Just for comparison, here are some attendance figures from the just-completed J-League season. Yes, I'm aware it's apples and oranges in terms of population base, the length of time the league has been running, local popularity of the sport, and probably other factors. However, Australia and Japan are both at the top of the Asian tree, and looking at their local leagues might be informative or interesting.
Total Attendance: 5,852,705
Average Attendance: 19,126
(18 Teams x 34 rounds = 306 matches. J-League doesn't have playoffs)
Highest Match Attendance: 53,783 Urawa Reds v Kashima Antlers, Round 34 (6th v 1st, with Kashima needing to win to clinch the title)
Lowest Match Attendance: 5,567 Kyoto Sanga v JEF United, Round 12 (at the time 12th v16th - Kyoto eventually finished 12th, and JEF finished last [18th] and got relegated, now apparently looking for Shane Smeltz)
Total goals: 791 (avge 2.58/match)
Most interesting for me is the huge difference in highest and lowest attendance, although I've seen Urawa play ACL games on telly and their fans are amazing. While the game decided the league winner, it was a "nothing" game for the Reds, who were too far back to chase an ACL spot.
Source - Football Siam (11-17 Dec 09)
Edit - Just looked at the J-League website, and in English there is a PDF doc on attendance up to 2008. The league is aiming for 11 million to attend by 2010. They claim 9.1 million for last season, but this includes home games for the clubs in the ACL.
Even so, if Football Siam's numbers are correct, that's a fair drop overall this season
Edit v2.0 - Found another PDF that puts last season's aggregate for league only at 5,899,063. Something's up here - that means 3.2m attended ACL games in Japan in 2008 according to the other doc.
