Victory have Honda, so that rules them out. Sydney would probably aim higher, so maybe the Jets? Could always be CCM taking a punt. That is

Melbourne City are leaving no stone unturned in their quest for a new striker, with Brisbane Roar’s Adam Taggart now on the radar to replace banished Bruno Fornaroli.

The Fornaroli-Andy Keogh trade has reached an impasse, with City telling the Uruguayan that he is free to join any A-League club except Perth.

Fornaroli has been shopped around to other A-League clubs, but a Taggart swap is not on the cards.

Hopes of an overseas sale are fading amid lukewarm interest in Fornaroli from Japan, with City needing to do the deal before the A-League transfer deadline of January 31 to be able to sign a replacement.

Fornaroli’s preference is to stay here, with his Australian citizenship imminent.

So when does CCM jump in to offer to take Bruno off City's hands for peanuts?

Derbyshire has a long term contract, not sure a 32 yr old player would give that up for a 6 month deal. So it seems unlikely that it is him.

"We've got a player coming over from the UK who'll be here Tuesday and that will bolster the ranks," Mulvey said after their 1-1 draw with Brisbane Roar on Sunday.

"And then we're pretty close with one or two other defensive options."

Socceroos striker Jamie Maclaren is edging closer to joining Melbourne City after the Asian Cup to replace outcast Bruno Fornaroli.

City are understood to have overcome their salary cap squeeze by negotiating a heavily back-ended deal for former Brisbane Roar marksman Maclaren.

Midfielder Osama Malik is the latest player to depart City, sealing a move to Saudi Arabia.

Malik’s exit opens up a second spot in the roster after Scot Michael O’Halloran departed, plus further salary cap space.

Malik, who joined City in January 2016 from Adelaide United in a trade for Stefan Mauk, is City’s longest serving current player behind Fornaroli.

City have also sounded out Andrew Nabbout and current Roar centre-forward Adam Taggart, but Maclaren is the most feasible option, despite some issues still needing to be thrashed out before Germans Darmstadt release him.

Maclaren will be inside the salary cap this season, before transitioning into City’s new $1 million-a-year marquee man from June, in a multi-year deal.

Manchester-based chief Brian Marwood negotiated the deal, with an Aaron Mooy-esque City Football Group pathway plotted for Maclaren, 25, who has scored nine goals in 38 games with Darmstadt and Scots Hibernian in the last 18 months.

City are hoping that Maclaren replicates his Roar strike rate of 43 goals in 59 games.

Maclaren, currently at the Asian Cup, could be available for as few as 10 A-League games.

He told Fox Sports that a move was imminent.

“There is something happening for the future but for now it’s all about this (Asian Cup),’’ Maclaren said.

“I’ve always enjoyed my football in the A-League I’ve scored 51 goals (with Roar and Perth Glory) and I’m so proud of my achievements there. I watch every game and keep tabs on the league which is growing all the time.”

Adelaide United’s star performer Craig Goodwin is tipped to join one of East Asia’s biggest league clubs this month, leaving coach Marco Kurz’s side in a precarious position as the Reds fight for the championship.

Goodwin, 27, is understood to be close to securing a transfer deal during this current FIFA transfer window, eight months after returning to the Reds following a two-year stint with Holland’s Sparta Rotterdam.

A club spokesman said today the Reds have had no interest from any clubs in regard to Goodwin.

His transfer fee could see the club earn about $450,000 from the pending sale — the amount believed to be written in his outclause when he penned a three-year deal last year.

Clubs from Japan’s J-League, China’s Super League and South Korea’s K-League have all shown interest in the Reds key performer.

Goodwin has scored 12 goals in 19 matches and been credited with four assists in the A-League and FFA Cup this season.

He was tipped to rejoin his former Victorian Oakleigh Cannons coach Arthur Pappas in Japan.

Pappas is former Socceroos coach Ange Postecoglou’s assistant at Yokohama F Marinos.

Postecoglou gave Goodwin Socceroos game time after he made his debut under former German Australia coach Holger Osieck in 2013.

It was also believed Sanfrecce Hiroshima, where ex Melbourne Victory striker Besart Berisha has been playing since last year, had Goodwin on its radar.

However, a Japanese soccer official, who wished to remain anonymous claimed: “It’s not Hiroshima that’s after him,’’ he said.

“Instead it could be a South Korean club, it could be Suwon (Bluewings).”

J-League clubs from this season no longer have limits as to how many foreigners can be signed but only five can be listed on an official match day team sheet.

Chinese Super League clubs can register six imports, all allowed on match day team sheets.

The K-League can register four imports per club.

The current FIFA transfer window of China closes February 28, Japan on March, 29 and South Korea closes on March 22.

Australia’s closes on January 31.

Goodwin is looming to be the second player to leave Adelaide during the A-League’s transfer window.

Taylor Regan left the Reds earlier this month, paying his own $50,000 transfer fee to join Malaysia’s Selangor.

Adelaide’s former German attacking midfielder Daniel Adlung was keen to return to United during this transfer window but talks are no longer progressing.

Kurz also intimated a striker and centre back were atop of his transfer window wishlist this month but it appears the German has not been given a budget from his club’s superiors to even consider which players to sign.

It’s understood winger Nikola Mileusnic had all but secured a new club next season as young striker Aposotolos Stamatelopoulos edges closer to becoming a signing for new A-League team Western Melbourne.

Isaac Richards was also on the new Victorian club’s radar but unless the Red release him from his contract it appears the goalkeeper will stay put.

Losing Goodwin would be a huge setback for Adelaide. They are a very solid outfit but without him and a striker they are going to struggle to make an impact.

What ever happened to Bruce Djite? Rumours before Xmas said he had all but secured an A League gig but that appears to have gone belly up.
