Hey guys and gals... Anyone know definitively why the linesmen have different flags? One always has a yellow one and the other a red and yellow chequed one? ie:

Seems the one with the yellow flag usually runs the left half on telly and the chequed one the right side. Got me baffled.

EDIT: Oops sorry posted in the wrong place, should be general football discussion. My bad.

The 'senior' linesman usually gets the chequered one

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

OK.. but why? He doesn't overrule the other lino, and doesn't replace the ref if injured cos there's a 4th official... or does he?

An Assistant Referee can't overrule anybody. Assistants don't make decisions, referees do.

The flag thing goes back back to the good old days before 4th officials, when the senior Asst always would take over if something happened to the ref. Nowadays it would usually be the 4th official who'd take over.

There are still occasions, at lower levels normally, when the senior Asst would take over from the ref if need be and the 4th offical will become an Assistant.

Hope that made sense. It did in my head!Jag2010-03-12 22:07:01

This always makes me nervous when running lines for big matches and the other assistant is less experienced that me.

Neither had I until a mate at work who's been spending a month or so at home with a busted achilles noticed it.
