Well, the final countdown has started to my final day as (primarily) a Sydney FC fan, as of the afternoon of Sunday 22nd July - when the Phoenix take to the park to play Sydney - I'll carefully fold up my Cove scarf and Sydney FC away jersey and don my Retro Ricki Yellow Fever t-shirt in allegiance of my new local team the Phoenix.

There was quite a dilemma I was placed in when the announcement was made that Wellington would be hosting the new A-League, but I've decided to stick to the principles of supporting your local team, and will make the switch of allegiance in the pre-season cup game.

The reason I supported Sydney even though I was living in Wellington at the time the A-League kicked off was because of the 3 years I had lived in Sydney before moving to NZ in mid-2003, when the league kicked off I was still traveling fairly often back and forth between Wellington and Sydney and felt a lot more connection to Sydney in the A-League than the Kingz/Kinights.

But 2 years down the line, and 2 years more I've been in NZ, and unfortunately I don't get to travel back as often as I used to and feel that the right thing to do is get behind the local team - and there is a fair bit of excitement in Wellington looking forward to getting the team up and running and I hope and I'm sure the city will get right behind them.

I bought my membership last week for the YF zone and I'm fair looking forward to the season getting under way, especially with an opener against the Tards - as being a Sydney fan for the last 2 seasons has given me an extra sense of dislike for them.

Did you ever sing "I'm Sydney till I die"? or did you always sing, under your breath, "I'm Sydney till I move"?

It's not a position I'd ever thought I would find myself in, who was to have known two years ago that the Phoenix would exist, but being brought up (and still) a Hibs fan - nothing sticks in the craw than watching buses leave from Edinburgh to go through to Ibrox and Parkhead full of Edinburgh folk supporting the old firm, when there's two perfectly good teams to support in Edinburgh, so I've always had a strong sense of feeling that people should support their local team, and when the A-League kciked off Sydney were my local team due to my connections there and travelling regularly back and forth.
It's something I've been weighing up now for 3 months and to me it feels that Phoenix would be better off with my support rather than Sydney (considering it's from afar and maybe 1 or 2 games a season attended) - I know that Sydney fans who go week in and wek out will probably say they're better of without someone who can change team  like that - but circumstances prevail - anyway it's not like I'm changing teams for any gloryhunting reasons!!

Hopefully you will be defending this accusation from the Cove at the end of the season.

Welcome.

When the Australian zRugby league first started getting coverage here I followed the Raiders. However the first time the Warriors meet the Riaders I knew that support had to end. These are unusaul circumstances, and your decision which sure was difficult is perfectly understandable. I'll guess you'll only know for sure next weekend.

You're in the same position, aren't you? You support Melbourne?

I live in Melbourne but haven't lived here long enough to justify supporting the Victory. Was born and raised in Wellington and lived there for 17 years so it's a pretty easy decision for me.

I tend to take the other side of the fence ie, I was born in waikato and spent quite a few years there so despite the fact that I have lived in Wellington for nearly ten years i still consider mys elf a Waikato man, and support everything mooloo.

My argument is, if I moved to Australia, would people expect me to support the wallabies (where I live) or the AB's (where I'm from).

My blood is black, not canary yellow

I'll support Melbourne Victory till either they die or I die, whatever happen first. I was born and raised in Welly, lived there for 23 years and so I'm jubilant that they've been given the NZ A-League franchise, but I've lived in Melbourne for the past 10 years, been a supporter of Victory since the idea was first concieved, and couldn't imagine myself supporting anyone else.

And as for supporting the Wallabies? I'd rather eat my own face.

Haha. You are in the exact same position as my Dad, then :D Though he lived in Welly for a bit longer. It's going to be interesting this season, as my Dad will be supporting the Victory and I the Phoenix :]

You know who you support when you srart saying "we". After 12 years in UK/Europe I had Arsenal down the road and Barnet up the hill. Even though I despised the bobbly red had brigade, 10 years on, Arsenal and "we" came together quite naturally.

I would say something mean, but then I would probaly be a hypocrite since I spend more time in this forum then I have in any Sydney FC forum.
