Should've been a penalty. Torpor went for the trip well after the ball was past and even though Fabiano has good diving pedigree there was contact enough to bring him down.

I think Fabiano dived in the box, good call from the ref. Haliti had some good touches, and of course the goal. Ii get the impression he thinks a lot of himself though....

Bollocks!! Torpor stuck his arm out, but his feet were in no position to trip Fabiano, and Fabiano clearly took a dive.

I expect to see Fabiano's performance get a rating by the review committee (a 6/10 for the dive, a 7/10 for the performance afterwards, and a 2 match bench seat for the effort)

Dave, the low crowds is an issue though, can't keep expecting the owners to fund the league out of their own pockets

Normo's coming home

If a defender thrusts out his leg intentionally at an attacker when the ball is already past him and the attacker almost so, and makes contact with his foot as Topor-S clearly did, then he can hardly be surprised if the ref blows for a penalty.

Topor-S's expression showed he was surprised that Beath didn't blow for a penalty.

Clearly? The only thing that was clear about the incident, was Fabiano's dive.

I would agree with you if Topor had stuck both boots in, but the most he did was put his arm out and Fabiano did the rest.

He stuck his leg out quite clearly and clipped Fabiano's ankle.  Not much contact, but if your beaten and stick your leg out and clip the guy, its hard to call it a dive.  Yes the arm was just a brush, but if you look lower, there was leg aswell.

What a terribly boring game I have to say.

Melbourne are so incredibly one dimensional it really is a joke that they are the champions of this league. All they do is play in straight lines - pass up to Thompson / Fabiano, they run straight, take a shot - that is the general basis of their play, and this season it just isn't working!

15,000 is a bad crowd for them, and it's a laugh to think that they didn't want to move to that new stadium because it was only '30,000' capacity or so!

Let's just say Fabiano 'made the most of it' and if he'd have just gone down normally rather than throwing himself down like an idiot, he might've got the penalty.

The Fabiano incident was a clear foul - TS tripped him. If that had happened on the halfway-line, it'd be given as a foul 100 out of 100 times. But Fabiano's delayed fall didn't help his cause, although he was clearly fouled and should have got a penalty.

More generally, what a sorry excuse for a game of football that was.

Fabiano made it look like a dive, that was his problem.

Should've been booked if the ref thought it was a dive though.

Should Melbourne move their games to be played elsewhere??

15k in a stadium that holds over 80k, it looked awfully empty. i have wondered how we'd look if we played at the Basin or Porirua Park sometimes. You know, where the fans are right on top of the field just about. instead of a 100 yards away from it all.

and didn't that pitch look appalling? AFL, league, Football markings everywhere as well as sponsors logos and the obvious spots where cricket blocks have been laid.

Last nights game looked tacky at best with all that going on. Just my humble opinion. A strange game playingwise. It deserved a draw, both teams had their chances, Melbourne more than enough to grab all three points.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

I think that stadium holds 65,000 but I take the point. Yeah I remember thinking what a mess the pitch looked last night too, terrible stuff!

I would also rather play in a rectangular stadium than a round one - it really is much better being right at the side of the pitch, or behind the goal, when watching football.

Stadium holds 55K.

AFL Finals Series Week 1 this weekend. There are 6 teams involved in the 4 Matches, with 2 All Melbourne finals being played in Melbourne...

15K crowd to watch Noocastle on a Thursday night during footy finals week = not too bad IMO!

As for moving their games LG, they have a brand spanking new stadium to play in from next season! And yes its a rectangle!

I know - good for Melbourne, doesn't help Phoenix much though

Had to LOLz a bit at the result. Thought that Mebourne should take it away with no Vignaroli, how wrong I was. Just long shots all over the show, none remotely on target. Celeski's injusry at the start didn't look particularly fun, Haliti looked up there and up himself, penalty- hmm, was a foul but Horse Fabio didn't help himself by diving. The Stabbers should have put the game away early on in the show.

All in all, sh*t game of football.
