All this chatter about the Kingz inspired me to look up Fred de Jong on good old Wikepedia (ever reliable) and guess what it says...

He player senior football with Mt. Wellington before moving to Australia, helping Marconi Stallions to consecutive National Soccer League titles in 1988 and 1989. De Jong then took advantage of his heritage, joining Fortuna Sittard in the Dutch Eerste Divisie. He returned to New Zealand to play domestically for Central United and later played in the A-League for the The Football Kingz.[1]

I'll bet not many people know that!!

Still have the Kingz shirt.  Along the lines of "chocolate makes my tee shirt shrink", it's a lot smaller than I remember...

I have three of the first season home strips.  The XL I wear is still big enough for two of me, in fact if there is a civil defence emergency it is the local evacuation point.

The others are a J Perry playing strip and a signed, framed one.

I was in England when the Kingz and Knights were around so I missed this Auckland football experiment. Seems to be mentioned an awful lot on these boards though...

It's important to learn from what they did right there (very little) and what they did wrong (lots).  Ignoring your past (and they are the Phoenix's past indirectly) can easily come back and bite you.

Yeah, like playing deliberately dull against an attacking team when our strikers were stuffed/injured and drawing them out for a sucker punch.

Over the weekend I was in the Dunedin rebel sport and I spied some a-league merch and there were some jandals, I thought wonder if they have any 'nix stuff but no to my surprise it was NZ Knights branded jandals instead. $14 bucks i think they were if anyone is interested

Going through some old boxes in the actic in the weekend and I came across an old Kingz supporters club newsletter.

It featured an article written by the Kingz 1st ever signing, Marcus Stergiopoulos stating he would come back to the Kingz in a heartbeat. Makes you wonder why he would have left in the first place if that was true.

It also had a quote from Hard News amongst others .... " We're top of the league, we're top of the league". For all you Kingz bashers its something I think the Nix have yet to acheive.

The Glory days.  I remember that first game at North Harbour.  It was cool, lots of fireworks and they played "In The Air Tonight" by Phil Collins then the players ran out.

Over time I managed to get signed footballs of all but the last season with virtually every players signature and for my 21st received a signed and framed shirt from the 02/03 team.

Probably holds more resonance in New Zealand because of the failure that the Knights were after the failure of the Kingz in the NSL.

Most A-League fans seek to denigrate the NSL, other than a vocal minority.

However I would suggest it was the FFA ignoring the past and granting a license that resulted in no change to crowds or buying proper football players. Indeed they should have pushed hard for a Wellington team had they looked at the actual stats of crowd attendances. With the largest crowds in Wellington exceeding the largest crowds in Auckland for domestic football.

The Kingz came into a competition in the late 1990's that had investment into professional football sparked by the success of Perth Glory and the realisation that professional football was achievable.

Unfortunately there were failed attempts in Parramatta, Collingwood, Carlton with whoever wanted a side allowed into the comp. However it did produce and supply a hell of a lot of footballers.

The granting at the last minute of a side in Wellington will be a massive bonus for Australian and New Zealand football into the future. Is an absolutely crucial foothold for the growth of the Hyundai A-League.

I still remember that first game, for some reason Wynton had the pitch extremely narrow and as a result everything was going out for throw ins.  Huge topic of conversation at U19s training the next day!

Actually, first time an NZ professional team ever took the field in this country was when the Kingz played Manawatu AFC in Palmy North. We had a kit arrive 20 minutes before kick off as they still didn't have one. Trent Watson was immense for Manawatu that night. Batrum Suri scored the only goal for the Kingz.

I still have a signed shirt from all the Kingz players if anyone is interested in some memorabilia. I don't have it here, but recall some players that took the field for the Kingz, mainly as a trial. Jeremy Seales, Ivan Vicelich, Marcus Stergiopolis, Dino Minnello, Bartrum Suri, Harry Ngata. I'll have to check the shirt and decipher the signatures for the rest

Tackles with commitment...
Gave meaning to the chant
"You'll go home in a Jackson Ambulance"
Without a doubt, the best effort form Block 5 in the 3 years as a season ticket holder was the continuous siren noise every time Con Boutsianis had the ball after returning with Brisbane following the bank job.

This is totally off the subject. Please try and keep to the topics that the  thread indicates should be discussed.

If you must bring West Ham into this and keep to the subject I suppose you could say;

Ten Years ago today...............
Michael Ferrante was still Braums and List after being part of the West Ham Youth Team that had won the Youth F.A. Cup Final

Or
Ten Years ago today.....
U Iron saw his first game at Upton Park when DiCanio took Arsenal off the top off the table.
