After losing Adam Griffiths to Saudi Arabian champion Al Shahab last week, United coach Miron Bleiberg knows too well that his star striker's stunning performance will attract attention worldwide.

"Smeltzy is great striker and unfortunately for us an offer will probably come some time," Bleiberg said.

"We have an arrangement and when the right offer comes we will congratulate him, he is 27 and we will not hold him back."

"It is our job to produce good players and help them through their careers."

Oh Yes Please - may the Smeltz be gone b4 the Phoenix play them -

Yep, Smeltz could quite easily be playing for a low EPL team, or Championship team who'd be pushing for the EPL.
Fair play to him, hes too good for the A-League tbh.
Should get a bloody good offer for him too if one comes.

Hopefully he goes, means he wont play against us and more importantly the better league he plays in the better he will be for the all whites.

I don't care who he plays for now, we will never see him in a Phoenix shirt again, but as long as he plays a great game for the All Whites kiwikev2009-08-16 20:19:42

Shows what he could have been like for us with a more creative midfield.

Yup, exactly... I just hope RH goes with Lia for Ferante and Brown and keeps the front 4 (betos, ifil, diego and greenacre)

Smeltz has worked really hard and to me shows what determination can do for a footballer, he will deserve making a club in the top european league.

I agree that he is best if he was to go to England look for a Championship team, wouldn't it be great for him to make a starting line up and bang in regular goals.....

Him and Nelsen could really fly the flag and break down the perception of kiwi footballers.

What if his contract has an escape clause, which Miron has stated is there? I'm not too sure on the rules of these things sorry.

the day Smeltzy will leave GC I will touch myself and then will write a delighted message with my sticky fingers on this very forum!

He actually deserved better than the A-League, with all respect for the A-League as a whole. But EPL, Championship or even the Turkish Super League have more money and possibilities to offer.
Besides, it will be awesome for the AW's!

Contract clauses have nothing to do with it, once the window is closed, everyone stays put until the next one opens (in this case in January). Only free agents can be signed in the meantime.

Just posted this in game thread but I will chuck it here aswell

GCU can offer Semltzy what we never could though and that is a quality CM who will feed him great ball, will make him a better player. But agreed I can't see him being at GCU next season, I can hardly seem him being there all of this season either but will wait and see.
McGlinchey/James aren't same class as Culina but would be magic to see him getting good quality delivery from the middle of the park as well as from Leo on the flanks for AW's

This has probably been posted elsewhere, but Smeltz has now scored more goals (8) than every other A-League TEAM after five games.

^ and I would say at least three of his goals are in the top five scored so far this season.

He might score 25 by Christmas.

Some train-spotters might correct me, but I think since that game against Wales a couple of years ago, Shane has scored 42 goals in 59 games for club and country.

I think it's 43 goals in 57 games...

13 games for the AW's - 14 goals
39 games for the Phoenix - 21 goals
5 games for GCU - 8 goals

The All Whites have played two games since the 2-2 draw with Wales that Smeltz didn't play in...the 0-2 loss to Fiji and the 0-0 draw with Botswana.

Well, even better then. A ratio just over 0.75 goals per game (or 3 goals every 4 games). Very impressive.

these are amazing stats

his goalscoring knows no bounds

and to think when he bagged those two against wales to start it all, he was unattached and not really knowing where his career was headed...

Smeltz clearly made some sort of pact with the devil that involved giving up any sense of loyalty in return for unlimited goal-scoring ability.

Love the way his agent is blatantly hawking him around for another deal after only 6 games of the season!

6 goals in 9 games: take a wild guess who won the PFA Player of the Month....

Yep, it's obvious: Jason Culina.

Same old Aussies....
