The assistant coach was on fox sports news saying it wasn't true but he seemed as clueless as the rest of us.

Given the strength of our current squad, wouldnt it make more sense to get Cullina as marquee?   I think additional depth with a creative midfielder is the missing piece in the Nix puzzle...

Signing Charlie Miller will however give the YF faithful something large to chant at.

So would signing Hard News.

Yeah, but Charlie Miller can play

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Surely Melbourne Victory will also be after Smeltz. With Thompson out for much for next season they are also in dire need of a decent striker.

Not sure I'd want Culina. He seems a bit of a d***head (runs in the family?), although I suspect he'd be back off to Holland anyway.

Would probably end up in the yoof sqod. Ha...

I DO hope however that this means the addition of a possible two franchises for 11/12 (12 in total) as originally planned for by AFF.

The last thing the A-League needs is MORE clubs. It needs financial viable current clubs. This whole expand, expand, expand quest is just silly.

I just want FFA to get Aussie well represented so we can start the whole 'franchise for Chch' debate again. Probably wont happen but who knows... would be years away at the very least.

So after reading the links there is still no guarantee that GCU will last into the next season.

I hope it does - was looking forward to a 30-game league.

I'm sure the Nix management are too.  The last thing they need now is to re-do the budgets.

Jesus.. The A-League is in real strife.

Thank god the Nix are still running without FFA intervention.

I don't think that GCU is not going anywhere. They are back for next season at least. If you have a squad full of one, two three year contacts players, it's not worth stopping after the first season since the total cost would far outweight the total benefits. If they cut short, the club still has to pay the players contract in full and Clive Palmer can pay that amount in full. Not worth such an effort. At least reduce a percentage of the losses by lasting long in extra sponsorship and some gatetakings before making a decision to cut short. It only means that time is wasted a bit.

Also for a guy who declares a committment to the club and is a billionaire, I find it hard that he would be tight on a few million a year when he knew full well that it is likely to be running at a loss as it is with the other A-leagues clubs. Say if you have a $3,000 in available cash in your account, are you going to worry about a few missed placed dollars on a play toy?? A person who spend 50 air tickets for friends, family and supporters to watch their youth team in the grand final, it's not characteristics of a owner pulling out so early.

Mike Cockerill yesterday predicted the Gold Coast were going under, and that Fowler was goingto Sydney, all we have confirmed to date is this:

http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/news/986522/Fraser-to-take-reins-at-Fury

Fraser to take reins at Fury

A-League boss Archie Fraser has quit his post and is set to parachute straight into a new role as North Queensland Fury's acting chief executive.

After just 13 months in the job, former St Kilda AFL CEO Fraser will base himself in Queensland long-term after commuting between Sydney and his Gold Coast home since his appointment.

He will be in charge of the restructuring and revamping of the Fury, who have been saved by a $1.3 million cash injection by the FFA, with his first task to sort out the playing roster and find a successor to former coach Ian Ferguson, who jumped shipped for Perth Glory after discovering he would not be reappointed for 2010-2011.

Fraser will act as a consultant to the FFA with his focus on the fortunes of the three struggling Queensland clubs - the Fury, Brisbane Roar and Gold Coast United, who are on the point of quitting the competition.

After his mission at the Fury is complete his next task will be to find a way of helping dysfunctional Gold Coast United - assuming erratic billionaire boss Clive Palmer has not followed through on his pledge to walk away from the competition - find a way of forging ahead and connecting with the local community.

Fraser's switch has been backed by FFA CEO Ben Buckley who believes his local knowledge of the Queensland market will help turn the tide for all three embattled franchises.

Fraser, a former professional player in Scotland with Greenock Morton, was formerly chief executive at AFL club St Kilda.

FFA CEO Ben Buckley said the proposed new arrangement will enable him to move back to Queensland with the capability to continue important strategic and operational work for FFA in the key Queensland market.

I want to thank Archie for his outstanding contribution in the role of Head of Hyundai A-League since joining us last February, Buckley said.

"It has been both a very challenging and very successful year for the A-League with the expansion to a ten team competition, and whilst presenting some challenges, it underpinned a growth of over 300,000 in additional spectators.

Archie has brought to his role a high level of commercial acumen as well as a deep understanding of football and club operations.

Buckley said the FFA would now begin the search for a new Head of A-League.

In response to media reports today, Buckley said the Gold Coast United licence had not been terminated.

We have been talking to the club for some time about options around restructuring to further its development as a viable long term operation, Buckley said.

Discussions are continuing and include looking at how we can work together to attract further sponsorship and investment and better ways to engage local community support for the club.

"In the mean time the club has confirmed that it is business as usual."

All this bad news about the A-League will help Australias chances of securing the WC. Lowrys plan was to quickly build up the size of the A-League so it looked like the Oz domestic scene was big and vibrant.
Well the wheels are rapidly falling off the rapid expansion wagon. Too many new clubs. Not enough money and probably not enough quality players. The world football community will be taking note.
Combined with the 500,000 unsold WC tickets in SA will mean that many countries will be wary on taking a gamble and sending the WC downunder. The safest bet will be to hold it in the big hitting continents like Europe,America or Asia.
It will be a real shame for Australia because they would have held a great WC. Also we in NZ would have had the benifit of a WC right on our doorstep.
I think the right course for the FFA would be to take a breather.....consolidate what they have now and hold the status quo for a couple of years.
Then maybe when the economic situation improves and maybe they can get more money out of TV and sponsors then they can think about more clubs.

If Clive Palmer is just posturing re pulling out of funding GCU it is another in a series of ultimatums from him to the FFA.

It could well be just brinkmanship to force the FFA to do what he wants or part of a wider attempt by all the owners to get a better split of any pending rewards in the new media deal and finals playoff income.
It doesn't look good in the public eye and is surely detrimental to football"s positive  progression in Australia and NZ right now.

If it is just posturing from Palmer to get his own way it smacks of rich bullyboy, high stakes gambling not unlike America's Cup yachting legal maneuvers of late.

I hope not. That's  all very well for the well padded high rollers like Palmer but the ones that inevitably suffer are those in both countries whose livelihoods are endangered in the sport we love.

Improving,,on the up, a work in progress from Italiano and the Nix. Bring on the bathroom bling in '24! COYN!

Regarding expansion, Melbourne Heart look to be the real deal with an excellent sponsor, properly credentialed foreign coach etc. I don't think expansion as such is to blame, more a matter of who the licenses have been handed to.

And without expansion interest would be waning with the same old eight teams playing each other over and over.

Do we know if they have officially gone under? Or is it just speculation currently?

We will never fully decide who has won the football.
