ONE of the men charged with the assault of a man still fighting for his life played in the A-League for two seasons before signing with Manly United FC last year.
David Dodd, 26, of Manly, and his brother Kris, 28, of Queensland, have been charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm, assault occasioning actual bodily harm and affray following an incident outside a Manly hotel early on Sunday morning that left Matthew DArcy fighting for his life in Royal North Shore Hospital.
David and Kris Dodd appeared in court on Sunday and were bailed to appear in Manly Court later this month.
Midfielder David Dodd began his professional career with Gold Coast team Palm Beach Sharks in the Queensland state league.
He then came to the attention of A-League team Perth Glory, where he trialled in 2007, before signing a two-year contract with the Brisbane Roar in 2008.
Dodd was released by the club following an end-of-season shake-up in 2010.
He then moved to Sydney and agreed to terms with Manly United FC, who play in the NSW Premier League.
A key player in Craig Midgleys XI, Dodd is always one of the first players selected when fit.
The team finished sixth this winter in the 12-strong competition and also won the Waratah Cup.
Dodds older brother Karl is also a professional soccer player, turning out for the Brisbane Roar, Wellington Phoenix and the now-defunct North Queensland Fury in recent seasons.
This month he signed with TSW Pegasus, part of the Hong Kong First Division League.
It is believed David Dodd left Manly Uniteds end-of-season function at Cromer Park early on Saturday night to socialise with his brother.
Mr DArcy remains in a critical condition in Royal North Shore Hospital after the assault on The Corso about 1am.
Manly crime manager Inspector Arthurs said CCTV footage from cameras belonging to the hotel and Manly Council revealed a number of potential witnesses to the incident.
He urged anyone who witnessed the incident to call Manly police on 9976 8099.
