Have no reason to doubt that this is offside, but is it the goal move or does the ball go out wide?

I think it's the goal move. The ball goes right and Berisha runs onto it and breaks through the defenders. Will need to watch replay again though to be sure.

The way the player with the ball is facing(and B is offside)by the time he would have to change directions, perhaps B was not offside. I don't know, just thinking.

I don't know either. I need to see the play again and pause it for myself rather than trusting someone elses screenshot.

If true, totally inappropriate appointment.

Anyone who knows a modicum about managing conflicts of interest, especially PERCEIVED conflicts, would steer well clear of such a situation.

Accordingly I find it hard top believe, or am somewhat gobsmacked by FFA incompetency.

"He was bandaged up after bleeding profusely for several minutes and was aggrieved Smith escaped a yellow card but battled on before being stitched up during the halftime break. "

I thought this looked a bit dodgy too.  Will the match committe people look at this incident.  Did look non-accidental on replays.

How does this happen?  For goodness sakes, think there needs to be a clear out of a few old goats in this organisation.

Amusing to hear Ben Buckley greeted with a chorus of boos when he was introduced post-match. If that's true about the Gillett connection with Roar then it's grossly stupid.

Incidentally, although I think he got that penalty decision wrong Gillett is not a bad referee overall. He seems to make fewer dud decisions than just about any A League ref except Delovski.

I think the foul was correctly awarded agaisnt Smeltz. He ran full speed into Smith, even though the ball was nowhere near Smith. He actually makes contact with Smith's feet before the contact with the arm.

Smith had already played the ball when Smeltz clattered into him. It was no foul by by book, just bad luck.

And to cap the whole thing off, the Roar release a press statement with a subject line saying that they lost the Grand Final.

If that was in the middle of the field, would that be given as a foul? We'd all be saying no so now it's in the box it becomes a penalty? Madness.

Rubbish decision at a crucial time. Referee affected the result well and truly.

Which final were you two watching? His plant foot, if even touched (be it ever so slightly) was planted straight and true 100%. He only fell over when he shifted all his body weight to his shooting foot, which he subsequently made a meal of. Decision was poor.

Thats what I saw to, as it was heading towards the ground, his planting foot got clipped which may have caused the airswing.

Nah, you can't blame the Brisbane player for that. Smeltzies own fault.

As for the penalty, glory are right to feel aggrieved...but you should never defend like that in the box. I dunno what the perth player who had a hack was thinking, he was no where near the ball and just gave the ref a chance to make a f*** up.rjmiller2012-04-23 09:26:39

When he planted his foot, it hit the ball what helped caused the air swing. Watching it live I did think it was a penalty, but from the first replay you could see it wasn't. Dunno if Gillett checked with the assistants before giving it, but he really should have.

I don't think it was penalty because Berisha was clipped and therefore fell over, I think it was a penalty because he got clipped into the ball, causing it to move and therefore deny a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Yeah, there was contact but only minimal. It may have been enough to alter his planting foot which did make the ball bobble. Initially I thought it was a pen, mainly due to Miller trying to grab Berisha.

And anyway, Perth would be hypocrites complaining about refereeing decisions, if Ifill's penalty was awarded, as it probably should have, then Perth's season most likely would have finished two weeks ago

The best thing about that situation is that we didn't carry on complaining about poor penalty decision in that game, which is the exact opposite of what Perth fans are doing now. Also, if their offside goal had not been incorrectly awarded last week, CCM would have been in the final.

I know it's cliche, but bad decisions do even themselves out over a season (even if it's in the last minute of a grand final).patrick4782012-04-23 10:40:09

Not sure how a team that had one shot off target all night can claim they were robbed.

I saw it the same way, was a small touch, which may not have been enough to knock him over, but certainly affected the possible shot. The decision to penalise was more likely down to the very physical manner in which Perth played the game. The late tackles all through the game was clearly a tactic to throw the Roar off their game.

If the game went to extra time, I think the Roar would have still won. They sat back and tried to defend the lead too early. But it was a Cup Final, strange things happen. We won't ever know what would have happened.

You really need to watch the replay properly. The ball didn't hit his plant foot. It bobbled off the same sh*tty Suncorp turf that Berisha had been cursing earlier in the game. Berisha missed it and fell over. Simple as that.

Look at the turf, there is nothing on the turf that would have caused the ball to bobble that much. The ball takes it's bobble immediately after Berisha's foot comes down past it towards the ground, so the best conclusion as to what happened was that Berisha's foot hit the ball on the way down, causing it to bobble.
