Headlines are a bit sensationalist. He'll still be coaching, but officially as assistant.

AFC's objective of increasing the professionalism is justified, however if there was any common sense there would be a clause stating coaches who have made the second round previously would be exempted. Common sense is not however a strength in the part of the world I am in, as we've also seen from the AFC on other issues.

P.S. ACL schedule here - http://www.the-afc.com/en/schedule-a-results click on the group stage tab.

Wish the Asian Champions League was televised.

What's the bet they knew about this all along and didn't act on it.  Adelaide dropping the ball yet again.

Fox Sports Australia cover all the Australian-related games in the ACL and also cover (at least) the semi's and the final live regardless of whose in it.

There's a weekly show called 'Football Asia' which screens here and has highlights as well. That show is made for international markets, but not sure if NZ takes it.

Vidmar made the final but apparently isn't good enough to coach in the ACL. He was also AFC Coach of the year I believe. Interesting to see what goes on, he can go as assistant though.

PS: Will there be an ACL forum during that competition, or at least a thread in this forum?

Boom.

[/QUOTE]Indeed. However when I posted this (and when the headline was generated) the plan for the youth coach to come in as head coach wasn't in place. It's still qiuite sensationalist, I agree.

Obviously Viddie will still be calling the shots, which is good news. I agree an exemption would be common sense... considering he was AFC Coach of the Year, if anyone qualifies for an exemption you would think he would.

I think its more proving a point to Australia. I don't think they like the fact we're the highest ranked team in Asia and that we basically swept the qualifiers aside. That and no West Asian countries got in to the WC, so they're taking it out on the new guys.

There's also a little matter of an Oceania team in the Australian league I hear they're not too pleased about :)

I am not sure it is that cynical actually. They are genuinely trying to increase the professionalism of the ACL in the hope that more people in the region will watch instead of only watching European football all the time. For example they've also stiffened penalties for teams that pull out, there are less spots for the lesser nations and participating clubs have a range of criteria to meet. I think it is more just a case of common sense not being applied in exceptional circumstances.

Pohang are also defending champions from memory.

Tough scheduling for Melbourne coming up with one of their home games only two days after their return leg with Sydney.

Interesting that Sanfrecce losing and Gamba drawing means the Japanese teams don't appear to be doing super well early on. Especially Hiroshima playing at home.

Of course it is before their season but I believe thats true of the CSL as well? No idea on the K League.

It is pre-season in China as well but Beijing Guo'an had played lots of friendlies, and an all-in martial arts session against Pohang.

FYI there are highlights clips on the home page of the www.afc.tv website.
