Have just been looking at other teams import players and noticed that none of the New Zealanders playing for other A-League teams appear to count as visa players. For some reason I always thought we had a massive advantage in that we could sign Australians and New Zealanders, while the australian based teams had to sign NZers as foreign players.
Have the rules recently changed or was i just wrong to begin with?
Cheers

I think you were wrong to begin with. It would be stupid for the FFA not to make it work the other way around as well.

yea i always thought it was stupid, but for some reason thats the way i thought it was...
have just had a look at the CBA for the A-League and it says "New Zealand players treated as Australian Players at Wellington Phoenix" http://www.pfa.net.au/index.php?id=81. But it doesnt say anything about how they are treated for Australian Clubs.

NZ players are overseas players at aussie clubs. Used to count as local players originally (and should still under CER in my probably wrong opinion) but changed I think when they shifted to Asia.

There are a few cases where New Zealanders have Australian passports though, Moss and Smeltz for example. So they are not imports.

Umm no New Zealand players aren't counted as import players in Australian clubs. All New Zealand and Australian players are considered locals in ALL of the A-League clubs.

I am looking at that now and a lot of it seems incorrect. Especially with the marquee lists. I was 100% sure that NZers are foreigners in Oz teams, though only 99% sure now NZers are foreign players. Bullion2010-10-26 17:30:55

You are so wrong.
NZ'ers are not foreign players for the Nix, but they are for Aussie teams, unless they have an Aussie passport too.

^^ is right
Kiwis are foreign players in A league clubs in Aus unless they have an Aussie passport
They need to be good to be accepted there, taking up an import slot

Live in Australia for so many years I guess? Moss and Smeltz both grew up on the Gold Coast.

Then how did it work for the Brisbane Roar? Reinaldo only became a citizen in September but before that with Kosta there by my count that would have been 6 foreign players (excuse me if I'm wrong about this though).

Broich, Reinaldo, Henrique, Solorzano and Kosta....only five I think, unless I've missed someone.

Yeah, I thought 5 too - two Brazilians, the Kostarican, Broich and Kosta

Ok fair enough, my fault for not doing my homework properly! It's still a totally stupid rule though if Kiwis count as foreigners in other teams.

No it's not.
If they weren't foreigners then you'd expect us to get entry into the ACL as well as all the other perks the other 10 teams have.
TBH, we have it pretty sweet.Scottishbhoy2010-10-26 21:51:50

Well they'd count as foreigners in the ACL, so you can see why they made the rule.
