The "Auckland have had salary cap allowances" for the past two seasons is copium. You'll notice no clubs are moaning about it because there's actually some science behind how the allowance is chosen.

And people are conflating it with the salary clamp down this season. Auckland aren't losing players because they had a massive salary allowance that is ending, they're losing players because the entire league is getting clamped.

Which stands to reason that everyone will struggle.

(I'm not saying Auckland isn't going to find was it essentially a total rebuild tough, just that it's due to the overall salary cap reduction not some special Auckland sauce)

I think we will find that every club will have two to three high earning quality players less than last year.

In Auckland’s case it will likely be Hall, May and Verstrate.

In Wellingtons case it will likely be Singh, Rufer and Payne.

All other clubs will be similar.

It could well be that no team fills their 5 import quota.

Those clubs that can find gold nuggets in their new imports at a lesser cost (thinking Eze this year), will likely flourish.

Based on the rumoured new cap of $3m - if 'Nix spend around that, we are likely spending more than last season not less.

This is genuinely not a bad outcome given the salary cap, particularly if Brimmer (who's still only 28) can rediscover his form. With the right coach this team would be handy.

I think you're right that Verstraete and Girdwood-Reich will follow Steve to Japan, but if we can keep one of them I think Auckland's in a very good place.
