Home crowd average for the Phoenix:

11 683

That is one extremely good first season average, especially considering you guys were in the bottom few teams for most of the season.

It will probably be only the 7th highest average this season, beating Perth. However, compared to the first season averages of the other teams, it places 4th, being beaten by only the major cities Sydney, Melbourne and (edit: Queensland not Adelaide as I posted). A-League version one overall averaged 10955, so your average is well over that.

Congratulations, and all the best for the rest of the season and future years.

I'd expect the Mariners to get an average of at least 12k cause of their derby against the Jets coming up which should be close to a sell-out, and their last round game which will probably determine whether they are a chance for the minor premiership should come pretty close as well.

Great crowd in tonight - almost 15k. Good effort considering a lot of people would be away on holiday.

Adelaide and Central Coast had huge crowds after that week though. Adelaide almost doubled their highest crowd at Hindmarsh when they played at Adelaide Oval.

But based on our population and lack of away support due to distance, our crowds are top notch.

ginger_eejit, for current stats look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A-League_2007-08, which is usually up to date.

Another interesting statistic- your top crowd is higher than Queensland and Newcastle's (and Perth's of course) highest crowds!!! Sure, it was influenced by Beckham and everything, but that just goes to show your brilliant management. Sydney's crowds around the Beckham game didn't increase.

And comparing the combined 2 season crowd totals of the Knights (72242) with your first season total (116833) shows that you certainly aren't another Auckland team.

It's been a good ride for us fans, despite the hiccups with the season tickets and the odd bit of daft behaviour. We've had it quite lucky. Only one rainyish day. The rest have been a most pleasant experience. I was stoked at the near 15k crowd. Considering a lot of regulars were still away on holidays, we still did ourselves proud.

You can tell the players etc appreciate it. Even encouraging us when we go a bit quiet - ie, Daniel & Felipe  waving to the crowd. I've loved this season and on that point, I know I am definately not alone.

I couldn't believe over 14K turned up on Friday. Wgtn has been a ghost town, so I was expecting more like 500 people to be there. Let's hope for 20K next season each week. There'll be a whole lot more season passes purchased for sure.

I'm picking us to get into the finals and have 20,000 strong crowds when in the top 4.

14000+ ..................

and the reason why ???

Because they were letting kids in for free, which is what they should be doing for matches against lower or less attractive teams (even if it is most of the teams) or at least make them pay $2 entry.

My thoughts exactly.

The aim for next season should be to get a regular season crowd of over 20,000 in a game, and get the average attendance between 13-15,000.

11 683 is a fantastic effort.

I seem to recall in the start-up days that they were hoping for an average gate over 10k, and quite frankly I thought they were dreaming - 6 or 7 maybe, but 10+ never.  Doesn't seem that crazy now, which just shows what a huge shift there has been in the way football is now perceived here.

And here's a wee fact worthy of note.  Average Wellington Phoenix gate was 11 683, while the average Wellington Lions gate was ... 10 546.  Quite interesting that.

Well done to lots of people!

I know, I know, its serious!

I just hope that we can keep it up for next season and that people don't forget about us during the off-season - what with oval ball games starting up and such.

The membership base seems pretty strong which is very comforting and hopefully next season the nix will chip its way up the table and possibly challenge a play-off position, this will only enhance the popularity of the nix and will obliterate the lions crowd!

Not that I don't enjoy Rugby, Rugby has all sorts of good things like Zzzzzzzzzzz

My 2007 -
Biggest crowd - 31,000 plus the Ring of Fire.
Lowest crowd - Four (and a dog - seriously) Stop Out v Wellington United. (weather was cruel.)

what a difference a Phoenix makes...
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

You're a legend, DF. Bet the dog was yours too, and you had a Stop Out scarf around its neck.

Ah, happy freezing frigid days at the Raceway....

Showing my age but I remember watching Wynton Rufer playing against Stop Out at the Hutt Park Raceway all those years ago. He was about 17 at the time.

Mind you I still remember watching Stop Out play North Shore in the National League down Whites Line East too!

There was one cracker in 1974, or 75, between Stop Out and North Shore. Stop Out were two down and came back to 2-2 before missing two pens in the last ten minutes.

I was at that game. You think back to the crowds at those games and what we get with the Nix. how times have changed - for the better! Better stadium, better programmes, better play just crappier food available. Are they trying kill fans off at Westpac??
