Artificial field turf requires less frequent care than natural grass, but is by no means maintenance free. Synthetic grass maintenance schedules include:

  • Raking (combing)
  • Deep-tining
  • Vacuuming
  • Leaf-blowing
  • Hand-picking
  • Wetting
  • Washing
  • Sanitizing
  • Treating for weeds and pests
So after all this is done there will still be the cost of ?? to replace it when it's worn out, maintenence, and from revenue of about $1,000,000 over 12 years

Hot of the press....
"Have just received confirmation that WCC have approved the go ahead for 2 artificials at Wakefield Park

The IBUAFC contribution will be called upon, and a letter from WCC will be coming in the next few days."

No further info as to starting dates etc...However I am sure that they will be confirming this sooner rather than later.

There's work already started at Wakefield Park although at this stage they seem to be mainly digging trenches around the sides.

The digging is looking at the existing stormwater.

Last time I talked to people at Council they were talking June but at that stage they were still 50k short so things may have changed since then.
