Shame as I like the size of the ground and considering our crowds, the Basin would be a great home for us.
Proud to have attended the first 175 Consecutive "Home" Wellington Phoenix "A League" Games !!

The Basin isn't an option, full stop.

Do they not have a drop in pitch? Last i heard from the Phoenix the Basin was definitely an option they were looking into to. The 'stadium' in Tauranga was also looking good. Wouldnt mind attending either to be honest...

When the groundsman of the basin come on here and says it won't happen, then it won't happen.

Can i just reinterate my point that if the last came on the stadium in on the 9th of October, and the season doesn't (at this stage) start until October, I doubt there is a need to take a home game to another part of NZ.

This is the third thread on here in about two years where I've said the same thing. It's just not possible.

AJ - I think some members of the BRT got all excited about the idea awhile ago [don't get me wrong, I love the idea myself] but they went and fed the media without thinking about logistics.
 
In the wet season the Basin is barely fit for walking on, let alone football. It would actually be a dog of a pitch. From mid September onwards we start cricket preparation - once the weather allows us to. From that point it is a cricket ground only, there is no chance of playing football or any other code over the cricket block. There is no drop in pitch and I doubt there will be in my life time. I dearly hope they never consider a drop in pitch at the Basin Reserve.
 
That's only the logistics regarding the pitch. Someone else can address the rest.

Seems thats sorted. Thats too bad then, it is an amazing ground. Seems the former home of wellington football will never be again.

Semi-related-but-not-really question: do they still play rugby on it during winter?

Yeah I'd love it to be a football ground again, but a lot of money has to be spent for that to happen. Due to the season clashes, sadly it won't be a Nix venue.
 
A. Yeah it's Old Boys Uni's home ground and they play 7-8 games depending on whether it's fit enough. We decide whether it is and usually have to cancell a few games a season. "The Basin" is an apt name for this place in winter.
 
There is talk of the Wellington Lions using it as a training ground this winter to make way for RWC teams at their home, Rugby League Park. Little do they know it won't stand up to a lot of traffic. They also won't like the cricket block.

True, those games they normally play at Porirua wont be an option as that is out as an RWC training venue. Unless they schedule all the games after the quater finals when it may be open again.

They have a few against A-League clubs as well dont they? I went to all the Porirua games last year  and they were only against Central League/Cap Prem sides. I think they played Wests at the turf as the Acadamy was rained out one night

You can take the games against A League clubs to Australia easy enough. Where they play the games against Central League/Cap Prem sides was more what I was getting at.

RWC training ground (unless you are talking about #2), would need to have lights to play the games at night. Te Whaea or Wakefield may possibly be the only option.

No way.  This will draw the walk-up crowd away from Junior Football Grade 11 games.

Benefits,
One off game, will be a big crowd, bigger if in Varsity Time.
Enclosed and roofed stadium, noise will be huge.
Rectangular, so close you can touch the players.
Great walk frorm the Octagon to the game.
Humming town.
 
Negatives
Flights from Wellington need to be booked early as can be dearer than normal trunk routes.

Dunedin has got to be worth a look with the new stadium.

In 2010, Christchurch had a Phoenix game that clashed with the NZ Masters games in dunedin- I was playing football, so did not get up to chch for that. But . . . I did think that could be a perfect time for a Phoenix match in Dunedin- heaps of out of towners around, all of whom have at least a passing interest in sport. The game could be marketed at these people,(maybe a small discount for Masters games participants)  as well as the general public in Dunedin, who will I reckon be keen for some football in the stadium.

The games are in Dunedin again in 2012, 4 February to 12 February.  that is before the students are back, so an alternative would be to have a game a bit later. Either way, it would  be fantastic.

If you look at the RWC schedule...quite a few pool games are over by mid/late September. Certainly Nelson and Napier will have finished their games before start of October.
 
Not sure if the grounds are unavailable for use until the whole RWC is over but I would doubt it.
Napier would be OK until the ROF became available. Nelson will have temporary seating to bring it up to 20,000  and is lighted.
 
Better still would be if FFA scheduled changed our schedule so we played 3 away games  at the start of the season in October and made up with more home games later on.
 
The annual away to Chch is out too.....AMI will not now be ready until Feb at the earliest

As much as I'd love a game in Nelson, there's a cycle track around the pitch. You are so far away from the action it's ridiculous. The embankment isn't steep enough so you can't even see from there.

Yep...Nelson spent nearly $5 million on upgrading their park and its crap.....a stupid cycling ring was left that nobody uses and a very low bank means that you are probably 40 metres from the goal line. Could have/should have done a better job.
