Oval Ball codes trouble with FFA Bid

Reading a few different stories today that the AFL especially and the NRL to a lesser extent are not happy about the way FFA have worked the bid for the World Cup. Not enough consultation and concern about 2 months in the middle of the season where basically every ground is out.

Smh, stuff and NZheralrd all have stories on it today. What are peoples thoughts?

If FFA haven't consulted well then it is their own stupid fault yet I think a bit of it might be scare mongering, especially from Demetriou and some of the Queensland NRL guys.

Does anyone know what South Africa are doing about Currie Cup next year? One of the articles says that no other sports tournaments/codes (im guessing they have to be major) can be played at host venues when games are on.

One article does suggest though that the entire Origin series could be played in NZ, get in!

Interesting to get peoples thoughts on this.

FFA has been consulting for about the last couple of years, AFL scaremongering and posturing for power.  Not sure it will have much effect on the Currie cup, don't know how many multi-purpose venues are being used.  A lot (I think, could be wrong here) are soccer specific.

Yeah I realise that but one of those articles says that no other major sporting fixtures can take place in host cties on game days, guess you can get around it with clever scheduling.

There's talk of the Australian Federal gov enacting legislation to tell the other codes to GTF during the WC anyway.

When Hibs, went up, to win the Scottish Cup - I wisnae there - furfuxake!

Im not sure that would be politically sensible, there are enough people in the backwaters of Qld, Victoria and NSW who would be pissed off by that move that it could be electoraly dangerous.

Yet to read a convincing argument as to why the AFL should give a flying whatsit about the WC. I can't think of one thing Soccer does to help AFL.

NRL largely the same, I guess the FFA are hoping they see the greater good bigger picture but they are under no obligation to do so.

Issue on this one seems to be that FFA have said other codes will have to be on hold for around two months. AFL now claiming it wilil be more like four months because of preperation etc...

I back FFA. I'd hope they'd know more about how long the preperation of stadiums will take than some AFL dude.

The various media orgs here with an interest in both the oval codes are really pouring on the negativity of a successful WC bid. Portraying themselves as under siege from an un-democratic outside world body, pushing the majority of Oz sports lovers around in their own country.
FFA don't inspire me in diplomacy though.

(copy/paste from another thread)

From what I've read, the NRL has been a bit more co-operative - more along the lines of "The FFA put forward a proposal, we don't like it, but we're meeting them this week anmd we'll discuss other options"

Meanwhile, the AFL have chosen to spread misinformation to try and turn the public against real football.

(Then again, I'm from NSW so I may be biased when it comes to the eggball codes )

The AFL is more at risk though - NRL matches can be moved much easier. Even without the Warriors they could get some decent crowds in NZ, maybe in the Pacific Islands and PNG. There'd be problems surrourding Origin, but hopefully that can be sussed. Auckland has talked about bidding to host an Origin match at Eden Park, perhaps 2022 would be a good year for that to happen? Whereas pretty much nobody outside of MelbourneAustralia cares about AFL and thus wouldn't turn up. Ireland is pretty much the only country that could generate interest but they don't have the oval stadia.

It's just Andrew Demetriou (AFL CEO) wanting to grab media space during the AFL off-season.

There's Government money behind the World Cup bid, Demetriou will be told to f..k off (or legislated to f..k off) should Australia be successful in getting a World Cup.

There was good publicity for soccer here last week(i.e. Nicole Kidman joining bid and the World Cup draw) so the AFL had to respond.

Valeo thinks I hate AFL, but I don't it's knobhead adminstrators like Demetrious that I don't like. If in doubt, check out the court case here ion Oz about the pay TV channel C7, where Channel 7 (current co-broadcaster of AFL here) bought out the NSL rights to 'strangle' soccer. The documents came out in the C7 court case.

All good, just a battle for media space here.

Balanced ?  Sorry, I'm out.

Some Aus forums have some extensive threads on it.  The classic being Seven once admitting to buying NSL rights (when they had AFL rights) just to make sure no one else got them who would actually show them.

Sky doing the same with A-League earlier in the season?

He's a lot of a cock - who happens to have done a pretty good job of growing AFL from one and two bits of a state to the closest thing to a national sport with half decent crowd attendances (ie: that the FFA would kill for) and the most expensive (from memory) telly rights package in Awestrayan sport.

The fact however does remain, he's a cock.

Major = large events.  I know they like to think they are, but AFL and NRL are not major events.  Pretty sure baseball continued during WC94

Would you say a game with 80,000 spectators counted as a 'large' event?

Another interesting article, I would be keen to learn more about the Media Interests in Aus around the AFL and NRL and the way they dig at Football. If someone could bring a balanced position to that argument it would be wonderful.

News Limited have a 50% stake in the NRL< so naturally the News Limited papers and TV are not going to bag the NRL (see some of Phil Rothfield s work for the Daily Telegraph in Sydney as proof.

For years, the media (the Herald Sun in Melbourne have been big supporters of the AFL/VFL for years) have been pro-AFL.

Check Mike Sheenans article below on the Melbourne vs Adelaide semi-final from February 2007 of anti-soccer bias.

http://www.heraldsun.com.au/news/soccer-just-too-ho-hum/story-e6frfbro-1111112946158

Also check the website below for a database of anti-soccer articles written by the Australian media over the years. If you ask the boys there nicely, they may include a NZ section for the same matter,

www.vulgar.com.au/libero/002/das002.html

The anti-soccer bias in the mainstream media over here is something that a few of us have been fighting for a few years. Its hard work.
