North Qld under the radar?

A lot of the talk has been about Gold Coast, with their money and the class players they have signed (i.e Smeltz)
The only thing thats really been out there is that Brockie has moved there and Robbie Fowler maybe becoming their marquee. Jade North was going to be their marquee before he signed with Incheon of South Korea.

Their coach for their debut season will be CCM assistant coach Ian Ferguson.

The players they have picked up for their 2009/10 squad are

Justin Pasfield (GK) from Newcastle Jets.
Paul Kohler (DF) from New Castle Jets
Robbie Middlebly (DF) from Sydney F.C
Jacob Timpano (DF) from Sydney F.C
Beau Busch (DF) from Sydney F.C
  Chris Tadrosse(DF) from CCM
Fred Agius (M) from Adelaide City
  Chris Grossman(M) from Queensland Roar
  Jason Spagnuolo(M) from Adelaide United
  Ufuk Talay(M) from Avispa Fukuoka
  Martin Vaas(M) from ????sydney?
Darko Tasevski (M) from PFC Levski Sofia
Brendon  Santalab (F) from Sydney F.C
Jeremy Brockie (F) from Team Wellington?
  James Robinson (F) from Perth.

North Queensland are also reportedly in talks with Socceroo player, Scott Chipperfield,Leicester City goalkepper Paul Henderson and Sydney FC goalkeeper Clint Bolton.

I don't know what you think, but they seem to be a putting together a rather tidy side, they should be very competitive.

North Queensland will be my second-favourite Aussie team (based solely on the fact that they have a Kiwi in their ranks) next season.

and Gold Coast most hated?

Indeed.

It is a 'tidy' squad, but unless they get some of the big signings like Chippers and Fowler (or even pick up other off-contract A-Leaguers) then they are almost certainly going to be somewhere around the bottom (exact placing depends on the extent of NJ's epics fail and if Perth continue to improve).

Yeh no doubt they will sign a couple big players, but that whole Fowler thing is just a big fiasco

1-year signing only for Chippers please, Furries. Chippers is going to South Coast as soon as the A-League realises how badly it needs more 'gong

Today.....

North Queensland have called a press conference for 11am AEST "regarding Robbie Fowler''. And Fury boss Don Matheson sounded quietly confident on Tuesday night that they would get their man.

"If we weren't confident we were a good show we wouldn't have started the talks in the first place and wasted everyone's time,'' he said. "We always had confidence in our process.''

It appears definite and we will know in about 10 minutes

Yess God and white line fever!

An amazing coup for the Fury and A-League as a whole.

That's hard to read.

Don't think he'll perform. They've got him for the Liverpool-fan attraction only.yomcat2009-02-04 14:32:10

Well with already having Central Coast, and Gold Coast...another Coast is getting a bit much

Why can't they just be called Wollongong?

Man o man,I thought this deal was going to fall through, hopefully he isnt a flop like who ate all the pies El**ch.

Wollongong? That's South of Sydney. Closest team is the Bling

Not our fault Australia has a lot of Coasts. NZ has a lot of Bays

The reason is marketing - trying to appeal to a larger fanbase:
Wollongong - 280K
Illawarra - 409K
South Coast - 500K

IMHO, Wollongong is a terrible idea for a name as it only covers a small area. It's fine for the Hawks, Wolves and Eagles, who draw small crowds - but not for top-level, large-capacity sports like footy and league.

Illawarra can be gotten away with, but I do see the appeal in the broader South Coast name (mostly personal bias tbh - I'm from just outside the Illawarra). Personally I like "South Coast-Illawarra FC", but that might be a bit too long...

I do get your point though, and it has been brought up on the SCFC forums

 just because of fowler?
Permalink Permalink
about 17 years ago · edited over 13 years ago

nah, not just because of fowler. I'm a Man U fan and still consider him to be amazing  Brockie, Spagnuolo, and Santalab are all underrated youngsters who I like and will enjoy seeing them get the break they need. Also, any fierce rival of the Roar is a friend of mine.

Both have serious injury concerns and have yet to prove themselves as week in and week out A-League players.

Why does everyone love Santalab? He's scored some stunners but there must be a reason he doesn't start for Sydney.

The SMH is reporting here today that Luis Corrales has had "interest" from NQ as well. Was he ever on the Phoenix radar?

Check both the Team Wellington thread (in NZFC) and the Transfer thread (in the Phoenix forum) both have discussion on Luis.

McBreen signed I see- he trialled with us for a while last year right? Not good enough for Nix, similar to Brockie (who never trialled but we could have picked him up and never did). Some disparity in the quality of the squad-  Fowler, Felipe--------------------------->McBreen, Brockie

You'd need a pretty sh*t radar for that to go 'under' it. Hope the pitch still has the structural integrity it had when Jardel and El**ch were playing.
