Do you think perhaps that Domey/Welnix don't know whether they can meet Rudan's demands until the NLWG finishes its work and the very future of the Nix are assured? If we're out in 2020 anyway fudge it, we might as well let Greenacre coach the last season

I don't know if Greenacre has done his pro licence course yet, not sure when the FFA have it scheduled.

Mark seemed pretty angry at the club in the post match press conference. Said he wants the club to be more ambitious and they're still in discussions but there's a deadline.

Worth listening. Positive spin is that he seemed extremely passionate. But yeah, also a little angry. This game might end up mattering quite a lot, and would have been better at home.

Clearly not happy about the decision to take a home game to sydney. Great to see his passion for the club and football in NZ. Hope Welnix get off their behinds and put a decent offer in front of him.

Rudan has got the Nix on field football issues largely sorted out. But it appears there are still major management issues at the club that still need to be sorted. This seems to be a real sore point with Rudan as it regularly crops up.

Lets face it the club has been really poorly managed for the last three or four years. Just because we are now winning some games doesnt change that fact. The dumb arse decision to play a home game in Sydney is just another example of the management problems the club has.

I have worked for years in international business and recruiting. Two things have stunned me about the Nix managemnt. 1, the level of incompetence. 2, That there is no accountability or attempt by the owners to recruit competent management.

It is hard to imagine a scenario where the people who have been making incompetent decisions for years will be able to put together proposals that will satisify Rudan. IMO it is very likely he will leave at the end of the season

good on Rudan

Finally someone calling Robert and David for their lack of ambition and despite not saying their specific names for  "sitting on backsides"

Even more pleasing since the football media in NZ seem up those backsides

Something I have been saying for a long time.

It shouldnt however need a coach to say it

Time for Rob to find some courage and time for David to be put out to pasture

Hire a decent CEO, give him a decent budget and freedom. Make sure he is the right personality type to get the best out if Rudan and we will have a long lasting football team to be proud off

Love the honesty from Rudan post-match. The club is in a hole off the field with the license issue presumably preventing the investment we need to become a great football club.

The Federation reference was slightly encouraging - but lots needs to happen now - otherwise Rudan is gone - and think that will be us gone too. There's a lot of money floating around these two new clubs, and we just won't be able to keep/attract players.

Anyone know when this license decision is made ?

So frustrating for all - inc the owners - especially given the A League has definitely slipped back this year on the field. Perth are a step above everyone else, and will win the PP & GF.

Of the other top 5 sides - Mel Victory, Mel City and Adelaide are all flat - last night's derby was awful - and Sydney are battling, just getting through with their combative midfield and a bit of extra quality up front.

It will such a missed opportunity if this goes pear-shaped, given our on field progress despite having the tightest budget in the league.

The media and some fans are a bit up Rudan's backside as well, though.

I think he has been pretty good overall, and his passion and general man-management have had a lot to do with getting the team to play a bit better than the sum of their parts. However, in the first 6 games there was one win, two draws, three losses, the football was truly dreadful, and I thought Rudan was tactically incompetent. In the last 7 games there have been 1 win, 3 draws, and 3 losses. In between there was that 7 game stretch where there were 5 wins and 2 draws, and I think a lot of people are still judging Rudan and the team far more on that run than on the other 13 games they've played.

Teams have figured out that if you defend deeper then most of the threats are dissipated, and the defence has been ripped apart several times in just about every game. Kurto is probably worth 6 or 7 of the team's 28 points by himself.

A lot of this is down to the poor managerial transitions and thus the player recruitment left to people like David Dome over the last couple of seasons, but I think a lot of people are assuming a lot of upside to Rudan pretty much because he is passionate and has been successful relative to the last 3 seasons. I think the club should absolutely be trying to keep him, and he is so very, very right about the Nix and NZF, but you'd think we're in first place the way some people talk about him.

8/10. Marks off for starting Burns ahead of Williams, and for signing Way ahead of Tratt - both blunders IMO.

Starting Kopa ahead of Golec, and failure to use a 3-4-3 or 4-3-3 to fit Sheridan, Williams, Krishna and Singh in the starting 11 might turn out to be mistakes too.

Extra credit for signing Rufer. I'd judged him on his touch and passing in a few brief appearances last year and got it wrong. His touch is improving and his passing is still dodgy, but he more than makes up for it with strength and determination.

11/10 for management style, trying to improve the whole club, player motivation, and making the least valuable squad competitive with  teams worth three times as much.

Remember when one guy who bothered to go to a pre-season game in Melbourne made a joke? Basically the genesis of that...

But yeah he's exceeded expectations. Still he's not perfect- while he made some valid points in the post match, he's still a coach whose side lost.

Time to see the plan for the final stretch.

I did wonder that myself, but will give him the benefit of the doubt.  Love his passion and it was a ludicrous decision by the club to play in Oz. Lunacy.

It takes a brave man to take a swing at his employers in the media - and hes done it a couple of times.

Rudan comes from a position of strength though because he is delivering and he can very well say 'hey if you give me more, I can deliver more, or I can go back home to Sydney' because lets face it, his coaching job at the Phoenix will pretty much put in front and centre for any other HAL coaching jobs that open up - and those clubs are *usually* a bit more cashed up than us (Melbournes, Sydney, Perth)

I'll also add, look at the difference a good CEO makes when you look at Perth and Tony P. I don't know what to make of Dome. Thats based on nothing more than watching from outside the tent and not knowing what he does day to day and how well he does it. He could very well be a good GM in relation to the next person but I am leaning more towards him not being.

Not sure why this needs to be in the media, smacks a little of getting his excuses in. End of the day we're going to have to win away to get anywhere in the post season. I'm more interested to hear why his mid season signings don't seem to have improved the team, and why he thinks we've lost form (including whether the uncertainty around his future is contributing to it).

Team apparently refusing to do press and asked for no press to be at the airport when they landed which is a shame because they've been open recently, it would be good for them to just address the raised concerns and move on.

While Rudan probably said the truth (although it's doubtful the team has a smaller budget than CCM if you look at their relative squads so he's bending the truth quite a bit there) those should have probably been internal conversations. With any employer that I've had if I slammed them in public, even if what I said echoed internal conversations that we would be having, I would expect some sort of reprimand and I would do the same for anyone who works for me.

He knows how to open up conversation into a certain direction. Talking about family last, playing in Sydney this week. Easier than talking about his own shortcomings.

Where are still miles better than last few years and I guess everyone at the club is trying to improve. Frustrating thing is that we saw a better team and hoped to see it more often. If you think how close the 4th spot is doubles the frustration. IF Krishna converted the pen. IF we had a home game and fans could have pushed the team to a draw vs Sydney. We would be at 4th spot. it would be in our hand to defend it. Now we have hope for the teams in front of use stuff it up.

In the last week or so:

Rudan's said the Sydney game could and should have been played at Eden Park.

The Phoenix media people post a video with Rudan's thoughts on Eden Park. Dome praises the Eden Park managers.

Morrison makes a rare public comment, that Auckland ought to have an A league franchise. And that past failure is no guarantee of future failure, and it's logical to have a franchise in the only major Australasian population centre that doesn't have one.

Wonder if one of Rudan's prerequisites for staying is a shift to Auckland. And if Morrison's considering it.

While Ernie had a good season with tap and go, Morrison has been an excellent front man for the owners group.

Gareth's strengths lie in being a provocateur- I think he'd need someone else to front to capitalise on the good will recently generated.

Sorry getting off topic, there a thread for this?

Judging by some of the comments on here, Rudan has somehow been secretely injected into the NIx by the Gallops of the world to raise the bar for the squatter owners or instigate a transfer of license ownership to Auckland.

Once upon a time there was a Fox commentator who desperately wanted to grow up to be an A league coach but none of the big bad Australian teams would give him a chance.

So he left his home and family and went far across the seas to coach the A league imposter Wellington Phoenix.

His dream was coming true not only that he was able to get some seemingly impossible results out of the perennial stragglers.

Suddenly the Australian A league teams thought just maybe this guy is worth a shot.

At the same time he suddenly realises his family arnt with him and the Phoenix really arnt what he thought they were.

So maybe its time to head back from whence he came.

Na fairy tales dont come true.

Wow.....so many theories here!

Maybe Rudan is expressing what 100% of all coaches would be saying at this point. And I suspect that most of them would be even angrier than Rudan.

What pro coach would not be spitting tacks now?  At a vital stage of the season against a close rival their team has a home game. Except they face a three+ hour international flight plus all the pre flight post flight stuff to play in another city in another country in another time zone. While the away team get a gentle 30 minute bus ride from their homes.

Of all the frequent cockups made by Phoenix mumpet management this would have to be the worse. Rudan is the coach, he gets it in the neck if his team loses. He knows his young team is fatigued. Yet they get this schedule thrown at them...for a "home game""....by their own management.

100% behind Rudan on this one

Yeah, some interesting alleys this thread has travelled down. Personally, I've got no issue with the points that Rudan has raised, but the cynic in me just finds it interesting that he has chosen to raise them publicly after a defeat. He's known about this game for as long as everybody else has, so why not air his concerns earlier? As I said before, one win from our last seven games and everyone is talking about this stuff rather than our recent form. Doesn't take away from the validity of what he's said but I'm not sure it's particularly bizarre that some of us are wondering if there's some deflection going on. Anyway, onwards and upwards to the play-offs. #COYN

Well he's certainly spent a night in the cells, like many a young man - though his circumstances a bit different to most.

Interesting that him and Corica go way back.
