After the 4-0 thumping from Central Coast Mariners at Etihad Stadium on Saturday night, Victory and Moss have conceded 22 goals from 14 games this season to be easily on pace for Melbourne's worst defensive performance.
While the 20 goals conceded in 21 games en route to the 2007 championship was a brilliant performance, Victory's worst effort of allowing 29 goals during the 2008 campaign is now clearly in sight, just as Moss is an obvious target of unhappy home fans.
Signed from Wellington Phoenix this year, Moss has not yet won over Victory fans, who heaped more scorn on him during the loss to the Mariners as the New Zealand international could probably be faulted for two of the four goals.
<!-- // .story-sidebar -->If Victory coach Ernie Merrick is considering dropping Moss for Langerak it would not be a surprise, but Merrick yesterday refused to blame the goalkeeper for the defeat.
"Glen has played well for us and is one of the reasons why we are sitting second on the table," Merrick said.
"Sometimes there are newly signed players that the crowd does not take to, but they always prove themselves in the long-term, like Danny Allsopp and Matthew Kemp and Carlos Hernandez.
"We persevere with people. Glen didn't have a great game, but he wasn't the only one.
"We don't put that game down to the goalkeeper. It's about creating more from midfield and scoring goals, which we didn't do."
Victory had chances to score with Archie Thompson, Sutee Suksomkit and Ney Fabiano failing to beat in-form Mariners goalkeeper Danny Vukovic.
The size of the scoreline, coupled with the 3-0 home loss to Sydney FC a month ago, underlined Victory's struggles at Etihad Stadium, but Merrick, who has signed a two-year contract extension, does not see poor home results as an obstacle to winning the championship.
"It's not particularly a great concern," Merrick said.
"You've got to put it into context. Of our last 10 we've lost two and before last night we'd played nine and lost one.
"At home we like to attack, but if we don't score then we're going to be on the back foot.
"Home and away we have to improve. We've scored a lot of goals, but we can't let anyone off for a game like that. If we don't score, then we've got to take more risks and the defence gets exposed. It was disappointing."
With next weekend off for a FIFA break, Victory could be boosted by the return from injury of several players, including Robbie Kruse, Nick Ward and Evan Berger, for the November 21 clash with Brisbane Roar.

While Mossy didn't have a great game I seem to remember he made a couple of pearlers aswell. Some blame needs to be put on the defenders in front of him but he is still one of the best shot stoppers in the league. I hate to buy in to what Pastys biggest fan has been going on about for months but maybe Mosses organisational skills aren't the best however I would still say he is one of the better keepers in the league and I would almost give my left foot to have him available for the AWs this weekend.

IT IS shaping as a good news-bad news week for Melbourne Victory goalkeeper Glen Moss.
Assured by New Zealand coach Ricki Herbert that he would go with the All Whites to the World Cup despite being suspended for the first two games of the tournament, Moss may be sacked for tomorrow night's game at Brisbane Roar.
Under the microscope after the 4-0 home loss to Central Coast took Victory's goals-against tally to 22 in 14 games, Moss has probably been harshly judged by the terrace critics during his first season with the club.
But coach Ernie Merrick seems to have pondered dropping Moss in favour of youngster Mitch Langerak, who has played four A-League games.
Asked about the goalkeeping situation yesterday, Merrick danced around the topic but seemed to hint Moss could be axed.
"It's a consideration for all the players when you're thinking of giving some a rest," he said.
"We've got a good squad with players coming back. If you look at what clubs do internationally, there's a time where (outfield) players get dropped and they're very good players and it's no different for the goalkeeper.
"I won't postulate on who's going to be in the team. I'm not going to give anything away. We've played 14 games and we're second-top and Glen has been a major part of that."
While Merrick always warns not to read too much into the line-ups in training games, it was perhaps telling yesterday that Langerak faced the first-team attack, which is usually the situation for the first-team goalkeeper.
The return of Robbie Kruse and/or Nick Ward might mean a return to the bench for speedy forward Mate Dugandzic, while holding midfielder Leigh Broxham could also be sacrificed to add an extra attacking player.
Thai pair Surat Sukha and Sutee Suksomkit will fly from Bangkok directly to Brisbane after Thailand's Asian Cup qualifiers against Singapore (a 3-1 away win and 1-0 home loss). Both are expected to feature in the game, with Merrick declaring Suksomkit a starter.
Right back Sukha should help a defence that has exposed Moss, who should not carry all the blame, according to captain Kevin Muscat.
"As soon as there is adversity, individuals get pulled out and it's unfair to solely criticise the goalkeeper," Muscat said.
"The defensive line has got to take a lot of responsibility and, as a team, we've got to defend better."
GOLD Coast United says it will punish Brazilian midfielder Robson after he was charged with drink-driving on Monday.
The 23-year-old was returning from a night out with friends and club chief executive Clive Mensink said Robson had accepted full responsibility for his actions.
"He will fully accept the punishment handed down by the courts and the club will also be issuing its own sanction," Mensink said.
As the way it is though, fans are more likely to be critical of players rather than sing praise.
Moss has been off form for the past few games. but come on, Losing 4-0 to CCM isn't his f**king fault. Take a look at the teams performance. Melbourne were shocking, passing was off. Thompson (who by the way, is 2nd in off target shots this season with 30 something) is a poacher, and against the Mariners, is not what you want.
They rely on free kicks more now. And Hernandez even though he is an awesome free kick taker, is not going to hit the target 100% of the time.
I think that Mossy is becoming a bit of a scapegoat for Melbourne.
It could also have something to do with being second on the table behind Sydney.
"f**k you Melbourne Victory, Ole! Ole!"

Sorry if ive offended. I just think that this Mossy thing is pretty stupid
Normo's coming home
Huh? Im not saying to replace moss.
I hope this rest isn't a long one
Normo's coming home

I honestly think it's a massive risk to be taking him regardless of whether he's Melb's first choice or not, unless of course his ban is turne over, which seems unlikely to me.
One of Paston and Bannantyne gets injured and can't play the first/second game, then during the game the remaining keeper gets injured or sent off, suddenly it'll be say... Boyens in goal.
Ah. I see your point now.
Yeah. Moss over Bannatyne.
Mossy also wont be dropped into youth league. Especially when there is a place on the bench.
Unless you are saying he will drop that far. Which he won't.
Thats Elrich Territory nowStefan2009-11-21 00:59:38

I'd put most of the blame on the rest of the team for that. They were absolutely lacklustre and exposed him terribly at the back. Only so much a keeper can do with defence like that.

Why is that worse than being dropped into the Youth team?
It doesn't mean you drop off the radar. Nicky Mrdja still gets starting sport every once and a while. And DanningStefan2009-11-21 01:07:31
I wouldn't say that around Melbourne mate.
