Plate Semi Final - WM United vs Sprig & Fern FC.

An icy cold wind, a southerly squall and rain is what greeted the two teams at Boyd Wilson Field to decide who would go through to the next round of The Cup.

WM United kicked off facing the wind and this suited their short passing game through midfield. Sprig n Fern had a good half chance early on but Dougie rifled his shot over the bar.

WM United took the lead in the 5th minute. Fifi pounced on a poor pass  and after out jinking the covering defender he scored easily.

Edward doubled the lead in the 18th minute. He finished off a great move down the right at the far post. At this stage it looked like United would win easily, with Fifi a constant threat anytime the ball was in the Sprig half.

In eight minutes it was all square however. Matt got his first on the half hour mark, smashing a great opportunistic shot in at the near post. He followed that up by coolly slotting his second after a neat one-two move on the edge of the box. This goal was most Un-Stoke City like.

Halftime arrived, with the hail, with it all locked up at 2.2

Sprig n Fern went down to 10 men for the whole second half when Ashwin? didn`t reappear after injuring his wrist. This was a big loss  because he was having a good game wide on the left.

Against the wind, and with only 10 men you would have thought that WM would put them to the sword. This didn`t eventuate. United were anxious in attack, shooting wildly, and their passing game that had put them in good stead had deserted them.

Sprig n Fern on the other hand defended stoutly and made a good fist of the difficult half ahead. Their keeper made some excellent saves, and some desperate defending kept the 10 men in it.

To their credit they attacked on the counter and in the 80th minute should have taken the lead. After a defensive blunder, the energetic  Gus and Matt broke away and headed for goal. With Gus pulling away to the middle of the goal in good space Matt drew the defence, but rather than pull the ball across to unmarked  Gus, he went for hatrick glory and smashed his shot straight at WMs keeper who saved it well.

This was to prove extremelly costly for Sprig. Two minutes after, Daniel, who had been booked for foul language ten minutes earlier, put the game WM United`s way.

He was chasing a long ball, that confused the Sprig back four and was in on goal. His first chance was well blocked by Sprig`s keeper, but he got the rebound and somehow managed to squeeze the ball across the line through the covering defenders legs. Not the best goal ever to win a cup game, but win it it did.

WM United deseved to win this on chances created, but Sprig n Ferns spirit didn`t really deserve to see them on the losing side, but thats football, and thats why we love it.

Final Score WM United 3  Sprig n Fern 2

Teams: Viti Boys Wellington vs Sandbar Sharks

Venue: Boyd Wilson Park, Victoria University, Wellington

Kick Off Time: 3.30pm

Referee: Tangy

Half Time Score: 0-0 Full Time: 0-2

Yellow cards: None Red cards: None

Match Summary

Both teams steadied themselves for a knock-out match amidst gale force winds, hail and all. Both teams probed each other’s defence but Sandbar Sharks had created more opportunities in front of goal but couldn’t score. Viti Boys defended well and match was 0-0 by half time.

In second half, Sandbar Sharks came out taking advantage of the gales and played the ball wide and deep, stretching the defence of the Viti Boys. At 50th min, after a corner kick, ball was bobbing about in penaty area and it floated over the Viti Boys defensive line and a wide player from Sandbar Sharks in front of goal headed the ball into the net. Then, Viti Boys pumped ball into the gales and it was hard going forward especailly when Sandbar Sharks made it difficult for Viti Boys to pass the ball forward. But Viti Bys suddenly gained confidence and was unlucky not to score a goal or two and even got ahead. Perhaps Viti Boys pushed the defence too far forward and in a counter play, Sandbar Sharks launched ball skywards and the gales took it down the field and it bounced in front of Viti Boys’ keeper. This time, Sandbar Sharks forward didn’t make any mistake and pushed the ball into the net.

Sandbar Sharks won the knock-out match 2-0 at final whistle.

Full credit to both teams for playing the game in great spirit despite the frigid weather conditions. It was great to see the array of individual skills and team play throughout the match. An enjoyable match to officiate.

Date: 21 July 2013 (Sunday)
Grade: Div 2
Teams: Sandbar Sharks vs Sprigs n Ferns
Venue: Ole Academy
Kickoff Time: 11am
Yellow cards : None Red cards: None
Score: 3-1HT, 5-4FT

On a fairly mild sort-of-warm winter morning and a bit breezy, match kicked off at 11am.

Both teams attacked and probed each other's defences with high level of energy and urgency. On the 7th minute, a midfielder (no. 14) of Sandbar Sharks took a shot and scored teh first goal in a nice buildup. Not to the outdone, Sprig n Ferns, though only had 10 players, strung together nice teamplay and equalised on the 11th minute with a goal by no.14. No. 8 of Sandbar Sharks added two more goals on the 14th and 17th minutes. Match was a 3-1 lead to the home team, Sandbar Sharks.

There must be some good half time talks amongst Sprigs n Ferns team and players came out all fired up. With the addition of another player, Sprigs n Ferns had a full team and that would added strength to the team. Then, Sprigs n Ferns' no. 10 and 12 scored on the 48th and 51st minute, equalising with Sanbar Sharks. The Tiredness might have crept in a bit and more high and long balls were being played. Sandbar Sharks added its 4th goal on the 61st minute and nosed ahead.

A ball was played high and wide to the right forward player. No. 10 from Sprigs n Ferns crossed the ball, but somehow, probably with the help of the wind, ball ended up in the net on the 73rd minute and score was locked at 4-4.

A ball was played forward by Sandbar Sharks towards opposition's penalty area and with the forward sprinting forward chasing the ball, the keeper from Sprigs n Ferns came out. It was probably due to lacking in communication that a defender from Sprigs n Ferns collided with his keeper trying to clear the ball and if that wasn't enough, the ball fell loose and was put in the net by the forward (No. 6) from Sandbar Sharks after a quick touch! Sprigs n Ferns' keeper sustained a cut to his lower chin and was taken away for some medical attentionSprigs n Ferns was back to 10 men.

Both teams battled till the final whsitle with Sanbar Sharks winning 5-4. Both teams are looking smart and good team comunications throughout the match with little offensive languages.

Grade: Div 1
Teams: Porirua United vs Tuskan Raiders
Venue: Kura Park
Kickoff Time: 1pm
Yellow cards : Porirua Club: Matt Beaghton - 1 yellow card, usb @2.13pm
Tuskan Raiders: Jeff Miller - 1 yellow card, usb @2.13pm
Red cards: None
Score: 1-2HT, 1-4FT

Kura Park was fairly dry and bobbly after yesterday's match. Markings were invisble in most places.

Porirua team kicked off the game at 1pm. In a series of kick passing of the ball with speed and width, the ball was played to no. 13 (Captain) of Porirua team and he calmly took the ball forward, struck early and scored the first goal on the 6th minute.

This must have energised the Tuskan Raiders and after some nifty passing, ball was played into penalty area of Porirua team. A bit of overzealous attempt to challenge by a defender of Porirua team resulted in a penalty kick awarded to Tuskan Raiders. No. 12 of Tuskan Raiders made no mistake and scored on the 11th minute. The playing style of noth teams was quite different with Tuskan Raiders intending to do nice, short and quick passes whilst Porirua team would prefer longer and and higher balls. No. 7 from Tuskan Raiders added a second goal on the 17th minute, taking the game into a 2-1 lead by half time.

Players might be getting tired out running on mostly uneven surface and more careless tackles became evident with more verbal banters. Tuskan Raiders players were probably fitter and speed to burn. . Tuskan Raiders forawrd went deep into opposotion's goal area and managed to keep the ball from Porirua's keeper and kept ball in play in the goal area, after a bit of melee No. 9 of Tuskan Raiders took a shot and scored on the 58th minute.

Two players tussled with each other in an off-the-ball incident and were both cautioned for unsporting conduct on the 63rd minute.

Tuskan Raiders continued to press forward and its no. 7 added another goal on the 64th minute. Porirua team wasn't done yet and continued to counterattack. On the 88th minute of play, ball was criss-crossed by Porirua team and no. 13 of Porirua team had a break and was on his way forward. If only he had taken an earlier shot ... But ball was cleared by Tuskan Raider's keeper and a defender and match ended with a 4-1 win to Tuskan Raiders.

Both teams played well. Some players need to be more aware that offensive languages are not part of the game.

Good on ya Sandbar!

3:48pm
Hi Tony,
Was playing for Spring and Fern against Sandbar today in goal. Unfortunate collision with my own team member gave me a concussion and needing stitches.
Just wondering if you have an address or contact you could pass on so I can contact Sandbar, one of the guys watching (their injured keeper) took me to A&E and stayed with me til one of my teammates came down after the game and I just want to pass on my thanks. Can't remember his name cos I was so dazed but it was hugely appreciated!
Cheers.

Heretaunga College, with the biggest corner arcs I`ve ever seen, is where The Wallies greeted WM United.

Their greeting was probably a wee bit too friendly, gifting WM a goal after 3 minutes. Tom of Wallaceville was day dreaming and let Ivan run behind him to control a great pass from Avi, and he slotted his chance.

For the next 42 minutes there was action aplenty. For WM United Eddie can take the title for WSL Miss of the Year, when after Fifi had tormented the right side of Wallacevilles defence, including rounding Gary Stone in goal, he laid it back to Eddie, who on his preferred left foot and with a gaping goal, managed to smash his shot onto the rugby field about a kilometre away.

Aaron of Wallaceville struck an impressive free kick which beat the keeper but was cleared off the line by the covering defender, to the feet of Jayden Fabling-Stone, who somehow with no-one near him managed to miss the ball altogether when it seemed certain he would score.

The second half saw the movement and pace of WM United dominate The Wallies. In the 51st minute Fifi nonchalently got his name on the scoresheet, and from there on  the goals kept coming.

Mo got number three on the hour mark, Rajo was true to his word in saying he would be next to score, in the 67th minute, Jo finished off from close range in the 69th minute and Fifi completed the scoring in the 75th minute.

Wallaceville never stopped trying though, Steve Cochrane saved a certain goal by clearing off the line, and Gary Stone, in goal for the Wallies made a string of impressive saves.

For Wallaceville, captain, Pops, gave his normal committed performance, and  Jesse Cochrane played outstandingly, both at right back and as a late cameo as a striker.

But WM United fully deserved to win. Scott and Avi marshalled the defence expertly, under utilised Ivan hardly put a foot wrong all day, and Fifi was his normal bundle of pace and tricks.

Greg at centre midfield for WM was the Man of the Match though. He controlled the middle of the park for the whole match, won a million headers, as well as a million tackles and distributed the ball superbly. The only thing missing from his work today was a goal his performance deserved.

Final Score: Wallaceville United 0  WM United 6

Man of the Match: Greg (WM United)

Blazers and Marauders were playing at Boyd Wilson during quake. Despite the turf literally rolling and 3/4 of players running away from the shaking student apartments next door which looked destined to topple onto turf Maruaders still managed to score during quake and Pedro somehow found it in his hispanic heart to let the goal stand.

The Final Stages - FIXTURES HERE

A big weekend of important games coming up.

The run in for Division 1 has seen the early leaders Cambodia dive to 3rd place and, with 1 game to play, Tuskan Raiders and Marauders have only 1 goal between them after Marauders beat Blazers 9-3 to close the gap.

This weekend Cambodia have already defaulted but the rest of the games have all got some significance to the outcome of the League.

Viti United play Marauders and would move up to 3rd with a win and extinguish Marauders chances of the league title. Marauders though, need a big win and hope that Shamrocks can put in a good performance against Raiders to keep the score down, or win and they ( Marauders) will take the title on GD.

In the relegation zone it's a battle between Porirua and Shamrocks. Both teams will be in the relegation playoffs but with only a point between them a good result for either could change there opposition from Div 2.

In Div 2 there are 2 games to play with Lazy 11 the likely winners leading by 3 points with a game in hand.

The race is still on for the final promo spot between WM United and Sandbar Sharks. Sprig n Fern missed their opportunity to be up there this weekend with a late 4-5 loss to Sandbar, the score locked at 4-4 with 15 to go.

WM United have a tough run in with games against the Sprigs and Lazy 11. If the Sprigs take any points off WM this weekend it'll open the door for Sandbar Sharks to take the last promo spot and finish second in the league. Sandbar's final 2 games are against Wallaceville and Trentham. Both teams have improved during the season and could upset the Sharks promo hopes.

The Cup and Plate Finalists have been decided and a venue will be announced shortly for the games to be played on the 11th of August. Cambodia and Tuskan will meet in the Cup Final and WM United play Sandbar Sharks for the Plate. It is likely that the promo game between Lazy 11 and either Porirua or Shamrocks will be played on the same day.

Stay Tuned and good luck!

Trentham United vs Sandbar Sharks.

A beautiful sunny Upper Hutt day, with not a breath of wind is the difficult conditions that Trentham United and Sandbar Sharks had to deal with today.

For Trentham United, today was about putting in a good performance to try pass their local rivals Wallaceville United and get off the bottom of the table, whereas Sandbar were looking to keep their promotion aspirations alive, while creating a winning culture as they head towards The Plate final in August.

Both sides put out strong sides and the whole match was pretty even with both teams having periods of pressure on the other.

It was in the 9th minute that pressure created the first goal. A weak backpass had Fitzy scrambling out of the Trentham goal and his clearance crashed into Teo of Sandbar. Keith of Trentham attempted to then head the ball back to Fitzy but instead found Teo, who with his back to goal, swivelled and hit a great right foot volley into the empty goal.

Teo had a glorious chance to double the lead ten minutes later but screwed his shot wide with only the keeper to beat.

Trentham were not sitting back and Keith`s forays from the back were creating havoc, as were a string of Batesy`s corners which were well handled by Mark in Sharks goal.

Just prior to half time Mark Hurley joined the fray for Trentham and what a difference he would make to the game.

While Stokesy of Sandbar was doing a wee trick every time he got the ball, inevitably slowing Sandbars attack, Hurley was more direct and energetic and gave Trentham a new force in attack.

His chase of a lost cause down the right proved worthy, as he pounced on slow defending and attacked the Sandbar defence. As the normally calm defence of Colin and Hugo tried to close the rampaging Hurley down, his well timed cross was put away by Batesy ghosting in at the far post.

Sandbar`s defence knew now that any mistake, or dithering could prove costly. Sandbar continued to push forward but the number of times that Teo, Rodney and Stokesy all hesitated to shoot when clear was baffling.

Teo created a great opportunity pulling the ball back to a completely unmarked Stokesy  just out of the six yard box, but Stokesy smashed the ball into The Royal Wellington Golf Course.

Five minutes later, Hurley was at his menancing best again. He chased a through ball and just like Sandbar`s goal, the clearance was smashed into him. The deflection fall kindly to Hurley who, even though was on the ground, managed to hook the ball into the goal.

Sandbar looked a bit deflated after the goal but with 20mins left still had plenty of time to equalise. Teo, Rodney and Sam all worked tirelessly for the cause but came up empty handed.

Trentham defended staunchly, and with Mark Hurley chasing anything cleared upfield and pressuring any Sandbar player within ten metres they hung on for the win.

Sandbar had enough chances and territory to win this match and will need to be a lot more clinical if they are to get promotion and win The Plate.

Trentham should be pleased with their team effort. Keith and Tom performed well in a number of roles, Ren ran his heart out and Darren was strong all game.

The differnce though was Hurley. His enthusiasm was undoubtly the difference and deservedly was Man of the Match.

Final Score: Trentham United 2  Sandbar Sharks 1

Man of the Match:  Mark Hurley (Trentham United)

The Wellington Sunday Football league arrived at it's dramatic conclusion today with both divisions completing their final rounds. Division One almost finished last week but halfway through the crucial Tuskan v Shamrocks game half the lights at Boyd Wilson didn't make it and the game was abandoned due to the poor light. This game was replayed today with Tuskan needing a 6 goal advantage to beat the new league leaders, Marauders, and take the title on goal difference.

The score was Tuskan's 2-0 at the conclusion of the abandoned game and Shamrock's were confident they could spoil Tuskan's day today with some lively banter during the week.

So at 12pm today the game kicked off again only for Raiders to fall short winning the game 5-2 and allowing Marauders the League title.

Div.2 had a full round of games to finish off and the runners up/promo spot was still attainable by 3 teams should results go the right way. WM United needed a win over the already Champs, Lazy 11, to secure that spot. Should WM slip up Sandbar Sharks and Sprig n Fern would be waiting to take their place.
Sandbar kicked things off with a 9-2 win over Wallaceville and temporarily moved into 2nd spot. Sprigs and Trentham didn't send their result in so I can only imagine a lot of injury time and they're still playing or they're not bovvered.

It didn't matter anyway as WM pulled out their top 11 today and beat Lazy 11 3-0.

All that's left to play now are the Cup Final (Cambodia vs Tuskan Raiders) and Plate finals (WM United vs Sandbar Sharks) which are coming up this Sunday 11th at a venue TBA and the weekend following the Promo games between Lazy 11 v Shamrocks and Porirua and WM United.

Plate Final - WM United vs Sandbar Sharks

A typical grey drizzly day on a grass, yes grass, pitch is what the two teams had to deal if they were to come out Plate Winners 2013.

The first half flew by with the game mainly a midfield battle with the short passing game of WM United trying to break down the industrious defence of Sandbar.

Having said that, Ben Sigmund look- a- like Mark nearly put Sandbar ahead after two minutes. A near post cross from Rodney was not dealt with by WM`s defence and as it ricocheted to Mark he  snatched his volley and put it over the bar from inside the 6 yard box.

The second half started off with way more intensity than the first and suddenly clear cut chances were being created.

Sandbar can thank their goalkeeper Si for keeping them in the game. His bravery, ability and guile thwarted Dave three times, Joe and Fefa in one on one situations.

Simmsy, who had recovered from an unfortunate head clash in the first half, was doing his upmost best to keep pushing Sandbar forward, and this along with Rich making some great late runs created some good strikes without reward.

United always looked slightly more dangerous with their passing through midfield, where Craig was instrumental in keeping the pressure on Sandbars defence.

To their credit, Hugh and Shane were rocks at the back and so we went 90 minutes without a goal.

It took four minutes of extra time for the break through to come. Craig played a marvellous ball through the middle and Dave of United just beat Si in goal to the ball. Forced wide,  Daves first attempt was blocked, a second shot was blocked before Fefa`s attempt was deflected wide off poor old Shanes arm. It was tough on Shane but the shot was going in so a penalty was awarded.

Ami stepped up and casually sent Si the wrong way to put United ahead.

Sandbar weren`t giving up though. Alex made good ground up the right but he often didn`t have many options in the middle.Teo was unlucky when he just failed to connect with a cross from Connie. Mark toiled away up front but twice having weaved his way into good shooting positions he then opted to play the ball out wide.

Simmsy continued his high work rate looking for an equaliser to no avail.

In the 100th minute Mo sealed it for WM United. Breaking down the right he broke into the box, played a sharp one-two with Jo and slotted the chance at the far post.

It was a true final, the favourites just deserving to win it, but Sandbar can hold their heads high. The fact that it took extra time to decide the winner speaks volumes.

Man of the Match was hard to decide, Simon in goal for Sandbar had many memorable moments, and Simmsy in midfield didnt deserve to lose but in the end I`m giving the award to Craig for WM United. He tirelessly battled away for the cause and was at the heart of most of Uniteds attacking forays.

Final score:

WM United 2  Sandbar Sharks 0 (aet )

Nb: Sportsman of the Year: Shane (Sandbar Sharks)

No matter what,  win or lose, rain or shine, good decisions or bad, he gets on with the game, always has a laugh and always thanks the ref after the game. A true good sport.

WSFL Cup Final.

Date: 11 August 2013 (Sunday)

Teams: Cambodia v Tuskan Raiders

Playing conditions: Slippery and soft after some rain

Cup tension and emotion meant both teams took to the field in heightened tension, anxiety and energy. The playing conditions didn't help much in passing football either.

Frustrations, sliding tackles, pulling and tugging soon emerged that left referee Pedro with little choices. Match ended at 0-0 at end of first half.

In a fast counter attack in second half, ball was zipped wide and left to a big tall fast forward player for Cambodia, he took off down the field and struck with some venom. (Chris Sambrook?) He scored and put Cambodia 1-0 up. The Tuskan Raiders soon returned favour and a midfielder struck a nice goal and evened up the score at 1-1. Cambodian player, 14, couldn't keep his mouth shut and concentrate on the game most of the time. Game was almost heading towards extra time, then a free kick was awarded to Cambodia and ball was well struck and ended up in the net.

Cambodia won 2-1 at final whistle.

Gentle rain seemed to be totally ineffective in dousing or quenching the tension and heat that arose throughout the match.

Promotion Relegation Games on Today

Porirua Mens Club vs WM United at Ole Academy 11am

Shamrocks vs Lazy 11 at Boyd Wilson at 3pm

Good Luck Teams.

Match: Promotion/Relegation: Porirua United vs WM United
Venue: Ole Academy Turf
Kickoff Time: 11am
Half Time: 1-0, Full Time: 2-2
Yellow cards: Porirua United: Mike Loyens, late and reckless tackle at 17th min
Porirua United: John Philip (no. 23) dissent by words at 69th min
Red Cards: None
Playing conditions: Gentle breeze, dry surface and intermittent light drizzle

Both teams knew a lot was riding on this match and started with high energy and teamwork.

On a quick attack down the right side, no. 12 of Porirua United took and early shot and opened the scoring on the 2nd min. Ball was played around and passed around at godd speed and both teams put together nice attack/defence moves.

On the 37th min, a WM player and a Porirua United player challenged for the ball and in the process, the WM United player fell awkwardly with his left outstreched arm onto the turf. He suffered an injury that required medical attention. An ambulance was called and players from both teams did their best to comfort and monitor his condition. Medical advice was that player shall not be moved. So, referee blew for half-time on the 45th min mark to enable other players to have a break.

The ambulance from Lower Hutt arrived at 12.40pm and after some treatment, he was helped off the turf onto the waiting ambulace. Match restarted at 12.45pm.

Knowing that a result was needed, both captains agreed that the game would continue until other users arrive. On the 57th min, No. 15 (Matty) of Porirua United was doing nice dribbling close to the opposition's goal line and took a shot and scored a nice goal on a very oblique angle that took Porirua United 2-0 ahead.

WM United stepped up the tempo, and ball was passed from centre onto the right side and found a speedy Joseph. He calmly collected the ball and drilled into the opposition's net on the 65th min. The match was on! Perhaps the defence of Porirua United was caught out, WM United attacked mercilessly and just like earlier move, ball was passed to the right and found Joesph again. He danced few steps and took a shot and pressto, he scored the second goal on the 70th min. Both teams were level on 2-2!!

Neither team wanted to lose and all hands to the pump, both teams couldn't find the breakthrough goal. Seeing that Ole kids have already assembled on the sideline, full time whistle was blown at 1:30pm and that meant 45min was played in second half.

Match ended 2-2 on regulation time possible with a total of 82 min played.

Extra time and penalty shootouts were not possible as Ole kids needed the tuf.

It is now up to the organiser to decide what happens next.

Aside: Great compassion was extended to the injured player by Captain Barry Macdonald and his players from Porirua United towards the injured player. Full credits to both teams for their keen effort in playing and enjoying the game of football.. apart from the few usual tugs, push, hold, careless tackles and cries for handball. Teams compete in the game but without opposition, there is no game. Well done, guys!

Stay tuned for the replay
