A yellow and a harsh word would have suffised. Was never a straight red imo.

Adding more fire to the debate, Foschini and the Victory thought the second week of the suspension could be served while Foschini was away on Oly-Roos duty, but have since found out that suspensions cannot be served while a player is on international duty. Means he can't play until Round 9 on December 3rd.

As much as I like to see the Victory squirm I find it hard to reconcile Lyall Gorman's explanation that the test for an Obvious Error application is that "no referee would have awarded even a yellow card in the circumstances" with how Nick Ward got off.
Even though the red card Nick Ward got was obviously an error surely the tackle would have deserved a yellow card and therefore would fail a test of "no referee would have awarded even a yellow card in the circumstances"? If so, how did he get off?

Because he wasn't sent off for serious foul play/violent conduct. He was sent off for DOGSO, and in this case, it was an obvious error because (don't shoot me pedants) he wasn't the last man, and no referee would adjudge that he had DOGSO'd (that just looks weird) in the circumstances.aitkenmike2011-11-16 12:12:34

But it would have still been a yellow card for stopping a counter-attack by using foul play, exactly like what Ward got yellow carded against Brisbane for, when he fouled Broich on a counter attack. I agree with TX, and I don't think the test for an obvious error should be whether or not it deserved a yellow card. This is stupid, as there is a huge difference between a yellow card tackle and a red card tackle.

The criteria for getting off is either mistaken identity (i.e. the wrong player) or wrong in law. In this case, the A League have an 'Obvious Application Error' criteria which the Victory used. With the DOGSO as mentioned above, it is wrong in law. The Foschini one is not one around wrong in law - its opinion. We all agree it was a bad tackle. Do you consider it a yellow card tackle or a red card tackle. If its a yellow card tackle then its ungentlemanly conduct (or what ever its called this day) If its a red, its serious foul play. As the referee thought it was a red card tackle, it was ticked as serious foul play. Had he been sent off for foul and abusive language, well then thats wrong in law and would have been rescinded. Do not confuse wrong in law (Nick Ward) with application error (Foschini) is what Gorman is saying.
Either way, it was a dirty tackle and he deserved to go.

If that's what Gorman is saying then it's a terribly written blog because he doesn't say that at all.
I'm not arguing against Foschini's red card being upheld, I'm just saying the FFA don't help themselves with the way they explain these decisions.

Agree he may not have used those words but that the esentialy reasoning for Nick Ward getting off. You can't give a yellow card for Dogso. Its red or nothing. Granted you would give him a yellow for deliberately stopping them attacking but thats not the same law... or is it?

Roars passing not up to scratch, but to be fair, Newcastle have chased everything and are making it hard for Brisbane.
Still reckon the Roar will come back in the second half.
