Free United game for flood appeal
GOLD Coast United owner Clive Palmer will throw the gates open at Skilled Park again, this time in aid of the Queensland flood relief appeal.
Palmer will offer free entry to United's next home game against Newcastle on Saturday, January 22.
In exchange for free entry to the game, supporters will be asked to make a donation, however big or small, with the proceeds to be donated to the clean-up and rebuilding efforts currently under way after this week's devastating floods in southeast Queensland.
On a weekend when football across the country will come together to show support for the victims of the flood crisis, Gold Coast United CEO Clive Mensink said it was a time for reflection, generosity and community spirit.
''What we have witnessed recently in Queensland is almost beyond belief and I'm sure everyone who has been fortunate enough to escape being affected by these floods feels deeply for those who have,'' Mensink said.
''Mr Palmer's gesture in opening Skilled Park for free next weekend when we play Newcastle Jets is one of support for those who have lost loved ones, friends, property or precious belongings in this disaster and we are urging everyone to come along and be part of this day.
''By showing up in numbers like they did when we played the Mariners in December, the community can send a message to the victims of the flood disaster that we are all thinking of them.''
The Jets match will be the second time this season Palmer has offered free entry after his ill-fated promotion against the Central Coast was washed out on December 19.
On that occasion, more than 20,000 fans registered for free tickets to the match and 10,146 made the journey to Skilled Park in atrocious conditions before referee Chris Beath abandoned the game after 19 minutes when relentless rain resulted in water pooling on the playing surface.
Mensink urged all those who take advantage of the club's second free entry promotion to dig deep in aid of the flood recovery effort.
''We ask that everyone who takes up this offer of free entry make a donation once inside the stadium so we can assist with the urgent financial support required at this time of need for so many of our fellow Queenslanders,'' he said.
''Whether it is a gold coin donation or a more substantial contribution, it all counts and will all help.
''Here on the Gold Coast, we were very fortunate to escape from the effects of the flooding and this is a great way for our community to lend a helping hand and show the spirit for which Queenslanders are renowned.
''For those who have been affected by the floods and are able to make it to the game, please come along and enjoy some free entertainment on us.
''We hope that in some small way this will provide you with some light relief from the trauma you have experienced recently.''
Supporters wishing to secure tickets for the match should go to www.ticketek.com.au or a Ticketek agency from 5pm today (maximum 8 per transaction).
Supporters attending tonight's match against North Queensland Fury at Skilled Park will be able to obtain tickets from the box office.
8000 free United tickets snapped up
Harvey Ferle | January 18th, 2011
GOLD Coast United is poised to finally get a chance to play in front of a full house, with 8000 tickets already ordered and fine weather predicted for Saturday's free flood fundraiser against Newcastle.
Team owner Clive Palmer will throw open the gates of Skilled Park for the second time in a month in return for fans making a donation, of any size, to the flood appeal.
It comes after more than 10,000 fans braved horrendous conditions only to have the first free match abandoned due to the wet pitch.
Coach Miron Bleiberg said the 10,000 barrier could be exceeded by today.
"We are expecting anywhere between 10,000 and 20,000, hopefully closer to 20,000," he said.
Bleiberg said not only was the free entry for a good cause, the atmosphere of a full house would have flow-on effects for his players.
"The players love stuff like this," he said.
"If they go to Melbourne and get results there will probably be an extra 5000 people at the gates, so that's another motivation (for the players to win)."
Skilled Park can accommodate 27,400 spectators. So if the stadium is full and everyone who shows up donates just $3.65 -- that will mean $100,000 goes to help support the Queenslanders dealing with the flood crisis.

Ticket prices slashed for final two home games
GOLD Coast United owner Clive Palmer has slashed ticket prices for the crunch matches against Adelaide United next Wednesday evening (2 February) and Central Coast Mariners on Wednesday 9 February, with fans now able to enjoy the do-or-die games from as little as $15.00 with all childrens tickets just $5.00.
The new prices make it more affordable than ever for the Gold Coast community to support their team in the exciting run towards the Finals Series, with over a 50% reduction on several ticket categories for what will be vital matches for Miron Bleibergs men. The northern, western and eastern stands will be opened for both games giving supporters a wide choice of excellent seats.
United CEO Clive Mensink said the club wanted to give as many fans as possible the opportunity to come along and support their local team, with Gold Coast very much in the running for silverware this season.
The great success of the free-entry game against Newcastle recently was incredibly infectious, Mr Mensink said.
The goodwill shown by the community and the atmosphere generated at the game were fantastic and certainly helped the team, so when the board met on Monday morning we decided we would adjust ticket prices for our last two home fixtures of the season.
We also recognised that with children heading back to school this time of year can be an expensive period for many families. We wanted to make supporting the team as affordable as possible and we are confident that these new prices will do exactly that.
The last two games of the season are sure to be tense and exciting, which is what sport is all about. We want everyone to come along and help their local team make this season a successful one.
Gold Coast United vice-captain, Michael Thwaite, said the support the team received from the near 15,000 crowd in the 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle Jets was a real 12th man for the players.
It was amazing and it gave us all that extra bit of energy we needed to really take the game to our opponents, he said.
You cant measure how important it is to the players and what a difference it can make. We have two very important home games left before the finals and the Gold Coast community can really play their part in helping us to make this season a great success.
