I think Miron has finally lost the plot completely...

Mitch Cooper will be given the captains armband for Gold Coast United when they face Melbourne Heart this Friday night at AAMI Park, on his A-League debut no less!

He may be the youngest captain in full-time professional football history? (modern history at least).

I think this is going to be more symbolic than anything. Still a joke though, no wonder the team are sh*t.

How is this crazy exactly?

Cold Ghost have very little chance of making the Top 6 and Miron the Moron is blooding young talent to prepare them for next season.

Nothing crazy in that.

agree with blooding players.. But if their still fielding senior players, it should be those players who step up with the captaincy and show the younger players what is expected as a professional

If your good enough you're old enough and Miron obviously thinks he's good enough.

Good move. They have lost out on their season, and are now trying different things. Will be the youngest captain according to articles I have seen. Good to see he learned his football here

Cooper, who was born in Vanuatu and spent his early youth in New Zealand before moving to Queensland, will be joined by another debutant, Jake Barker-Daish, as Gold Coast are expected to field a side with just two players over the age of 23

I don't understand, having red Miron's comments, what it is that is so objectionable as to sack the coach.

Also, given that Miron obviously doesn't support the captaincy of Mitch, how can he stay on as manager when he is powerless to even make team decisions such as captaincy. And what manager would want to come on board when the owner is going to interfere and micromanage to such a degree.

Who is the worst coach in the A-League? Clive Palmer!!! He hasn't let Miron run the team - put your money in and let the pros do their jobs!

Thread name changed due to the whole thing not being Mirons idea at all.

Owners should be just that, owners. They should be part of a long term vision for a club, but let the manager make the football decisions

Exactly. It's not fair on this kid, just so Palmer can make some sort of meaningless statement.

Lol, what a farce. GCU are now a team with no fans, almost no contracted players, a batsh*t crazy owner, and a coach who must surely be about to pull a Capello. I would put good money on them not being around next season.

He left the club 3 months ago, but the whole thing is just a mess. The FFA really should step in and try and fix the club but they won't.

This makes Abramovich interfering look decidedly hands-off in comparison.

What does the owner think he's doing? He has made some f*cking strange calls.

The only thing that I can think of is that he wants to destroy his own club, maybe he can't sell it or is not allowed and wants out.

Miron has to walk if he has any pride.

A lot of speculation (not that I buy it as i'm not a conspiracy theorist) is that he wants out, but is trying to force the FFA to seize the licence after which he can try and sue them. Palmer does love a good litigation.

Nice also when the club's CEO is a complete toady to the owner and co-operates fully in Palmer's interference in coaching:
'United CEO Clive Mensink said the club took the decision to appoint Cooper seriously and Palmer was unhappy with Bleiberg describing it at a press conference as "ceremonial".

"I think we have to put it into perspective, given the injuries and suspensions we have at the moment.

"We feel it was only natural that we bring in one of our younger guys (as captain)." '

Also the senior players seem more concerned with their pay packet from Palmer rather than any loyalty to the coach:

'Mensink said the likes of Rees had supported Palmer's controversial decision to appoint Cooper.

"The senior players like Kristian supported the decision and why it was made," Mensink told AAP.'

Seems on reading this report that Miron pretended to go along with the decision to humour his bullying owner, whilst always intending Kristian Rees would actually fulfill the role of captain:

'Bleiberg said as much when he admitted it was only "ceremonial", and that the kid "would just toss the coin and that (veteran defender) Kristian Rees would then decide which way to run and give the instructions in the game" - comments to which Palmer took exception.'

Good opinion piece by Cameron Atfield, an editor of the Brisbane Times and committed supporter of Gold Coast:

Thank God the Phoenix have competent owners who don't interfere in team selections and coaching matters!

So this is the same reason Capello left England. In this case the owner thought he knew best and was interfering with the running of the team.

Buckley condemns Palmer comments

Football Federation Australia CEO Ben Buckley has officially responded to Gold Coast United owner, Clive Palmers comments about the state of the Hyundai A-League.

"Football fans across Australia will today rightfully condemn the lack of respect inherent in comments made by Clive Palmer," said FFA CEO, Ben Buckley.

"The comments are offensive to the players, coaches, administrators and volunteers who are the life and soul of Australian football.

"We welcomed Clive into the game and lauded his investment, but no matter how frustrated Clive may feel about his involvement, these comments are out of order.

"I remind Clive that as a chairman and owner of a club, he has obligations to the competition, his fellow club chairman and investors in the other nine clubs, and to the game itself."

Palmer had earlier expressed his dislike for the world game in an interview with The Sunday Mail, making the following claims.

"I don't even like the game, I think it's a hopeless game.

Palmer who holds an A-League licence for a further two years also claimed he could head to court if he was to be stripped of his licence.

"If we wanted to stay (in the A-League) and they (FFA) wanted to take it (the licence) off us, they'd all be in court, and Ben Buckley would run a thousand miles," Palmer said.
