when i was a young fellow i got a full pint thrown at me at the rimutaka tavern hit my pint and shattered both glasses pretty much in front of my face, the guy then wimped out and left as i approached him. his mates apologised and bought me some drinks to calm me down as i was going to deal to the dickhead, they reckon he thought i was in the mongrel mob and that was the excuse even though i am white and look more like a biker than a mobster.

Yup. Used to make the place from Once were Warriors look like a Devonshire Tea House.

Sorted out to a large degree now .

I love to have a beer with Dunc.
We drink in moderation
And we never ever ever get rollin' drunk
We drink at the Burma Lodge
Where the atmosphere is great
I love to have a beer with Duncan
'Cause Duncan's me mate, yeah

Bistro Bar the place.

NB I went free-riding on a Greek cruise ship between Piraeus- Turkey - Rhodes in late 70's and when I was caught I was promised "at least 3 months" in jail on Rhodes (they thought I'd gone ashore in Turkey which I hadn't, and was therefore deemed an illegal emigrant/immigrant). But the chief steward, soon as he heard I was from Wellington, NZ, came looking for me to ask if I knew the Bistro Bar. When I said I did, and correctly identified the 'types' who hung out there, i.e sailors and transvestites, he had a word with the Rhodes immigration police - and they let me off all charges.

what was the name of the pub opposite the taj mahal where the guy got stabbed? It is on the corner. I went in there once with some mates and the place was packed till this couple started to sing folksy type music,  the bar emptied in less that 5 minutes, i kid you not.

The Bistro Bar was the downstairs bar at the Royal Oak Hotel in town. Our club used to be sponsored by Leopard Breweries [who owner the hotel] and we used to stay there on away trips to Wellington. It was a real eye opener for me a young 16 year old in there with my team mates late on a Friday night before playing on the Saturday.
