Just keep this in the back of your minds for future ref, a lot of TV rights negotiations are going to happen here soon. Don't think this won't impact WPFC, as the clubs get a % of the TV rights. Of course, WPFC have to be confirmed for future A-League seasons (which seems to be the case). ACL is AFC matter, leave that discussion aside for now.

We're tipping over here that the AFL won't get its desired $1 billion, 5 year deal.

The Fox Sports deal was signed over 7 years, we're upset over here that there wasn't a re-negotiation clause in the contract after 4 or 5 years.

You may want to dig up details of Sky's TV deal as well.

Also note that SBS here have the 2010 and 2014 World Cup TV rights exclusively and that the Socceroos other games (and A-League) won't make it back onto Free-to-air TV here until 2013 (Aus Government anti-siphoning TV laws ensure that).

Keep this thread for Aust, NZ and international A-League TV rights, as it's going to get interesting (and as stated above, it's relevant for WPFC).

Thanks,
DS

(Note: article below is the most relevant I could find at present, but if better ones come along, I'll post it).

Football 'worth more than league' <!-- author --> <!--dt><img src="/images/author.jpg" border="0" alt="Greg%20Buckle" /></dt--> By David Davutovic
<!--strong>Former Australian Captain</strong --> April 16, 2008 <!-- // author --> <!-- // lead story --> <!-- story -->

THE battle of Australia's football codes is not consigned to western Sydney, with football's TV rights tipped to rival that of the AFL when a new deal is nutted out in 2013.

Leading media buyer and analyst Harold Mitchell claims that football's deal may surpass the NRL's $500 million deal and rub shoulders with the AFL.

Mitchell, the man who advised the AFL when it signed the unprecedented $780 million TV deal, predicted that Football Federation Australia's bargaining power would top the $100 million-a-year mark by the time the rights are up for renewal.

"The soccer rights should be a $100 million-a-year sport by 2013," Mitchell said. "It could be equal to the AFL by then if it is properly presented.

"No doubt it could surpass the NRL. The reason is it can grow into all the states, southern and western. Where the NRL is very strong in New South Wales and Queensland, soccer can grow into new areas more easily and readily. Also what's developing is that mums want their kids to play soccer.

"They don't like thuggery so it's perfectly positioned as a family sport. It's minimal contact. It's of high appeal and it is a fast-moving game for TV. Plus it's short."

His argument is supported by the Professional Footballers Association, whose research indicates that football's TV rights - the A-League and Australia matches packaged together - will eventually surpass those of the NRL.

PFA chief executive Brendan Schwab, a former vice-president of AFL club Richmond, believes the TV rights will be lucrative if A-League teams are introduced in western Sydney, Melbourne and the Gold Coast before the next deal.

"The question is when, not if," Schwab said in reference to surpassing the NRL's TV rights.

"We may not be No1, but the key is being the No.2 sport in every Australian market.

"The Socceroos can be the No.1 national team in Australia, with a regular audience of one million and up to 3.5 million for big games.

"Packaged together, these media rights can provide a commercial platform that will sit only behind the AFL in the medium to long term."

Football's current seven-year, $130 million deal with Fox Sports was lucrative at the time it was signed - after just one A-League season.

But it was also signed on the eve of the 2006 World Cup, and Mitchell said the rights even now would be worth considerably more.

In football's favour is the fact that FFA chief executive Ben Buckley was the man who brokered the AFL's $780 million deal.

Talk this morning of a new TV rights deal for the A-League, no link yet, but summary of deal is contained below.

"Just read in the Daily Telegraph( ), FFA and Fox looking at a new deal worth $300 million over 5 years, with $3 million grants to each club to cover salary cap and travel expenses, cant find it online yet".

Stand by, and keep a lookout if you see anything.

This has appeared in the Daily Terrorgraph[16 Dec 2009], but I'm yet to see anything from a more reputable football-media source, like the a fairfax newspaper or even the FFA themselves, but if its true, as one poster on the Melbourne Fan boards said, its akin to our code acquiring nuclear weapons in Australia's crowded sports marketfpr perspective, The last deal was AU$120m over 7 years ($17m per year), this is AU$300m over 5 years ($60m per year):
FFA hits a $300m jackpot with Fox

EXCLUSIVE: Val Migliaccio
16 December 2009

Football Federation Australia is on the verge of signing a new deal with pay-TV provider Fox Sports that would pump some $300 million into soccer.

The Daily Telegraph has learned Fox Sports is expected to replace the existing seven-year agreement struck in 2007, with a new deal worth nearly two-and-a-half times as much.

The new agreement is expected to be worth nearly $60 million a year to Football Federation Australia, with negotiations believed to be close to agreeing a five-year term.

Fox's current deal still has four years to run but could be replaced as early as next season.

Fox Sports appears set to secure the same package, which includes Socceroos home internationals, the Asian Cup, the Hyundai A-League and the AFC Champions League once the deal is signed off.

The deal will be seismic for the A-League clubs, hugely increasing their handout from FFA and putting them all on a far more secure financial footing.

It is understood the A-League clubs will each receive an estimated $3 million annual payment, which will directly cover all clubs' wages and expenses under the current $2.25 million salary cap, women's league teams and national youth league teams.
That in turn is likely to attract more investors to the A-League's clubs with financial burdens lessened due to the TV cash injection.

Despite falling crowds this season the ratings for the Socceroos continue to to be a banker for Fox Sports, with excitement generated by Australia's 2018-2022 World Cup bid and the unchallenged hosting rights to holding the international nations 2015 Asian Cup tournament.

FFA chief executive Ben Buckley was yesterday reluctant to talk about the pending TV deal.

"Our current contract with Premier Media Group is set to expire in June 2013," a tight-lipped Buckley said.

"It is our practice not to comment on commercial arrangements outside the contract duration."

Fox Sports chief executive David Malone declined to comment last night on the new contract.

All A-League matches will continue to be screened live on Fox Sports as part of the deal.

With Melbourne Heart entering the A-League next season and Sydney Rovers due to follow in 2011 the competition will be up to 12 teams and possibly 14 by 2018.

The extra teams are expected to force the Asian Football Confederation's hand to increase the A-League's Asian Champions League representation from the current two clubs to four.

It's not known whether the new deal will contain any provision for free-to-air coverage, though FFA chief Frank Lowy has declared his desire to see some of the A-League on a terrestrial station.

The World Cup in South Africa, which kicks off with the Socceroos facing Germany on June 14 next year in Durban, will be broadcast on free-to-air by SBS, which also has the rights to the 2014 Cup.

[Good news to Terry S, it will secure the money shortfall that he has been losing every year]

Here's the link to the New HD Sport Channel 10 Football Show in Australia. Not sure what that means for NZ viewers in the future. Maybe able to pick up more free-to-air stuff on TVNZ or TV3.

If this is true then it is a fantastic for the future of the A-league and football in general. Clubs will be on a better financial footing....$3million per year is great money. Hopefully it means the A-league will attract better players. It might mean the Nix can get their junior team in the proper A-league compitition.

The TV rights have nothing to do with that.

Yes they do, the issue has always been one of cost (without the FFA funding as they do with the other A-League clubs) the Phoenix weren't in a position to pick up the tab.

It wasn't FFA money tho JD. It was Australia Government money that wasn't allowed to be spent on the Feenix.

So more TV money won't automatically change that.

Cross fingers tho!

Meanwhile, the FFA and the company that owns the A-League's international television rights, World Sports Group, are set for major pay days as a direct result of Del Piero's arrival in the harbour city.

It is believed WSG is deep in talks with Italian broadcasters Sky Italia and state-owned broadcaster RAI, while also speaking to Japanese networks about showing the matches. With the countries boasting a combined population of almost 200 million - and with Juventus boasting an estimated 180 million fans worldwide - matches of Sydney FC would almost certainly generate the largest global broadcast figures of any Australian club in any code by a considerable margin.

Cut & pasted straight from SFCU:

THE Football Federation of Australia is believed to have signed a $175 million five-year television deal.

Fox Sports is believed to have paid a reported $125 million leaving SBS to shell out $50 million in the landmark agreement.

The $35-million-a-year has not been publicly announced but it's expected to be departing FFA boss Ben Buckley's final deal.

Buckley has not set a date to end his six-year tenure.

The deal will give incoming chief executive David Gallop and new A-League head Damien de Bohun a position of fiscal strength.

The new contract will start immediately, according to TV sources.

Fox Sports will continue to show all A-League matches and Socceroos matches - apart from the 2014 FIFA World Cup, which is on the Federal Government's television anti-siphoning list.

SBS will show one live A-League clash per week on Sundays alongside Fox Sports' normal five-match domestic weekend coverage during the season.

SBS also will host Socceroos matches on an hour delay after breaking new ground this month when it showed Australia's 2-1 World Cup qualifying loss to Jordan away.

The TV cash injection is destined to make A-League clubs force FFA to hand out a bigger dividend than the proposed $1.9 million the 10 clubs were expecting to receive this season.

Club chiefs are expecting the FFA to cover the entire $2.62 million salary cap, which also includes third-party agreements to release some financial burden.

FFA officials refused to comment yesterday.

Fox Sports and SBS representatives did not return calls last night.

FOOTBALL FEDERATION AUSTRALIA'S NEW FIVE-YEAR TV DEAL

- Total revenue for TV rights = $175 million for five years

- $35 million each year until 2017

- Fox Sports paid for most of the deal with the Federal Government tipping in for SBS TV's share of the rights

- Deal starts when new 2012/13 A-League season kicks off on October 5

- Fox Sports will show all A-League and Socceroos matches live (outside the FIFA 2014 World Cup tournament due to the Federal Government's anti siphoning law)

- SBS will host one live Sunday A-League fixture per week. The station will also host Socceroos matches on a slight delay

- A-League clubs will currently receive $1.9 million in revenue from the FFA which is to be used for salary caps - about $700,000 short of the total allowed salary cap.

That would include the Socceroos wouldn't it? Would be interesting to hear how much is needed for the FFA to completely fund the salary cap for each team.

Cap is 2.5 isn't it?  so 25 million.

Of course that doen't count any other rights or sponsor dimes or what they may or may not contribute to any player wages outside the cap.

Can't see the FFA only taking 15 mil to pay for the Socceroos and WSW, so not sure if it would be enough to cover the cap 100% then.

Bonita Mersiades @bonitamersiades

1. I understand from sources close to Patrick Delaney that the TV deal will be announced tomorrow. #FFA #foxfootball >>

When we see final deal, we should all genuflect towards Traktovenko, Barlow, @lou_sticca @tpignata9 & @delpieroale #foxfootball #FFA

3. (forgot to number 2) Delaney describes @delpieroale as a "game changer" and #Lowy as a "mean negotiator" (mean = tough) #foxfootball #FFA

4. With @delpieroale on board #foxfootball is now confident their previous 7 year investment will pay off #FFA

5. For #ALeague & #SydneyFC fans, Russian Christmas is January 7th. #Traktovenko

Guess we might not have too long to find out how much the new TV deal is.

AUSTRALIAN soccer's long-awaited broadcast deal is expected to be announced today and Football Federation Australia can thank Alessandro Del Piero for helping it squeeze every last possible dollar out of Fox Sports and SBS with a $39 million-a-year deal.

The new deal easily eclipses the existing broadcast deal, in which FFA was paid $19m a year over seven years.

Club owners will get a bigger slice of the revenue and it will help them cover the $2.5m-a-season salary cap. At the moment, the clubs receive an annual $1.9m distribution from FFA. Some clubs are in such a tight financial situation that they don't spend their entire salary cap.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/sport/football/superstar-alessandro-del-piero-the-game-changer-in-broadcast-deal/story-fn63e0vj-1226519146789

If we got 1.9 mil a year from a 19 mil deal, is it too much to ask that we get 3.9 mil from a 39 mil deal?

I'm guessing they will cover the salary cap and that is about it. Rest of the money will go towards making Wanderers an attractive investment. Hopefully they keep a 'fighting fund' to help teams attract these big names.

Some money into developing NYL sides not attached to A-League clubs would be a good investment also. I can't see why the likes of Wollongong, Gold Coast, Geelong & Tasmania can't have NYL teams. It would lay the groundwork for future expansion in 10 or so years.

Fox much the same as is, Fox has exclusive rights to broadcast the Asian Cup in 2015, and Socceroo matches other than WCQ.

Under the agreement, SBS has the rights to:

• One LIVE Hyundai A-League match per week on a Friday night;
• All Hyundai A-League Finals Series matches on a one hour delay;
• The Hyundai A-League Grand Final on a one hour delay;
• A weekly highlights show;
• Online and mobile rights including simultaneous streaming and highlights; and Radio rights.
• One hour delay of world cup qualifiers for Socceroos.

37 Million in cash per year plus 3 million in marketing set-offs.

To the above needs to be added approximately 6 million per year that will be received by FFA from the Asian Football Confederation.

In summary 43 million plus 3 million in off-sets...other key revenue Sponsors & Payments for the Socceroo matches in Australia by capital city ... I think between 3 & 6 million per game... plus gate at Socceroo & a-League finals ...

My understanding is we are on a tad more than Rugby Union, have a FTA match and the WCQ with a FTA network that will show respect. On balance a step in the right direction and I am glad the name games will be FTA even if delayed.

Overall we are another step on the journey and thank God its only a four year deal ….

BTW the last media deal was 17 million per year....

TV deal gets Phoenix financial reprieve

Rob Morrison in a slightly more bullish mood about Phoenix finances than grumpy old David Dome.

"Being self-sustaining was a core part of our future plans and this will certainly help accelerate it," says Phoenix chairman Rob Morrison.

"Crowds are still the most vital element for us but we now expect to break even next season.

It also means we can put more money into off-field investment, to build a solid base for the club."

Morrison says the club want to increase the size of their school of excellence from eight to 15 players and they will also invest more heavily in sports science, academy coaches and a refurbishment of training facilities.
