Harsh.

And Engelaar gets tossed. I don't think I have an issue with that. Not the most forceful you will see but it's studs in the middle of the leg.

Was a foul, but straight red, I don't think so.

Yep, on initial view I thought harsh (if I was a Heart fan I would have been apoplectic), on review quite reckless & dangerous, and decision justified.

Edit: Yep was to JV.  Close call either way.

He's unlucky. We've all seen tackles every bit as bad as that this season not even get the player a yellow card.

Nice one Redmayne. Heart duly doomed.

It is the inconsistency that pisses me off. (and I'm sure the players)

As for that tackle on Ramsay towards the end of the first half..... goodness me. I've seen penalties given for less than that. The ball kept rolling in the direction Ramsay was running, so clearly no ball contact when he was brought down in the penalty box.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Engelaar wasn't unlucky. He buried his studs halfway up the leg. Clear red card and Gillet got that 100% correct.

Saw two replays of it but it was really hard to tell whether Carle actually clipped him or not. Might have been too much doubt in the ref's mind to give it.

I think that's the main problem, the lack of consistency which really does imply that we have seen yellows given for similar.

I guess from a different point of view, putting myself in the players shoes from both sides, would you be happy for that to be a benchmark for a yellow. Be a bloody high benchmark and you'd have WW3 (which looks like it's breaking out) with just yellow cards. I don't think I'd want to be on the receiving end

I thought the Sydney player got a very slight touch first on the penalty call

Not for the first time this ref has controversy this year

Haven't seen the red yet, but based on this it looks like a red.

It's really messy, considering Sydney have a numerical advantage and the relative quality of the players on the park (both teams).

Yeah, it was a clear red card. Anyone who say's it should've just been a yellow is showing their lack of understanding of the LotG.

It's a potential leg breaker.

Maybe not this season so much but Gillett was of course the man at the centre of the last-minute penalty controversy in the final in 2012.

I'm not sure if you watched it live at normal speed.  Didn't seem that bad when watched at game pace from initial TV angle (the tackle itself didn't seem that forceful).  Referee saw it from a different angle and got it right

Let's not get overexcited. Even the few dissenting voices (ignoring the obviously moronic Robbie Slater) aren't saying it wasn't a crude tackle, only that the likes of Zadkovich, etc, routinely seem to go unpunished when they commit this type of foul. There was clearly no evil intent in Engelaar's tackle, he just got it horribly wrong and was unlucky the game was being officiated by a ref who knows his LotG, whatever that is!

And wasn't Engalaar kind of turning around to the ball so he didn't see what was coming?

No intent? Next you are going to say he was going for the ball. I read that other thread that intent is well gone now days and they look at a whole bunch of other stuff.

Do you see the ball in that image? How can you say no intent when the ball is not even there to be played at.

Granted its not the worst red card you will ever see in your life but thats still a leg breaker.

Edit: I can't find the bloody thread damn it but a ref was posting something about it. The search function needs fixing.

I'm just bitter that there's no longer a massive unit charging around the pitch.

There are more than enough massive tools on that pitch if it helps.

yeah he had a mare earlier this season. Something like 3 or 4 reds in the game and he only gave one. Then they have the head of referees in the media saying 'yeah he was shit' the day later
