Think the two they signed today used up the import spots.

I'm guessing one of two things:

1) He failed his medical exam and thirty pieces of silver wasn't enough to bribe the team doctor, or
2) Mrs Smeltz showed up and decided she hated the place

That, or 3) Rumour is wrong

He didn't want the Missus and the kids over there.

and so Smeltzy managed to piss more people off!
I wonder how long he'll stay with Gold Coast now? 1 week? 2 weeks?

Nothing wrong with that. If the family is not going to be happy, then you might as well flag it.

Quite right. Smeltz's wife seems to cop a lot of abuse round here based on nothing more than hearsay and speculation, which I suppose is sour grapes over Smeltz ditching the Nix to go to Gold Coast.

I'm glad anyway because I enjoy watching him (even if it is for GCU) and he's closer to home should the AWs need him. Except that'll probably just be a handful of friendlies for the next few years....

He should have done his homework before he signed the contract - reserached Shandong (club and city), talked to people who have lived in China, clearly understood what accomodation and other facilites were going to be provided for his family etc.

You then go with your eyes open.

You also need to commit to the experience.

You don't do a runner after 5 days - he looks totally unprofessional and disrespectful to Shandong and their fans.

He looks a little foolish but by the time the season has gone a few games it wont matter.

I like watching him play so it is a bonus

To me, this, combined with the whole Turkey debacle that dropped the Phoenix management in it when he fist signed with GC, indicates that his management/advisory team is quite poor.

Good of you to be sympathetic to them  but it wouldnt be the first set of fans upset, these things happen. I remember when the Kingz had a few "top"Aussies coming and half never showed up

I reckon Smeltz read and believed all the hype about offers after the World cup, esp after scoring his goal. Then he didnt get enough / decent ones in to pick and choose from, felt he should do something but didnt think realistically or hard enough about it, and got a culture shock when he arrived there.

What he was giving up in terms of lifestyle on the Coast and scooting around in Palmers Jet (altho I think that isnt happening this year) and being able to swim at the beaches and go for a latte, and have his kids in a school where they arent any different, it wasnt worth the extra dosh, he doesnt need it enough and also I wonder if after the training sessions he had, he saw that it wasnt actually a step up football wise.

Pull the plug and outta there

Pure speculation of course but it fits in the thread

Smeltz has demonstrated a pattern of behavoiur - with respect to transfers (actual and rumoured) - that, to me, indicates someone who is not very bright or worldly repeatedly getting and acting on bad advice.

That's his business but when he starts reneging on contracts then he, in my opinion, comes up way short on the personal integrity I expect from a professional sportsman.

I don't like to see Shandong or any club being taken for a ride - players need to understand they are expected to honour contracts just as much as clubs are required to do.

He's not the first and won't be the last to renege on a contract - that doesn't make it any more acceptable.

There is a distinct possibility that he was promised certain things that weren't delivered upon as well.  Remember Plodder went to India not long ago.  He was promised things that weren't delivered so he pulled the plug pretty quickly.

This would be completely different and understandable if it is the case, but there has been no suggestion of that anywhere, only that he couldn't see his family being happy there.

Plodder apparently turned up to training and found out that he was expected to take training - so not sure what the coaching staff were up too.

Oooh, even though I despise Cold Ghost, having the All Whites' #1 striker and #1 goalie prospect for 2014 together at the same club will be rad. Imagine what GCU/Nix will be like with Paston and Mossy lining up against each other!

The Gold Coast need to make signings. If they lose Smeltz and Van Strattan then their squad is much weaker than last year. So much for this high and mighty "Real Madrid of Australia." Moss to GCU would be good for him though. Unless he lets in 6 against us!

I would take a 0-0 draw with many chances being saved by our 2 AWs keepers. Lets get 6-0 against another team, preferably Melbourne.

Funny cause he was on the teams list of headshots before the signing was announced. So everyone already knew before that.
