Police from Kings Cross Local Area Command were called to an apartment on Onslow Avenue, Elizabeth Bay, following reports Ian Gray  was dead  inside the premises about 11pm last night.

A group of the mans friends attended the apartment about 10:45pm and forced entry into the home after having concerns for the welfare of their 46-year-old friend, NSW Police said in a statement.

The alarm was raised by players from Maccabi Hakoah FC, the club Gray was coaching, who went to his unit and forced entry when he didnt show up for training and failed to answer his door last night.

Gray was found dead in the lounge room of the apartment and police were called to the premises.

Were just shocked by it all, Grays devastated father Avenel told The Manly Daily newspaper.

Its all very unclear at the moment, no one can figure out what happened.

The family is obviously all very upset.

We cant even make funeral arrangements until they release the body.

Born and raised in Manly Vale, Gray began his football days with Manly Vale Soccer Club before going on to play with APIA Leichhardt and Marconi in the National Soccer League. He was also capped 14 times for the Socceroos.

News of Grays death shocked former teammates.

I have known Ian since I was 15 years old ... its a great loss of a very good man, former Socceroo and Marconi goalkeeper Bob Catlin said.

He was a great player, probably one of the best this country has ever seen. Everyone is just devastated.

Manly United coach Phil Moss played under Gray in the Australian Maccabiah team in 1997 and 2001 and was also brought to Northern Spirit in the NSL, where Gray was an assistant coach to Graham Arnold.

He was the most passionate football person you will ever meet, Moss told The Manly Daily.

I wouldnt be where I am today and played national league if it wasnt for him.

He was just an amazing man.

Police set up a crime scene with police and specialist forensic officers conducting examinations of the scene.

Detectives from Kings Cross Local Area Command investigating the matter are being assisted by officers from the State Crime Commands Homicide Squad and are treating the mans death as suspicious, a NSW police spokesman said..

A post mortem examination will be conducted to establish the cause of his death while a report will be prepared for the information of the Coroner.

Investigators are appealing for anyone with information about the mans death or who has information that could assist with the investigation to contact Kings Cross Police via Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

RIP Ian Gray.

Very strange to have to force an entry into the apartment, it almost assumed that the murderer must have used his keys to lock the place up. Seems some planning involved either before and after the murder.

A sad day for Australian football.

A commenter on 442 seems very adamant that it was a stroke, rather than foul play, but doesn't cite his sources.

Someone's been charged over this.

A woman has been charged with manslaughter and supplying drugs after the suspicious death of former Socceroo Ian Gray, police say.

The breakthrough came just hours after Gray was found dead in the lounge room of his Elizabeth Bay apartment.

A group of the 46-year-olds friends who had grown concerned for his welfare uncovered the body after breaking into his Onslow Avenue home in the Sydney harbour-side suburb on Tuesday night.

Police are treating the death as suspicious and homicide squad detectives are investigating.

The woman, 22, of Richmond northwest of Sydney, was arrested on Wednesday at 9am (AEDT) at premises on Darlinghurst Road, Kings Cross, and was later charged with manslaughter, supplying a prohibited drug, and stealing, police said.

She was refused bail to appear at Central Local Court on Thursday.

Former Socceroo Ian Gray found dead
AAP February 17, 2010, 6:33 pm

Claims that the suspicious death of former Socceroo Ian Gray is linked to drugs have shocked friends and family, who say such behaviour would be out of character.

Police continue to investigate Gray's death since friends discovered his body at his Elizabeth Bay home on Monday.

A post-mortem examination is expected to determine a cause of the 46-year-old's death, while some media outlets are reporting the discovery of a syringe in his apartment.

"That would be very not like him," his mother Georgina Gray told Network Ten.

"That wasn't him at all. He wasn't doing any kind of scene like drugs or anything like that."

Friends forced their way into Gray's apartment after he failed to answer numerous phone calls and did not show up for appointments.

Although retired as a professional player, Gray maintained strong links to the soccer community, working as a coach and trainer of junior teams.

"Nobody had a bad word to say about him and he helped save the careers of lots of good players ... Mark Schwarzer, Steve Corica and countless others," friend Bob Caitlin said.

He played 35 matches for the Socceroos over nine years.

In 2004, Gray was inducted into the Football Federation Australia (FFA) Hall of Fame - Award of Distinction, after beginning his career with the Manly Vale and Western Suburbs clubs.

An experienced defender or midfielder, he started a 12-year national representative career in 1981, and was chosen for the senior Australian side in their 1984 World Cup campaign.

While visiting Thailand three years ago, Gray suffered injuries during an assault from which he never fully recovered.

"The doctors said he probably wouldn't ever be 100 per cent but he was progressing," Mr Caitlin said.

Details of Gray's funeral are yet to be released.

Meanwhile, police are appealing for public information about the death. Anyone who has information can call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.

A 22-year-old prostitute charged with manslaughter of Ian Gray

February 18, 2010
Former Socceroos player Ian Gray died from a lethal dose of heroin, allegedly supplied by a Kings Cross prostitute who stole his laptop, a court has heard.

Sherryn Marie Davis, 22, is accused of Gray's manslaughter in Sydney, which police documents allege was committed by "an unlawful and dangerous act".

She is also charged with one count of supplying the prohibited drug, and stealing from him a laptop worth $3,000, some clothes and a digital camera.

The crimes were allegedly committed between 8pm on Sunday night and 9am Monday morning.

Gray, 46, was found in his Elizabeth Bay unit about 11pm on Monday after friends broke in when they could not get in contact with him.

His father, Avenel, said police told him a syringe was found near his son's body.

Davis did not apply for bail in Sydney Central Local Court, and it was formally refused.

She did not even come up from the cells to appear before the court.

Manslaughter? A lethal dose while having the laptop, clothes and camera stolen at the same time can potentially have the woman charged with murder with intent to steal as a reasonable grounds. If Gray hasn't got previous evidence of using drugs (i.e. old needle picks) then there is something wrong. Oh well more news to follow I guess.
