Adelaide Uniteds Argentinean midfielder Marcos Flores has taken out the prestigious Johnny Warren Medal at the Hyundai A-League 2010/11 Awards Night held in Sydney tonight.

Flores received 618 votes from his playing peers, well ahead of Brisbane Roars duo of Thomas Broich (495 votes) and Matt McKay (432).

Central Coast Mariners Goalkeeper Matthew Ryan was presented the NAB Young Footballer of the Year Award with Adelaide United striker Sergio Van Dijk collecting the Reebok Golden Boot Award courtesy of his 16 goal haul during the regular season.

After claiming the Premiers Plate with a record breaking unbeaten streak, Brisbane Roar picked up four awards with Ange Postecoglou receiving the Coach of the Year Award, Michael Theoklitos the Goalkeeper of the Year Award, Erik Paartalu the SOLO Goal of the Year Award and the team receiving the Fair Play Award for accruing the least number of yellow and red cards.

Gold Coast United Youth team captain, Steven Lustica, was named the National Youth League 2010/11 Player of the Year.

Matthew Breeze picked up the Zurich Referee of the Year award, an accolade that he last won in 2008/09.

Why do they have these awards before the grand final has been played?

Part of the Grand Final Week buildup. Pretty sure its the same in most sports over there. All those awards seem pretty on the mark to me bar Breeze.

It's strange, but nearly every time I've watched Flores (probably 4-5 full matches + phoenix), I have been largely unimpressed (bar one or two 'neat' things). He just seemed to get taken out of play (legally) too easily.

I'm aware of his brilliance through highlights of games I didn't see, but he just didn't seem to turn up when I watched (and commentators seemed to make apologies for him and blow the few good things he did out of proportion as they are want to do).

Not disputing the award (although it would have been Broich for me), but did anyone else have this experience?

I know, I know, its serious!

Breeze sure did draft in and pick that one up.

We will never fully decide who has won the football.

I'm definitely in the Flores camp- I think that when he was on, he was something else.

To be fair to Broich, if you'd have taken him out of 'that' Roar team and plonked him in Flores' place, he'd probably have received the award. It seemed that the Roar had more outlets than Radelaide, so Broich probably had less chance to shine- which he still did unbelievably.

Not the worst but close.

He gets his surname from what he does to A-League bosses so that they give him awards...
