12/13 Finishing Position Predictions

Looking at the league, its gonna be very interesting to see how some of the sides go this year. And its about time we start seeing 'experts' making their punts so I'm interested to see what we think the final table is gonna look like.

I generally think its gonna be damn tight with all the player and coach movement - but here's my crack:

1st Central Coast Mariners
Haven't really lost anyone apart from Wilkinson, and I think Montgomery is gonna be a fantastic player. Very settled unit and if Ibini can keep firing I expect them to be up there. No real big changes in the off-season so I expect more of the same.

2nd Brisbane Roar
The change in management will be very interesting, but they have resigned all their key players from last year plus brought in a Halloran and a couple of young asian players. Also younger players like Fitzgerald, Jurman and Brattan all look very solid.

3rd Melbourne Victory
Probably the most interesting team to watch for me, Ange has got a huge task to turn these guys into champions and I cant see it all going smoothly from day 1, but with Flores and Finkler, I think they are gonna have some creative firepower to burn. Getting the defensive unit right might be the issue - but Milligan and Traore both fit into Ange's style.

4th Perth Glory
Another side with not too many drastic changes to the side. They look to have added a lot of depth to the squad, and the addition of Thwaite was a great piece of business. Smeltz will still bang in the goals, and hopefully Miller can continue his good form.

5th Wellington Phoenix
Have added a lot of attacking talent, which is quite untested at this level. Loss of Brown may be bigger than anticipated. Lots of injuries to key players and late additions may mean the team hasn't had quite as full a preseason as we think. Lots of ageing players who will be relied on heavily but the addition of youth and the way they step up may be the difference.

6th Sydney FC
With Del Piero on board, I expect the whole side to lift. I expect a completely different outfit from previous seasons. A lot of changes in the offseason and loss of Carle shouldn't be underestimated. Think how their defense operates is going to be key to their season as they seem to have used their import spots further up the pitch

7th Adelaide United
After a poor season last year, they have seemed to pick up in the champions league and get some good results. Still a few concerns all over the park including an unsettled Sergio Van Dijk who really needs to fire in order for the team to get the goals. Otherwise, Djite is going to have to really step it up for these guys to push into the top 6

8th Newcastle Jets
Seem to have added a lot of youth but not added enough proven A-League quality players. Heskey will be an interesting fit into Van Egmond's game. I can see them doing well but also falling over a few times throughout the season.

9th West Sydney Wanderers
The new team to the league is gonna be really competitive for the wooden spoon this year. They havent really picked up enough quality to be anywhere near the top. Although Mooy and Ono could be dangerous. Also depends on how well their new imports go.

10th Melbourne Heart
For me, Heart are gonna pick up the spoon this year. A new unproven coach has been given a pretty horrible task in my eyes. They havent really picked up any one of note apart from Richard Garcia who has always been hit and miss. But they lost a lot of their young stars like Good, Hamill, Babalj, Zahra, Goodwin etc.

I actually have no clue who is gonna win this one or even do well? That top 6 for me is pretty much a stab in the dark based on nothing

This season is very hard to pick. My stab in the dark for funsies:

1/ Tards
2/ Rrrrivals
3/ Rawr
4/ Nix
5/ Bling
6/ CCM
7/ WSW
8/ Radelaide
9/ Jest
10/ Heart

Haven't had the time to think about this properly, so will post something fuller later.

But a couple of thoughts: I think WSW will do better than a lot of people think, and think Sydney will suffer on the pitch through the del Piero signing in a similar way that Victory suffered by having to play Kewell all the time last season.

I cant see why we cant get at least 3 or 4th this year!

Two things:

1. Tyler Boyd might be young and promising but Fenton has impressed far more in pre-season. Don't know how he missed that.
2. "Coach factor: Ricki Herbert is the best coach New Zealand has ever produced - period. An undefeated World Cup with the All Whites in 2010, and three straight finals appearances with the Phoenix. Practically unsackable" - Clearly wrong, sack Ricki!

Fuck this stupid game

Practically unsackable is spot on, but whether that's actually a good thing is an entirely different matter.

I don't think del Piero is going to tear up the way Sydney are hoping but I think he is much more likely to be a positive influence than Kewell was. I just get the impression that Kewell thought everything was beneath him... including his teammates and the coaching staff. Tards are much better off with him gone imo. I think del Piero is more of a team player and wont have that effect.

I was more thinking along the lines of how hamstrung Victory were last season, in that they had to play Kewell no matter what - they were moving him around the pitch, getting other players in and out just so that Kewell could keep a spot in the starting line-up, and this cost them big time in the final analysis.

The similar pressure will be on Sydney to always play del Piero - and for a guy who's almost 38, who hasn't been able to play regular 90 minute football for a couple of years now, for whom conditions in Australia will be quite challenging, while playing in a league that excels in the physical rather than the technical, this will be a big ask. And could have just as negative side-effect on the team as the Kewell situation.

I still don't think we have what it takes to finish in the top 2, probably not even top 3. Away form was better last season but still not fantastic, and the typical injury/suspensions of key players hold us back. But in saying that we need to be aiming for that top 3 position as nothing short of 4th will suffice.

With Ono on board I would place WSW in the top 4.

A creative midfield genius, he will have much more impact on WSW than ADP will have on SFC.

1 Victory

2 Phoenix

3 WSW

4 Adelaide

5 Heart

6 Newcastle

7 Sydney FC

8 Perth

9 Roar

10 CCM

WSW may have a good import in ono, but their defenders are nothing flash, beauchamp is i'd say the best of the lot. but the rest wont cause any striker to lose sleep. the mid field looks light on exp and the attack force has bridge in it.... 4th spot is to high for them. 5,6 or 7 id say. they have a GCU youth feel about them for me, so in sort burst they will be dangerous, but over an entire season they wont be able to keep it up.

I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.

1. Victree - Big season for Marco with a coach who knows how to get the most out of his type.
2. Roar - Still a strong squad, good coach, effective style, lots to prove.
3. Nix, can't imagine getting less points than last season. Expect to win more away from home with Manny and Smith in the mids, they     seemed to play well away last season.
4. CCM
5. Sydney
6. Perth
7. WSW
8. Jest
9. MH
10. Adelaide, don't know why exactly but I feel pretty sure about the reds finishing near the bottom.

Some decent points here.  There are a lot of ifs and buts about us this year as others have said - I'm not particularly confident.  I've always said that we lose away from home because we don't keep the ball well enough.  I'm not sure that will improve without Sanchez but let's see.

Personally I can't go past Melbourne for the title.  It's the Ange factor

Ricki unsackable - of course he is.  However, that's clearly not based solely on performances.

As to him being our best ever coach - it's hardly a long list to compare against!  He's the only NZer ever to coach a professional team (unless you count ASB Prem).

The other question - what would we consider to be a successful season?  I would say has to be top 4.  5, 6 or below isn't good enough for me.

We will win the league this year.

And I don't give a flying f**k where the rest of them finish.

1. Brisbane

Risky prediction this one; they haven't lost any of their squad, just the best coach in the league.

2. Victory

Flores, Postecoglou, Rojas.

3. Perth

Will bring the biff again.

4. Phoenix

Brockie will rip it up.

5. Sydney

More to them than just Del Piero.

6. WSW

Aaron Mooy is a gun.

7. CCM

Lost too many good players

8. Adelaide

Complacency.

9. Jets

Heskey? Esky!

10. Heart

Not enough experience, new coach.

Predictions:

  1. Nix. Because.
  2. Sydney. Del Piero will start slow and it won't look that good for Sydney mid-season, but they will finish strong.
  3. Adelaide. Risky prediction but they've had good experience in the ACL.
  4. MV. Rojas to have a good year.
  5. Perth. Go Smeltzy!
  6. Jets.
  7. Roar. They've just lost confidence, lost a coach and rely too much on Broich. Good chance he'll get injured and then they are screwed.
  8. Mariners. We all saw how they dropped off at the end of last season.
  9. WSW. Shouldn't expect any more of them.
  10. Heart. Lost so many people, inexperienced coach, fickle fans who'll just switch over and watch Mudgee Masturbators vs Warrabinol Wankers in the AFL.

2. Jets. Gorgeous football from Heskey. Gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous.

I just tweeted the same... silly bugger - even over there he's a laughing stock. Oh well, if the boys ever need a wee nudge in the motivation department, thanks Robbie.

  1. Brisbane - same squad as last season, and Rado will do the job well
  2. Adelaide - probably my riskiest call, they placed very good football in the ACL and made me very nervous
  3. Phoenix - Possibly a little bit high up, but we should be solid in defence. The key will be scoring goals, Stein and Brockie need to be on form
  4. CCM - Lost a few key players, but always seem to punch above their weight.
  5. Perth - Heffernan will get sent off multiple times, and Burns will still be a cock.
  6. Victory - Will be better than last season, but Ange needs more time to build a dynasty like he did at Brisbane. Still a lot of players in the squad that need to be cleared out.
  7. Sydney FC - I think they will rely a little bit too much on ADP, and this will be their undoing.
  8. National Road and Motorist's Association Insurance Western Sydney Wanderers Football Club - Their defence looks shaky at best, but they seem to have a few different attacking options.
  9. Jets - Heskey won't score a goal all season, and we will whip them at the Ring of Fire again, twice.
  10. Heart - Lost several great youth players, and a very inexperienced coaching panel.
