Adelaide United manager Aurelio Vidmar has issued a formal apology for comments made at a press conference that he would "chop off" the heads of his players.
Vidmar was jokingly
responding to a line of questions directed at the reigning coach of the
year implying his coaching style was "soft".
"What would you
like me to do? Chop their heads off. I can do that. We can go to Saudi
Arabia and we can do that," Vidmar said on Tuesday morning.
The Reds coach retreated quickly into damage control, and by the afternoon had retracted his comments.
This
morning I was asked a question about my coaching style and I rather
flippantly responded to the journalist. My answer was meant to be
irreverent but I realise now that those comments could be misconstrued
to be a genuine view," Vidmar said through a statement.
"I
apologise, and regret my comments. I understand the impact my words
might have, and I apologise to anyone who has been offended.
"I
did mention something about Saudi Arabia. It was not meant to be
offensive, it was just something I said off the cuff, which is no
excuse.
"I have been to and played in Saudi Arabia, it is a great country
and I enjoyed the time I was there, and I certainly was not trying to
disrespect them in any shape or form."
On Valentine's day in
February this year, Vidmar caused a similar stir when he launched a
scathing rocket after the Reds' humiliating 4-0 loss to Melbourne
Victory at the then Telstra Dome during the play-offs.
"That 4-0 result tonight was politics, nothing else," Vidmar said at the time.
"Whether you're involved directly or indirectly you have an effect. It has an effect on everyone."
"Because of a pissant town this club will never win anything, until you get rid of that c..p."
