On a similar note, why is it Jason Pine's FFT blogs get on the YF front page but mine don't?
And I'm not in the mood for anyone to say its because they're sh*t.

Because we're lazy Lemon.  You know that.  It's just pot luck that any story gets up.

Not sure who had a crack, but these decisions aren't always made by the player.
Steve Price is a great example. There was no way he was going to go to Auckland because his wife was dead set against coming to NZ. What did the Warriors do? They flew her across and wined and dined her at the best places possible and worked entirely on selling Auckland to her. Price signed the next week.
Clearly Shane's decision isn't just his and not entirely football based. Fair enough

It kind of puts things in some perspective.  I am a massive Steve Price fan for all the traits and leadership he offers, let alone his playing ability... The thing I despise about this situation is that Shane said to Pignata that he hadn't signed.  It all seems a bit of a hush hush job when Gold Coast were announcing it or at least it was going through the Gold Coast media at the same time when you hope he's being honest to his current employer and at that time he's saying it's not true he has not signed.  It just seems a bit sus that he had already made the decision but was pulling Pignata's and the Phoenix's pubes in not being completely honest.

That's the disappointing aspect for me.

PS:  Are you sure Jo Price was against coming to NZ?  I know the Warriors flew her across and invited her to the player's wife's box at a game and wined and dined her, but I was not under the impression she was ever against it, she was just curious about what lifestyle she could give to her kids here.

Yep, she hated the thought of coming to NZ, to the point Price wasn't going to sign. It was the effort put in by the club to make sure his family was sold that got the best player the team has had to come here.

First they take Smeltz (which I can eventually accept - just) but now they have taken a photo of the fever zone for their website!

They now have cross a line in the sand...

Shane Smeltz has lost mana I reckon. He's 27 playing the best football of his career. So what does he do.....slopes off to some brand new club so that he can lie on the beach after training.

I would have respected him if he had gone to, say Adelaide...a top A-League team currently playing in the Asian Championship. If he had signed with them he might be playing Asian Champs next season. A chance to impress on a bigger stage....and who knows if you play well a contract with a club in the bigger, wealthierJ League.

But no...he took the beach bum choice...FFS you can spend the rest of your life hanging out at the beach after your football career is finished. I just hope he performs in a professional manner for the rest of the season with the Phoenix

Adelaide aren't playing in the ACL next year, Newcastle and CCM are.

Ok...then maybe Adelaide might be in the ACL the following year. The point though is why take the lifestyle option in mid career?

GCU could be there in two years anyway, and if you were offered a job in your hometown complete with a private jet and, as you said, the oppurtunity to lie down on the beach after training with your family being where they want to be wouldn't you take it??

Edit  - And just as an aside, I thought the GCU logo i saw yesterday was pretty bad, but I just saw this thing -  on the aleague website banner, which I could have whipped up in 10 seconds on wordart.

I'd be in favour of benching him if we actually had someone who could do anywhere near the same job.

If he keeps playing like he did last night then I'll be very pleased that he got it out in the open this week, it really does seem to be that that was the thing dragging him down in the previous few weeks

It will be sad to see Smeltz go.. but still, it will be exciting to have a new team to try and beat in the A - League..

When we verse GCU at the RoF are we gonna support Smeltz or shun him??

Why would we support an opposition player? Just like how Aussies are honorary NZers when playing for the Nix, anyone who leaves to another A-League club is a dirty cheating aussie.

So who else has the Gold Coast got?
Don't they have Felipe as well?

Felipe signed for the old proposed Gold Coast entity, not 'Palmer's Queensland Bling'.

Jess Vanstratten
Scott Higgins
Kristian Rees
Daniel Piorkowski
Zenon Caravella
Matthew Osman
James Brown (U-20 spot)
Steve Fitzsimmons
Shane Smeltz

Lots of rumours, but these seem the most likely:
Brendan Santalab
Steve Pantelidis
Adam Griffiths
Michael Thwaite
Joel Porter

From Tony's midyear report:

To that end, it would be disappointing if fans gave him undue flak or harsh treatment given his decision. I think once fans digest the news and appreciate what has happened theyll respect his decision as well and support him over the coming weeks.

in the words of the doors, it's only cos there'll never be another one like Smeltzy

what was Zenon Caravella like for the Knights?

I hate this bloody deal signing before the season ends, perhaps we need a Janurary transfer window or something.. although that could flip the A-league round entirely every year.

Are we going to be bringing in a marquee player this season?

Fred is our guest player right, so do you think we'll bringing in a marquee as well? When?
