Awful from Mullen to let Thompson stroll around him like that. Adelaide should've had this wrapped up ages ago.

Leckie has had more shots than all of Heart, but still 2-2

By now the Fever would be chanting "You don't know what you're doing"

Flores can do some great things but I re-iterate, asking for a card for another player is a c**t of a thing to do.

While I don't know the situation here I think it's sometimes more than justified.  Though aren't players meant to be cautioned for that or did I dream it?

Two very pretty passes there: the first by Leckie, the second Flores and Bolton is nutmegged agin.

Why don't we produce kids like Leckie and Ramsay ?

We don't even see fast strong players with a great touch turning up in the NZFC let alone of A-League quality.

I'd say because most of the pitches are arse compared to Australia?

It's hard to play fast on a bog compared to the dirt tracks they have over there

By the same token though, playing on a patchy grassless dustbowl is hardly a recipe for great control.  The surfaces at most A-League grounds in Aus are sh*t let alone a subruban park with no water.

More players, better systems

Even the lowest of the low VicSoccer league here is organised better than the rep team stuff in Welly

Well either way, it won't happen on Naenae 1 ;)

Good finish, good to see Heart scoring goals.

More players I'll grant you, but even then as a percentage we should produce 1 to their 10 and we don't.  I've heard plenty of complaints about the quality of some competitions there, but more than that, at the rate they charge for everything it's hardly surprising they are better run.

The truth though is those things only enhance that player, the natural skills need to be there and we don't have them at that age.  Maybe we need to make the NZFC an amateur Under-21 competition to make sure they get the chance and focus every cent on it (no I don't think that is a real solution).

If Adelaide can shore up their defence and get Travis Dodd back in they could be right up there come playoff time. Honestly, watching them play that sort of attacking footy with Leckie up front is very refreshing when you think how they've been playing in the last year.

imo all of the migrants help as well - i'm just playing in a Sunday league but I've seen some ridiculous skill from the Asian/African kids. Raises the level, no doubtvaleo2010-08-21 00:07:31

Oz has got a lot more money to chuck at their young talent too.

It's probably a bit unrealistic to compare Leckie with young NZ players anyway. He is an outstanding talent even by Australian standards.

HN, the solution is, IMO, technical coaching at a young age. We just rely on the natural kids to be good enough as they progress through the ages without actually coaching them properly. I said it in another forum about how NZF can improve the quality here but not a lot of discussion came from it. As far as I know there are f all technical coaching programs for juniors in NZ.

I think the problem is that (a) there is very little elite coaching below the age of 16/17 (they undeniably have better coaching and better organisation) and (b) better players here have less competition so they don't get pushed and (c) many of our best athletes will go to Rugby (big, strong and fast).

True I was in the Hawkesbay team up until high school when i quit.  i went and played rugby till 6th form. Then in 7th form i decided i was going to play football again and trialed for the NBHS 1XI and made the squad.

I think the focus has to be on elite coaching at a young age but it has to be fun and not forceful. The reason i quit was because the started to make these compulsary summer training camps and being a rep cricketer it was interferring in my summer sports.

Also the fact that there was no football regulary on T.V so there was no one to aspire to be. Compared to someone like Stephen Flemming for example.

Thats why its important to build the game more in the media over here.

Speaking of which, if you're using firefox, there's this pretty good addon that you can get called FootieFox which shows game times auto updates scores for a whole bunch of different leagues.

You choose your timezone and it converts all the games to local time. Like this:
