the stream here talks about the State Leagues, for a sh.tstir, I thought I'd post a State League Story

For the third time in four years, South Melbourne has qualified for the final of the pre-season Hellenic Cup tournament after defeating rivals Heidelberg United 2-0 on Saturday.

In blustery conditions at Yarravilles McIvor Reserve, South overcame a physical opening period to control the game midway into the first half.

It wasnt until late in the half when a Joseph Keenan free-kick was nodded into the path of Gianni De Nittis by Steven ODor. With the striker open in the area, he calmly swiveled on one foot and slammed the ball past Steven Tilovski in the Heidelberg goal.

South sealed the victory and a place in the final early in the second half after a sublime turn by Fernando De Moraes culminated in the Brazilian playing an amazing twenty-five metre ball through the stagnant Heideberg back line and into the path of Keenan.

With the keeper to beat, the Englishman maintained his composure and neatly guided the ball into the back of the net.

South now looks forward to playing Bentleigh Greens in next Saturdays final, after the VPL newcomers defeated Oakleigh in a highly controversial penalty shootout.

Kick-off at The Grange Reserve is at 6pm.

Ah, Joe Keenan! Looked a good prospect as a kid at Chels. He was unlucky that Roman came in with his money when he did. He'd just started to get playing time with the first team. Glad to see he's still going.

To be fair to Joe, it has been a gradual descent. I think he played in Belgium, Holland and the SPL before he moved to South Melbourne. Having said that, I think his wife is an Aussie so maybe that contributed to his move to South Melbourne?

Good to hear about Fernando De Moraes and Steven O'Dor.  Ex-Knights and Knights-Phoenix players respectively. loyalgunner2010-02-18 17:12:02

This is the team Coveny scored over 100 goals for ain't it? Is he still playing/managing them?

It's the club, and I think he's involved there still. He had a job with Mars confectionary when he was at the club, that's why it was had to get him into the A-League when it was all re-jigged.

(I specifically remember the Mars bit when reading about this some years ago).

Coveny played his last season in 2009 and now he's the head coach for South Melbourne. Stevie O'Dor is also playing very well, solid at the back.
