Both Perez (CCM) and Baird (Perth) have been given two-match bans for diving over the weekend.

Liam Reddy's red card has also been expunged.

Love it.

Shame the results can't be changed as both penalties got their respective sides undeserved points.

The independent Match Review Panel (MRP) - consisting of Barry Such (Chair), Simon Micallef and Alan Davidson - convened to consider the following incidents from Hyundai A-League 2010/11 Week 4:

  • The Red Card issued to Liam Reddy (Sydney FC) in or around the 71st minute of Sydney FCs match against Central Coast Mariners on Saturday. The player was issued with a R5 Red Card for "Denying the opposing team a clear goal-scoring opportunity". The MRP firstly considered an Obvious Error (Red Card) Application by the player. The Obvious Error Application was upheld and, accordingly, the Red Card is expunged from the record of the player and he is not required to serve a sanction.

  • The circumstances surrounding the penalty awarded to Patricio Perez (Central Coast Mariners) in or around the 71st minute of Central Coast Mariners match against Sydney FC on Saturday. The MRP considered whether the player had committed an act of simulation that was not detected by the referee during the match. In doing so the MRP determined that the player committed simulation and accordingly the MRP imposed a sanction of two (2) matches. This is the mandatory sanction prescribed under the A-League Disciplinary Regulations for such an offence.

  • The circumstances surrounding the penalty awarded to Michael Baird (Perth Glory) in or around the 92nd minute of Perth Glorys match against Melbourne Heart on Sunday.

You can bet refs won't be buying any dives this weekend. Good to see the league coming down hard on it, should hopefully discourage players from simulating.

I'm pretty sure Luis Garcia means where was this sort of ballsy decision from Fifa at the World Cup. Big ups to football Australia, or whoever is responsible.

is this a world football first? never heard of it happening elsewhere, and with all the media around simulation you would think you would hear if it had happened.

It is good, but will it still stop the cheats.Hope they start on shirt pulling etc, as this probably annoys players just as much. I hate it.

pull a shirt and get suspended? get a grip (lame pun). the only danger is they will have to be consistent, and itll have to be pretty clearcut if they are to hand out suspensions. but f**king great news. couldnt quite believe it when first read it.

Mariners shock at Perez ban

The Central Coast Mariners have expressed their extreme disappointment at Football Federation Australias (FFA) decision to suspend Mariners midfielder Patricio Perez for simulation following the sides 1-all draw with Sydney FC on Saturday night.

The player (Perez) is adamant that there was some sort of contact by Reddy on his trailing left leg, and we are 100% behind him, said Mariners CEO John McKay.

The club was provided footage of the incident by FFA and after reviewing it with our Football staff we are at a complete loss as to how the Match Review Panel (MRP) could come to a conclusion that there was definitely no contact.

Perez will be forced to sit out Fridays home match against Melbourne Victory and the following Friday nights fixture against Melbourne Heart, also at Bluetongue Stadium, with disciplinary regulations stating that there is no right of appeal once the MRP has handed down its decision.

Its disappointing under these circumstances that were not able to state our case, and what is even more disappointing is that Patricio has basically been branded a professional cheat without any recourse to profess his innocence, McKay said.

The Central Coast Mariners will not be making any further comment regarding this issue.

And yet sadly, the most controversial issue of the season so far, K Mc**t admitted he took a dive to get Akoto a red card had absolutely no follow-up from the FFA.

While I am surprised they did this, I will wait to see that they continue in this fashion, so they're not just pandering to Aussie media whingers and eggball diehards.

sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, Ifill got a yellow when it was Big Mac that fouled a Roar player? that should get overturned?

Or did i have too many lagers on Friday night

I think that was for dissent, rather than the foul.

Terra got pulled back, its not clear cut, which is the standard it has to be if you are handing out retrospective bans.

Baird however wasnt even close to being touched, its brilliant to see him being suspended for it.

It is one concern ive voiced about it,inconsistency. You would have to go through every foul etc to be consistent.

Another is you would hate to hand bans to players who legitimately fell, therefore it has to be absolutely clearcut and no contact, like Bairds or:

But these 2 concerns are outweighed by the blight of diving in the game that has gotten out of control. So something has to be done, and I applaud the FFA for leading the way in doing this.

A sad day for football. How the heck can Perez get banned when that Melbourne Heart guy simulated in the box for a penalty even worse?

The Perth dude obviously dived and deserved it. But to roll out inconsistent bans is a blight on the game. Shame on you A-League.

I'm always iffy about this type of thing as there's every chance you can trip over yourself under no pressure at all.  I've done it many times.  Highly embarassing, even more so on a football pitch in front of thousands of people (or several dozen in the case of the Gold Coast) and I'm sure there's been cases of penalties being awarded when this has happened and players have been happy to get the penalty not so much due to the goalscoring opportunity, rather it means they won't look like quite so much of a muppet.  Not saying this is the case here, but it's an issue without a doubt.

Rescinding Liam Reddy's red card is a disastrous decision, btw.  Moss is my number 1 keeper in fantasy football and Necevski (Sydney's #2) is my #2 due to him costing only $2.  I'd already used my transfer when I realized that Gold Coast have a bye so I subbed out Moss, putting Necevski in thinking he'd get no gametime anyway then I hear Reddy got dismissed.  I was over the moon.  It all worked out perfectly.  Then the FFA go and do this.  Always trying to screw me over, them Aussies.

Perth Glory is shocked and disappointed with the FFA independent Match review panels (MRP) decision to suspend Michael Baird for two matches.

The club is also saddened that there is no natural justice and avenue of appeal.

Perth Glory will be seeking to explore all options.

They're joking, right?

I think this is brilliant. Diving is one thing where it must be very difficult for the referee to get right on the field, and players know this, hence they try it on.

Terra definitely was fouled, he was tugged back on the shoulder, so clear penalty.

@ Tegal, under the current rules they only need to go over incidents where a card or a penalty was awarded.

Seeing as the card has been rescinded, I think I should get my points back that I lost for Reddy's red card.

Good on the league for cracking down on divers. I didn't see either incident, but CCM's defence of their player doesn't convince me - Perez said "there was some sort of contact". SOME SORT ofcontact?? Did Reddy breathe on him? Tap him on the shoulder and ask for his phone number?

If he'd said that he'd been chopped, or that his legs had been clearly taken out, it would sound like he meant it.

Ard Righ - I agree. Noiw the precedent has been set, let's see it continue. After all, I think we've been waiting 2 seasons for a second booking for waving imaginary cards.

Get more cameras that focus closely on the players when in the box so the MRP have better evidence to define whether there is or is not definite contact. When the video refs are studying video footage in the NRL/Rugby they have 3/4 different angles and some very close shots of the play in question.

Fuck this stupid game

It is of great concern that the players themselves get absolutely no chance to tell their side of the story. It is just a bunch of FFA officials watching video footage of the incident, and that isn't right; the players get no chance to explain or even appeal, and if the panel get it wrong then a player could potentially lose income (appearance fees) unjustly, as well as restricting their practice of their trade. The PFA says that it won't take the FFA to court but will back any club that does.
