People will tell you it's because we were the last team to sign a full squad at the start of the A League ie we were 'tardy'.
That's just a bullsh*t excuse for the fact that it's an offensive nickname thrown around by people who should know better.

I predict 0-0 scoreloine, some dreadful football, and finally a clean sheet for Most Glorious Nation of Tardistan.

I always thought it was a shortened word missing the "re".

Hardly. It was just a vain attempt at humour on my part.
Disappointing that X would use that example as a justification of the word (if that's what he was doing).

I'm not really sure what I was doing actually. I think I was probably just being a c**t.
I agree it's a pretty un-PC nickname though.
But definitely struggling to care too much either way.

Chefmivec,
My understanding is that it is derived from the term "F*cktard".

I remembered it mentioned how Adelaide got called The Cakes, so found it that way. There are a lot of usages of the word cake on here lol.http://www.yellowfever.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=12419

It first appeared, so I'm told, prior to the commencement of the A-League on The World Game Forum & attributed to a certain Sydney Olympic supporter.

Would you believe that Sydney Olympic supporter still has a valid login on here?
Back in the dark days of TWGF and the end of the NSL we started calling Victorians 'tards.
A shortening of the common internet (at the time) insult of "f**ktard". Some embraced. Ok. about two Victorians embraced in an effort to diffuse it. The rest objected to it and it stuck. Then victory started being a horrible bunch of Kevin Muscut like c**ts, their fans turned out to be extremly myopic and stupid, the back room staff built a siege mentality and they all acted like ... tards.
Their behaviour fitted the nickname in the eyes of the rest of the league so it took off.
"Bling" comes from Tom Doumanis, the then President of SNSW who said (when SNSW were still involved in SFC) that they wanted SFC to be the "Glamour" club. A Perth Glory fan called 'Onyx' then attached "Bling Bling" to us.
Unfortunately after the Walter Bugno/Peter Turnbull the club actively distanced it self from such shenanigans. Ironically, that's proved a bit retarded.
