John Perkins I found to be a good bastard. He ran a motel near WEKA RD in Raumati and reffed a fair few Hearts games.I for one had no problems with his calls (as far as I remember.)Always had a beer in the clubrooms and despite what Dugdale did to him, he never spoke an ill word of the man,in fact he seemed to hold him in some sort off high regard!
Incidently,I ran into Neil Palmer (Western Suburbs and
Raumati Hearts GK) at the Hawkes Bay game last night. He's been
living in Sydney for the last 10 years and was sporting a Sydney FC
shirt. He was back over here to visit his ill mother.
Just in case anybody recalls him.

Cheers, uiron, for your entertaining memories of the Swain
Incident. Apparently it was front page of the Dominion next day,
complete with Lodge cartoon of the ref digging himself mole-like to
safety. The old man, being a stubborn old cuss, maintains it wasn't
against Miramar because he was playing for Miramar at the time, but
does admit that it was all a long long time ago.
btw, nice to see such a proud supporter of the Hammers - there
seem to be quite a few on the YF site. I had the good fortune to
start supporting them the very season they beat Arsenal in the FA
Cup final - some consolation for watching Stop Out get relegated
that year!
Unfortunately I never got the chance to see Brooking play when
he had that brief stint in the National League a few years
later.

On this occassion I have the edge on your old man when it comes to
memory, Stopout, assisted by a
few newspaper clippings that I have in front of me.
No doubt...The opposition was Miramar. Huingaria was leading 4
- 2 when the game was called off. Gaal and Beck had their
suspensions lifted for the game at the Basin.
One article mentions Swain being escorted from the field by
players from both sides, WFA officials, a policeman and members of
the Wgtn Referees Assn. (We got big crowds in those days).
Two car loads of Police arrived to escort Swain from the
ground.
Ironically, both articles do not mention any of the Miramar
players from that game, but the replay game mentions Jack
Barton, Colin Ward, David Farrington, Henry Greasley, Steve Bruce,
Graham Taylor,(had a brother Les), C. McIvor, Ray
Wright and Graeme Yuile.
If you send me a private message with your email address I
will scan the clippings from both games to pass on to your
dad.
Cheers, and The Hammers win again!!
